Press Statement
Victoria Nuland
Department Spokesperson, Office of the SpokespersonWashington, DCSeptember 28, 2011
Clinton will travel to the Dominican Republic October 5 for the fourth Pathways to Prosperity in the Americas ministerial. The government of the Dominican Republic will host the event, involving high-level government officials, policy makers, business leaders, academics, and representatives from international organizations from the Americas who will share best practices that promote inclusive economic growth and prosperity in the hemisphere.
During her visit to the Dominican Republic, Secretary Clinton will be accompanied by Under Secretary for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman, Assistant Secretary of State for Economic, Energy and Business Affairs Jose W. Fernandez and Acting Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Roberta Jacobson as they meet with Pathways country ministers, Dominican President Leonel Fernández, and other Dominican government officials and private sector representatives attending the ministerial. Secretary Clinton will speak to participants in the Pathways Access Initiative and the Pathways Women Entrepreneurs’ Network and participate in a high-level panel with representatives of the Organization of American States, the Inter-American Development Bank and the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Pathways to Prosperity country partners are Western Hemisphere countries committed to democracy and open markets. Current participating countries include Belize, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Uruguay, and the United States. The Inter-American Development Bank, the Organization of American States, and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean are also partners in this initiative to promote inclusive growth, prosperity, and social justice.
Under Secretary Sherman, Assistant Secretary Fernandez and Acting Assistant Secretary Jacobson will continue their stay in Santo Domingo to attend the Americas Competitiveness Forum (ACF). ACF provides a platform for dialogue on how to strengthen competitiveness and to learn about investment opportunities in the Americas. ACF 2011 will highlight five key drivers of competitiveness: innovation in services, education, renewable energy, business climate, and trade facilitation. Assistant Secretary Fernandez will co-moderate (as part of the ACF) the fourth meeting of the U.S.-Central America Renewable Energy Forum, along with President of the National Energy Commission of the Dominican Republic Enrique Ramírez.
I wonder if Bill will accompany her to Arkansas. It could be a nice walk down memory lane for them.

Bill is such a troublemaker. Celebrating his bid for the White House while Obama continues to struggle. He likes for people to know when he’s giving advice, too. Which one of these guys wanted to be noticed… and looks to be mugging for the camera.
And then there’s his new book on how to fix the economy which is slated for release in November. *Sigh* Someone should remind him about term limits. No matter how well he runs for president, he’s always going to lose now. Still, it will be interesting to see how Obama runs against Bill, or rather, Bill’s book.

the fact that obama invited bill to play golf in the first place tells you he sees bill as an asset right now, especially since the GOP is attacking obama’s millionaire tax they way the criticized bill’s tax on rich folks in 1993.

i’m sure it’s also quite obvious to obama that bill’s wife is far and away the most able member of his administration. 🙂

More able, by far, than he himself is! 🙂

This celebration has been planned for a very long time. It isn’t something that was nailed together yesterday because Obama is struggling. Should he cancel it because Obama has spent two-and-a-half+ years unable to establish any leadership credentials?

No, I would never begrudge Bill Clinton a party. Events are all just coming together in a very interesting way. CGI always gets press. And then there’s this event which, I’m sure, will get some attention. Then his economic plan is released in book form and the ensuing book tour will no doubt be fill with photo ops with adoring Clinton fans. Since there is no challenger to the president, this is as much of a primary as Democrats can expect and it will get attention because there isn’t much going on with Democrats these days.

LOL!!! I think Joe Biden was hinting at a challenger today.

Wow! What?! What’d he say?

He said the election is a referendum on the economy and, “It’s soon going to be a choice,” I don’t think we will know SOON who the Republican contender will be, so what was he implying?

You think Joe has someone in mind?

I think there is a lot of frantic stuff going on behind the scenes. Christie may be caving to the pleas and demands. Joe is perhaps foreshadowing his own retirement there … for the better candidate. I think Jill is not happy. I think she misses teaching.

I thought Jill Biden did still teach. I thought I read that somewhere. Anyway, I don’t want to see Joe out of the VP slot.

You didn’t get what I meant. Joe may be implying that he is not averse to retiring. Implying a whole other Dem ticket. Are you really that enured to Obama-Biden? After all the Obama caving? Biden works hard, but his “boss” has no muscle! It even hurts to call Obama Biden’s “boss.” He is no leader! I cannot vote for him.

Obama is a disappointment at best. The caving needs to stop. I didn’t vote for a Republican knock off. I thought you were talking about the dump-Biden-for-Hillary thing which I think is ridiculous. If Biden wants to retire, that’s something else, but if it has to be Obama or one of the Republicans, I’d like it to be Obama-Biden. If the whole ticket changes, then the VP picking is the duty of the Democratic nominee and I doubt anyone will be calling me for advice.

Nuh-nuh- noooooo! Was NOT talking about the purported “swap” at all! (See? The Obama Administration even has ME stammering like all of them except Hillary do!) I was talking about a whole different ticket. One WITHOUT Barack Obama on it. He has not earned reelection – in my book. Not renomination, either, since he engineered his first nomination. I say “chuck him!”

Ok. Then the nominee, I assume you’re thinking Hillary Clinton, may or may not want Biden. If it’s your girl, they’d be an adorable ticket.

That has nothing to do with how I took it. I think Biden was implying that given the record of this ticket he expects them to be challenged. He is smarter and a lot more experienced than Obama and is not infected with Obama’s egotism. So he is a lot more realistic about their chances of running unchallenged than ANY of Obama’s people. Plus he is actually friends with Dems in Congress – since he has never actually left the Senate – he is still working with the same people he has known for decades – Obama never made many friends in the Senate – he’s so aloof. Biden knows who is talking what. I think he has heard scuttlebutt about a challenge. I don’t know who – but probably NOT my girl.

Biden is dispatched to the Senate whenever the White House need to talk to them. He’s sent to deal with House Democrats, too, but not all that often because, since they have next to no power, the are of little value to the President. (I really am bothered by that since all of my state’s representatives are Democrats. In ignoring one party at least one state’s voice in the House of Representatives is not listened to.) I wouldn’t be surprised if Biden has heard some grumblings of discontent among those in Congress. He’s also been at this long enough to know that a re-election is never a sure thing. Discontent breeds thoughts of those who could possibly do the job better and ambition in those who would like the chance to try. You are also right about him not believing the Obama hype. In Bob Woodward’s book he talks about how Joe Biden was one of the few White House people the would speak plainly and sometimes rather bluntly with the President.

He is not dispatched to the Senate. He is President of the Senate – that is his regular job. He never lost even a week of being in touch with his old colleagues there because all that happened was that he changed positions. I am sure he has heard some candid opinions.
LikeLike
Yes, he’s there, but he also goes and conducts negotiations on behalf of the White House, like he did during the debt ceiling thing. He not only deals with the Senate every day, but he’s the one who deals with the Congress as Obama’s proxy when things need aren’t going smoothly. I’m sure he’s heard a ton of off hand, one might say honest, opinions between these mediations and his day to day dealings in the Senate and I’d be willing to bet it isn’t just from a handful of people who are nervous about their re-election bids.

Yes – that fits Obama’s MO of outsourcing everything. What I want to know is what HE actually does besides making speeches.

I like Joe well enough but he’s known as a bit of a loose cannon sometimes. Also I think if HIllary decides to run, she would most definitely want her own team, not Obama carryover.

Hillary Clinton has her “people”. She’s worked with them for decades and that who I think she’d pick from. New people need not apply. It’s a very insular group. That something I’ve never liked about her, but I think all politicians do it to some extent.

I would agree that they all chose from their old and trusted friends. Who wouldn’t? I know I would. If I was in the position where I knew I had to depend on someone to have my back at all times, I would chose the person who has always helped me over the newbie I know nothing about. I can’t dislike that in others when I do that myself. At work, I often work with the same crew because I know they will steer me right, will help me pick of the slack, and would warn me if danger approaches. That’s not a bad thing. That’s self preservation.

You can only rely on old friends so much before you start to compromise your team especially if that has been a closed club for about fifteen years like HillaryLand has. My chief of staff would defenatly be a long time friend and advisor. I’d probably also want close friends and advisors to be my Press Secretary and my legal council. The Vice Presidency is another thing entirely. The first question shouldn’t even be one of loyalty. It should be whether or not the person in question could run the country if I couldn’t. The most able person for the job may not be in my circle of close and trusted friends. Obviously, loyalty should play some roll in the choosing of a VP – if the best candidate is also the one most likely to undercut you, you go with the runner up – but there are more important things to consider.

Hillary values loyalty because she’s loyal herself. But while that’s often an attribute it definitely hurt her in the 2008 campaign.
