Hello from Washington. All of us share a firm belief in the power of young people to reshape our world. On nearly every overseas trip that I take, I make it a point to meet with university students and other young leaders. Earlier this month I visited the Balkans, and I could feel the students’ enthusiasm for making a better future for themselves, their communities, and their countries. In many places, youth under the age of 25 make up a large part, even a majority, of the population. So if we’re going to tackle our toughest problems, from terrorism to climate change, we will have to tap your talents and passions. At the State Department, we recently launched a new Task Force on Youth to better coordinate the government’s efforts to reach out to young people around the world.

Gatherings like this are an excellent opportunity to share ideas and forge new partnerships. Because when young people have the chance to get involved, they gain a sense of purpose. They bring creativity and contribute new energy. And they become engaged citizens for whom service can be a lifelong practice.

So I thank each of you for your efforts. I look forward to working together as we create opportunities for young people and help build a brighter future for them and for us all.

  As you hearken back to her Wellesley days, I would like to share with all my fighting Homegirls (and Homeboys) here a precious document. Back in 2008 I fought hard against accusations that both she and Obama are products of the Alinsky model. I finally obtained a copy of her thesis – clearly a rough draft (which makes it ll the more precious to me since it looks like all of MY rough drafts from those days). This helped me combat accusations that she ever bought into Alinsky’s model. She analyzed it, masterfully, but she stopped short of endorsing it AND of accepting his job offer.
  
  Here is what especially blew me away about young Ms. Rodham’s work.
  1. Her analysis, in chapter III, of a controversy stirred up by her immediate predecessor in the Senate, Daniel Patrick Moynihan in the run-up the The War on Poverty in the 1960s.
  2. This passage in Chapter V:
  “Cries for ‘decentralization'” are attacking the roots of the managerial garrison state, They are not easily ignored nor easily interpreted. Is it ‘decentralization in Ocean Hill-Brownsville but ‘unconstitutionalism’ in Little Rock? Decentralization and democracy are not synonymous as those as those who use the words interchangeably would have us believe. There are still too many inequalities in our system for political scientists or demonstrating students to adopt the ‘doing one’s own thing’ theory of participation.”
  
  The thesis, and I encourage you to download and read it in its entirety, http://www.scribd.com/doc/24567737/There-is-only-the-fight-An-Analyisis-of-the-Alinsky-Model-by-Hillary-D-Rodham-May-2-1969 is brilliant work by a very young and gifted woman. When I read Chapter III, I was so aware that she could never have dreamed then of acceding to Moynihan’s post. As to the passage above, she became First Lady to Little Rock and Senator to Ocean Hill-Brownsville, and I sincerely doubt that either of those locations ever before had a person in those positions who was so thoroughly grounded in the history she knew. I also know that she, at that time could not have imagined that she would occupy those roles.
  
  What the thesis shows, in the broad surface analysis, is the reason this young person was chosen to be the first student speaker at commencement in Wellesley’s history. In a more specific and deeper way, it demonstrates the kind of incisive and bold philosophical and political mind being honed even then. I don’t think we have HAD a president who can offer a work such as this wriiten at such a tender age that foreshadows the woman she has grown into. It is because of this that I see in her, not because of sloganeering or bandwagoning to “make history” that I support, follow, and archive her work.
  
  Happy Birthday, Mme. Secretary! I STILL want you to be our President. You are already , and have long been MY LEADER!
