Recent Incidents of Violence Against Women in Afghanistan

Remarks

Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
December 12, 2012

The United States joins the government of Afghanistan in strongly condemning the murder of Najia Sediqi, who was killed in a drive-by shooting Monday morning. As Acting Director of Provincial Women’s Affairs, Najia was one of the many Afghan women who dedicate themselves every single day toward building a brighter future for the people of Afghanistan. The United States will continue to stand side-by-side with women who are carrying on Najia’s fight, the Afghan government and all Afghan people to ensure that the hard-won gains made by women in the recent years are protected and advanced. Senseless violence like this will only threaten the potential for peace. Our thoughts are with Najia’s family during this difficult time.

Video Remarks for Startup Youth Launch

Remarks

Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
December 12, 2012

I am delighted to send greetings to each of you as you come together to find new ways to help entrepreneurs and young people bring their ideas to life.

Around the world, I have met with countless passionate young people who are looking to make a difference in their communities and countries. But too often, they are denied the opportunity to realize their potential. 75 million young people around the world can’t even find a job — this is a crisis that we must address for the sake of our future peace and prosperity.

That’s why the State Department’s Office of Global Youth Issues is launching Startup Youth. Through this initiative we will connect budding entrepreneurs with business leaders who will share their advice and help these young innovators realize their ideas. To kick things off, we will co-host an event with Microsoft that will include a speaker series and workshops. I want to thank Microsoft for joining us in this effort.

All of us – whether we work in government or civil society or the private sector – need to empower the next generation. Success for all of us will depend on whether young people are able to realize their full potential to drive innovation, economic growth, and positive change. To all the young entrepreneurs out there: know that the State Department is a partner and friend as you work to build a brighter future.

Video Remarks for Caribbean Event on Rule of Law and Ending Gender-Based Violence

Remarks

Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
December 12, 2012

I’m sorry I can’t be with you, but I am delighted to send best wishes as you discuss new solutions to gender-based violence in the Caribbean. You understand the far-reaching costs of gender-based violence.  You see the consequences firsthand every day of rape, incest and domestic violence – the consequences for the women, as well as the families that are shattered, children denied the chance to live their dreams, and communities that are ripped apart.

Gender-based violence is not cultural, it is criminal.  And it must be treated as a crime, with the entire legal system working together to prevent and prosecute these crimes.  It starts with having the right laws in place.  And these laws need to be implemented to hold people accountable and address impunity, which often fuels the violence.

I am grateful to all of you for shining a light on these important issues – and more importantly, coming up with concrete new ways to end this terrible scourge.  All of us need to  work together.  Thank you on behalf of the United States and women throughout the region who – because of your work – can hold out hope for a life free of fear and violence.

Video Remarks for South Asia Women’s Entrepreneurship Event

Remarks

Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
December 10, 2012

The video below is available with closed captioning on YouTube

I’m sorry I couldn’t be there in person, but I am delighted to send best wishes to all of you as you come together to find ways to elevate the status of women.  I also want to thank the Government of Bangladesh for hosting.Closing the gender gap is a powerful prescription for economic growth.  The evidence is clear and the debate should be over.  But all over the world, women still face enormous obstacles to starting new businesses or expanding existing ones.  Many of you have faced these barriers firsthand.

That is why the United States has been working tirelessly to develop concrete solutions to these obstacles through our policies, programs, and diplomatic engagement.  And we are not alone.  Businesses, governments, and major financial and multinational institutions are stepping up to the plate with more inclusive policies to advance women’s entrepreneurship and economic development.

I often say that no country can prosper if half its population is left behind – so the work you all are doing will have a real return on investment.  By sharing best practices and brainstorming new initiatives, you are unlocking the potential of women across South Asia – and creating a brighter future for all citizens of the region.
Thank you for your efforts.  I look forward to hearing about the ideas you come up with.
