The Secretary of State grabs headlines even as she catches a few rays and waves. We begin today’s review with her latest position on the Forbes list. This is from ABC News.
The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women by Forbes
By CAROLINE HOWARDAugust 24, 2011This year’s No. 1 in the ranking, German Chancellor Angela Merkel–recognized as the “undisputed” leader of the EU–is key to curing what ails the euro zone. As the Arab spring turns into the autocrats’ summer, No. 2-ranked U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton provides encouragement to dissidents….

Late-breaking and contributed by Rachel Spencer, a regular here, is Greta Van Susteren’s pick for most powerful woman in the world. Now you know who it has to be, right? This was in Forbes.
Greta Van Susteren Names Hillary Clinton “Most Powerful Woman In The World”
Meghan Casserly, Forbes Staff
…when she joined me in our own newsroom at 60 Fifth Avenue this month for a video (on the very day our list was finalized), I decided to ask her: Who do you think is the most powerful woman in the world?
I naively anticipated a long pause as Greta stopped to think about her answer. I sat back in my chair, recrossed my legs—and was cut off by the no-nonsense host. Clearly I don’t watch enough On The Record to know that she’s not shy with her opinions—and she knows her stuff.
“Well, right now I suppose the most powerful woman is Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton,” Van Susteren responded without missing a beat (my legs were still trying to re-cross themselves, it was that fast). “She’s different than most Secretaries of State. I’ve traveled with her a couple of times, and when she lands in a country it might as well be the President of the United States… The whole world knows her.”
The “Run, Hillary, Run” campaign continues with this from the New York Daily News. This has a poll. You can go to the site and vote. (Did I add enough links for ya?) 🙂
Hillary Clinton in 2012: If no Republican can beat Barack Obama, let’s settle for a Democrat who can
Wednesday, August 24th 2011, 4:00 AM
Nearly a year ago in this very column space, I wondered if we wouldn’t have been better off with Hillary Clinton than Barack Obama, and suggested – half-jokingly – that she could beat him in 2012 if she wanted to.
Well, with Obama presiding over staggering unemployment, unfathomable debt, another potential recession and the first credit downgrade in U.S. history, I’m convinced now that the answer to that question is yes.
Incidentally, I’m also finding less and less humor in the idea that Hillary should run.
And, we have this from The Atlantic. It is about Romney, and I post it, really only for what is quoted below: the reference to “Hillary Clinton’s last presidential election.“ What? What does that mean? What is the implication of the word “last” there? Is there another presidential campaign in the offing? Or is that just wishful thinking?
Mitt Romney Is 2012’s Hillary Clinton
…NBC News’ First Read says Romney’s strategy for protecting his frontrunnerhood has had mixed results–and it looks a bit like Hillary Clinton’s last presidential election. That didn’t work out so well for her.
I was just gonna post that forbes link. Angie and Hill 🙂

A fair number of those banging the drum for a Clinton run are Republicans. That makes me take all of this with a grain of salt. Don’t they have about a dozen of their own candidates (and one Sarah Palin) to amuse themselves with this election cycle?
I love that Angela Merkel is the world’s most powerful woman. I think she’s a really good leader with sound policies. She also seems to have a healthy sense of humor which always helps in dealing with others.

Every time a Repub mentions the possibility of Hillary 2012, it gives her a boost. Even if the Repub can’t stand her and isn’t afraid to tell us why, it still gets her name out there and makes people think “Can she? Will she? If she does, should I vote for her?”

True, but I doubt that increases the likelihood of a candidacy. I think it will be interesting to see what happens with the “Run, Hillary, run,” meme once DC gets back to business.

We don’t consider it a meme. It’s a campaign. We actually work on it and have meetings.

Ok, the “Run, Hillary, run, ” campaign. I’m curious to see what happens when there’s news coming out of DC again (the doesn’t involve natural disasters). It will either be smothered or fueled.

The proliferation of articles began toward the end of July before everyone left. It was heavy enough that I had to reflect deeply about whether to post about them here. I finally decided to on August 2, before everyone left. Granted reps and senators are getting their ears full over these weeks, But we won’t stop our campaign.

They – the legislative and executive branch – were also engaged in an extremely unpopular display of all that most Americans find unproductive and completely obnoxious about our political process. If they come back and, miraculously, are capable of a mature and substantive debate and maybe pass a few this to help get people working, your campaign will have a harder time competing for airtime.
I don’t there’s any way your girl could come out with a jobs program that would be breaking that “no domestic policy” rule.

You’re a swell gal, but why be such a downer? Think positive. Even if Hillary doesn’t end up running its worth it to try, isn’t it? I’m not mad at you or anything, so don’t take it like that, but try to remember- conventional wisdom is almost always wrong, especially when it comes to the Clintons. 🙂

Hillary will do what’s best for her and only she can say what that is. I don’t mean to throw cold water on the idea. I just don’t have a say in the matter. It’s up to the lady in question. An executive decision , you might say.
What I am interested in is this stream of articles and comments in various media outlets pining for Hillary. As I see it, when DC gets back to doing what they do, these daydream-like op-eds could just fade, drowned out by the political news of the day. The very well may happen, but what if they don’t. That will be a fasinating bit of political theater and I’m stocked up on popcorn. Barack Obama will then have to deal with a primary challenger who isn’t actually running and, as of now, is being put out there by Republicans. Imagine, Republicans pushing for Hillary Clinton to be President – it must be snowing in hell. The President will then have to figure out how you campaign in a primary which is a figment of the American imagination. If he tries to go on the offensive, he’s tilting at windmills and will look very petty, but if he tries to ignore this ghost primary, it continues to damage him which, in turn, continues to fuel the calls for a challenge. It could get very interesting, especially if more Democrats start writing “Run,Hillary, run,” pieces.

Well yeah… part of me would hate to see her put herself through another run, but as much as I like Hillary, I like America more. I am currently not enthused by my choices for President thus far and I’m sure you aren’t either
And personally, I sometimes think Obama runs primary campaigns against his imaginary friends. An ghost primary against Hillary by the white house would be interesting indeed!

Slim chance to none as SOS. I have to say that if there is a way to do it as SOS she would find it. But, like Libya, he would get the credit.

Is it possible Obama was naive enough to think Bill would be brief? Has he seen that man’s autobiography? Did he not catch Jon Stewart’s interview with him that went on for an age (very interesting though it was)? The man can talk!

LOL!!!! Not to mention press reactions to Clintons in the WH press room. I remember the first time HRC walked in there as SOS and the press corps started tweeting. “Hillary Clinton in the WH press room!” They’ll keep either of them there as long as they are willing to talk.

It’s nice to see that Hillary is widely respected, but it’s also infuriating to know that she should have been president and she’s not.

Hillary is very respected through out the world. I am just as angry knowing the dirty tricks back in 2008. She should have been our President not him. That said, I will along with all of you here be right there for her everyday. Run Hillary Run.
