Not seeing her if she were taking a break and resting is one thing, but when she works behind closed doors, it feels like deprivation.
Daily Appointments Schedule for August 18, 2010
Washington, DC
August 18, 2010
SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON
Secretary Clinton holds internal meetings at the Department of State.

She really wants to make it clear that she’s not on a vacation and is still 100% on the job, doesn’t she.
I wonder if Bill will be at that meeting with Qureshi in New York. They said some NGOs would be participating and something tells me she’ll be in work tomorrow.

Why, then, would she not be listed as a participant in this event?

Certainly, if Bill is participating and it’s his birthday, it would give them a chance to be together legitimately at an event relevant to both of them.

I’ve gone all wonk-ish about this and I have a few thought.
First, she always distances herself from anything personal having to do with her husband. She knows the country will never stop analyzing their marriage, so she gives up as little as possible to be analyzed. Anybody with a computer and a curiosity could look up birthdays and anniversaries and such and see if they spend them together. I just don’t think she’d give people (or TMZ) the satisfaction of speculating about what they were up to. Last year, with all the fluff about where they stayed and comments sections full of speculation about what they did with each other, I think, taught her a lesson. I highly doubt that there will be another Clinton getaway before she leaves her position as SOS. There was also the comment in the Congo that set those ancient, undying rumors about divorce flying again. Her well-timed day in Bermuda seemed to put those back in their place for now.
The sociopolitical climate was also different. A year ago taking a few days in Bermuda was just that. Now, with all the vacations taken by the President leaving a sour taste in the mouths of many of the general public, the Clintons, the Bidens, or anyone else in the administration taking a few days anywhere would be criticized as the “decadent, wealthy, liberal, elite being out of touch with the folks.” I find that argument rather bogus. How can anyone, Democrat or Republican, have a 24-hour security detail, never em>ever drive, or shop, or cook, or clean for themself, have more money than any god you can name, still claim to really be in touch with the lives of ordinary people during a recession. I’d be surprised if the politicians can see my pain, let alone feel it. If they could feel the recession pain, too, I’d be willing to bet we’d be having far more recuperative “Recovery Summer”. That said, however bogus I find the whole ‘vacation = snobbish, arrogant, elitist drunk on power’ argument to be, it plays well with the population right now. Every time someone from the administration is seen on a beach, or out with their family, or grabbing a coffee and a sandwich at lunch, the cry goes out that “this administration isn’t working.” Considering her workaholic nature, every time Secretary Clinton hears that, it must make her angry. So she keeps making sure we all know she is at her desk. And, while I don’t see her ever getting back into politics, if – just if – she did, she could point to this summer and to the fact that the only break she took was for her daughter’s wedding – a event that she, in theory, would not have scheduled. Every day that her schedule was hers to control, she was at her post, even missing her husband’s birthday and her 35th wedding anniversary (I predict she will miss that, too) because she’s a loyal and dedicated public servant. I can hear the ad and the speeches now.

You state an excellent case here and are probably right. I will agree with most of it for one reason: Unlike the inexperienced, whatever their last names might be (wink), the Clintons are hyper-aware of image and its effects. Hillary has managed to carve out a schedule as SOS that permits her to get away to Chappaqua on weekends when she is not traveling, so she is not “in the mix” 24/7 except when absolutely necessary. This may provide enough severance from her daily routine for the time being.
I will disagree on just a few minor points and one big one:
1. She will not miss her hubby’s birthday.
2. She will not miss their 35th.
Like many of her most avid supporters she is a little OCD about her work. But it is not necessary to be THAT obsessive – it would play into that old, tired “cold b*tch/ice queen* meme. She is not that, as proven by the wedding weekend and more. Of course she can take the time to celebrate. She is the “human Hillary.” now. Softer, and warm. She does not need to ruin that image.
3. I think she will run. I have never doubted a reactivation of her suspended campaign. Not for a minute.
Forget SOD and VP. Here’s the real story finally arising today:

Well, she doesn’t actually have to not see Bill on his birthday or their anniversary, it just has to seem like she didn’t or at least didn’t make a huge deal out of it. She’ll most likely go back to Chappaqua tomorrow evening and they’ll spend a quiet evening together. Then she’ll be back at work on Friday, hopefully at the UN. Their anniversary celebrating will be under the radar as well. She may be the “Human Hillary”, but she still has a politician’s brain. If I can work this stuff out, she already figured it out six months ago.

I just read that she will be discussing aid to Pakistan at the UN General Assembly and then meeting with Qureshi in the afternoon. Different event, same city and she will be working tomorrow.
Manhattan’s not that big a place, maybe they’ll see each other after all. They can, you know, have coffee or something between meetings.

Yes, Rachel found something about that. Odd, though, that she is not a featured speaker at tomorrow’s event according to the State Department press release.

Bill must kidnap her or what if he wants to spend some time with her alone. 😉 Good luck, Mr. President with this mission!
