The Secretary of State is so glamorous that it is hard for me to think of her as a geek, but she does have a geeky side, as we all know due to all of her social media outreaches, internet initiatives, and her interest in “connection technologies.” We see her here speaking in Addis Ababa on Sunday during a blackout. So invested are readers here in Hillary Clinton’s love of technology that one remarked that she appeared to be reading from an iPad rather than her usual notes.
That said, it is not at all unusual that her State Department would issue the following press release of special interest to those who travel frequently for business purposes as well as to students traveling for adventure this summer. If you have the gadgets, she has the apps! We have this app for students that stores digital portfolio. check it out at Class Dojo.

Department of State Releases New iPhone App for Travelers
Media Note
Office of the SpokesmanWashington, DCJune 14, 2011
The Department of State today released its new “Smart Traveler” app for U.S. travelers going abroad. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad (requires iOS 4.0 or later). Smart Traveler provides easy access to frequently updated official country information, travel alerts, travel warnings, maps, U.S. embassy locations, and more. Travelers can also set up customized e-tineraries to keep track of arrival and departure dates and make notes about upcoming trips. Additionally, the app provides a link for travelers to enroll in the Department’s free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) so the State Department can better assist them in an emergency.
Information for the app comes from content that is also posted to www.state.gov and http://travel.state.gov. Please visit those websites for even more information on international travel, foreign policy, and the work of the U.S. Department of State.
I love when Madame Secretary shares her inner geek with the world. It’s the only think I can really “get” about her. Rock those glasses and play some Angry Birds on that iPad, Madame Secretary!

I don’t know how she could possibly have time for Angry Birds when I don’t , and aside from my job, all I do is follow her.

Cool! I’ll have to download that app on my phone.
On another note, someone was interested in seeing tweets about Hillary going to New York, but they weren’t showing up yesterday. They’re back. Apparently no one was even talking to Hillary. I would have at least wanted a hug or fist bump if I ran into her on the plane.

I wouldn’t have said anything to her. She’s off the clock at that point and is just another commuter trying to get home. She doesn’t need to be pestered all the time just because she’s been a part of the national dialogue for twenty years or so. I’m glad no one bothered her. How much can she possibly enjoy having strangers come up to her a talk to her all the time?
The exceptions to my statement are, of couse, anyone who comes up to her holding a baby and cute children. She always likes cuddling babies an how could she not want to hug a four year old fan.

I think I would have said Hi.

I agree. I would at least say hi if the words came out but I’d probably be too nervous. I really wnat to meet her one time though. If somehow she ends up being on the ticket in 2012, I’ll definitley go to a rally. I’ll be in virginia for most of the GE and that was a battleground state last time so there could be a lot of stops there or NC which borders it.

I would have said hi. Off the clock notwithstanding. It’s human communication, not her job that would motivate. It’s called “phatic language.” A lot of young people don’t engage in it anymore – they’re too busy looking at their screens instead of the world around them. It’s simple recognition of another human being, and I would have said hello to her and to anyone else who met my gaze.

Well, I wouldn’t have gone out of my way to be rude, but I wouldn’t be any more apt to try to strike up a conversation with her than I would be with anyone else. Then again, I always have a book, magazine, or ereader with me and ‘flight’ is just another word for ‘reading time’.
I agree that my generation engages in friendly conversation less. For better or worse, we’re less approachable.

I don’t know, I generally am not looking at a screen while boarding anything. I am generally face to face with people, so of course I greet, as I would have greeted her.

Well, I’m also not very outgoing, so that probably makes me a bad example. Even so, I was raised not to be rude, and by and large I try not to be. I have yet to get a bill for common courtesy, after all. 🙂 If she smiled or waved, I’d do the same.

Wow! Is it that cultural? It’s rude to say hello? In many cultures it’s rude not to!

No, no, no, let me explain. I wouldn’t take not bothering her to the point that I would be rude and ignore her. If the situation required a greeting I’d offer one, but I wouldn’t rush up to her and ask for an autograph or anything.

OH! Ok. I see. I wouldn’t ask for an autograph, either. I think they are for people under 14.

Someone as supportive and loyal as yourself deserves a hug and a photo, anyway. I’m sure she’d oblige. She seems like a hugger.

A hug would be nice. And a picture. I would not be able to resist showing her the pics I have of Bill on my phone, either. She was in Pakistan when I took them..

Or a high five. She has perfected that! 😀

Thank you for that article. Corollary to this, it is infuriating that this took place yesterday in the HR while everybody was focused on Anthony Weiner.

Hillary must be spitting bullets about this in the wake of her stupendous work on the 1000 Days Initiative!
