Secretary Clinton Helps Secure Seven Additional African Nations to Join the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves
Media Note
Office of the SpokespersonWashington, DCJune 16, 2011
On the heels of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s visit to Africa, seven African nations have joined the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves. The governments of Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Rwanda and Tanzania, together with the Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, committed to join the public-private partnership to help save lives around the world.
These new Alliance partners have set goals to collectively reach nearly 20 million African homes with clean stoves and fuels by 2020, and ultimately help achieve the Alliance’s 100 by 20 goal, which calls for 100 million homes to adopt clean and efficient stoves and fuels by 2020.
The new African members join the nearly 100 partners which include national governments, UN agencies, private companies and non-governmental organizations already mobilized to overcome market barriers and achieve global-scale production, deployment, and use of clean cookstoves in the developing world.
Encouraging the development and use of clean cooking solutions in cultures, communities, and countries throughout the developing world is consistent with the core principles of U.S. foreign policy and development efforts, which focus on improving the lives of the world’s most vulnerable populations. The U.S. government has committed more than $50 million to the Alliance over five years. With the help of more than six federal agencies, the U.S. government is mobilizing financial resources, providing top-level U.S. experts, and leveraging research and development tools to help the Alliance achieve its 100 by 20 target.
On September 21, 2010, Secretary Clinton announced the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, a public-private partnership led by the UN Foundation, to save lives, improve livelihoods, empower women, and combat climate change by creating a thriving global market for clean and efficient household cooking solutions. In May 2011, academy-award winning actress Julia Roberts became Global Ambassador of the Alliance.

It’s things like this that prove her efficacy as a powerful voice on the world stage.

Yes, truly! Would be nice to see her be able to be effective domestically, too.

Well, if Bill’s NGO work is taking more of a domestic turn (CGI America, etc…) we may see some of that should she work with the Clinton Foundation after her tenure at State.

I think she should run for President … sooner rather than later. How long does this country have to wait? We are in a double-dip? It’s a depression. Obama’s inexperience has not evolved into experience.
I would like readers to offer her quotes of what she promised in Puerto Rico, because this week Obama said that HE promised he would return as POTUS. And he DID! Cool! Now what exactly has he DONE for Puerto Rico? And what did Hillary say she would do? I bet she didn’t promise to return as POTUS.

This is the text of the speech I pulled this (long) quote from. http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/06/hillary_clinton_te_quiero_puer.html I’ll let her words speak for themselves. By the way, she does mention a second term, but she doesn’t really harp on it.

And she didn’t promise to return as POTUS. I could hear this speech today, and it would still make sense. We have a president who has failed to lead. I could do with some perky blonde leadership with an awesome brain. I could do with a champion.

I chose that segment because it does sound like something she could be saying today. My favorite part was,
That would be lovely, wouldn’t it.

It would salvage a lot of families here in this country.

It all still sounds so current. Even the part about being ready on day one sounds valid.

I don’t even have words for what those videos do to me. There were times in the campaign when she just reached in, grabbed my heart, and wrung it out like a dishrag. This was one of those times. To me, this is essential Hillary.

I the beginning of the second clip, when she talks about “having help” with her look sometimes and some people always catching her when she didn’t have help, she almost sound hurt. It must have been a tough few days for her to emotional enough to let it show.

There were so MANY times when I knew she was hurt, and she kept fighting because, as she said, it was the right thing to do. When she said that I wanted to run and help her.
As for how it turned out, well, if this article is correct, the administration is actually preventing job creation and suing companies that created jobs. Why don’t we just hand to country over to the Republicans now and forego the pain of a long, drawn out contest because, well, to quote my girl again, “The Republicans will raise this.”

I know there are no sure things in politics, but it seems like an alternative is really needed. Obama’s economic policy has been largely unaffective and the Republican party is making a mad dash to their right. That kind of reactionary politics isn’t going to sit well with more moderate voters and also isn’t good for the country. There has to be some sensible person who will do the right thing and enter the race.

I think you’re right. There especially appears to be a need for a happy medium and balance between regulation and taxation – especially corporate (Bachman wants NO corporate taxes) and for the very wealthy – a class that requires redefinition. $200,000 – $250,000 is upper middle class in some regions, but maybe we can agree with A million? Two Million? As a cut-off?

There is also the far right positions being taken by Republicans on social issues. So far the Jobs, Jobs, Jobs Congress has put a major focus on curtailling access to abortion. They also want to spend taxpayer money defending the DOMA in court.
Batshit Bachmann also wants to do away with the Dept. of Ed. and EPA among other things. I’d love to see a Hillary/Bachmann debate.
LikeLike
The only way that debate happens is if they are running against each other and I would NOT want to see Bachman running for #1 or Hillary running for #2.

Top of the ticket only for our Hillary!!! NO VEEP!!!
With the way the GOP race is shaping, up it looks like a Romney-Bachmann ticket is likely. But if Hillary throws her headband into the 2012 ring, she’ll pick a veep who can crush Bachmann in a debate, I’m sure of that.

Since we’re remembering her words in 08, here’s a full campaign speech from Iowa. She is introduced by her squire (and given a big hug) at around minute 18.

The speech isn’t. Her speech is solid, she looks lovely, and her squire is exceptionally attentive.
The fact that she could give a similar speech today, now that’s painful.
