‘The Spectacular Now’ Director James Ponsoldt to Helm Hillary Clinton Biopic

The ‘Smashed’ helmer is attached to direct ‘Rodham’, the film about Hillary Clinton’s early years from Kim Young Il’s screenplay.

Smashed” and “The Spectacular Now” director James Ponsoldt is confirmed to serve behind the lens for “Rodham“, a tale of the early years of former First Lady of the United States Hillary Clinton. The indie film is based on Kim Young Il’s script, which was ranked fourth on 2012 Black List.

Talk about a hot button project.

With a presidential run in 2016 as likely as the sky still being blue tomorrow morning, Hillary Rodham Clinton will be one of the most important figures in American politics for the next handful of years, and now, she’s about to be fodder for a biopic.

The Wrap is reporting that James Ponsoldt, best known for the films Smashed and the breathtaking The Spectacular Now, is set to direct Rodham, based on a Black List script from writer Young Il Kim. The film will follow the story of Clinton during her time in school, and also happens to deal with her romance with one Bill Clinton.  Here’s the synopsis:

During the height of the Watergate scandal, rising star Hillary Rodham is the youngest lawyer chosen for the House Judiciary Committee to Impeach Nixon, but she soon finds herself forced to choose between a destined path to the White House and her unresolved feelings for Bill Clinton, her former boyfriend who now teaches law in Arkansas.

Hillary Clinton Movie Reportedly Nabs James Ponsoldt As Director

Posted: 04/29/20

Hillary Clinton movie finds new director.

James Ponsoldt has a knack for getting the best out of Hollywood’s most talented young actresses, and he could turn the trick again with “Rodham.” According to TheWrap, Ponsoldt — who directed “Smashed” and the upcoming “The Spectacular Now” — has signed on to make a new biopic about Hillary Clinton.

First announced in January, “Rodham” focuses on Clinton’s early career as a young attorney on the House Judiciary Committee during the Watergate scandal. (The House Judiciary Committee was responsible for impeaching President Richard Nixon.) Young Il Kim wrote the script for “Rodham,” and described the film to Politico as a “journey.”

“[She was] torn between her personal desires and her professional ambition — both literally pulled her thousands of miles apart, because Bill did not want to leave Arkansas, and she did not want to leave Washington, D.C.,” Kim said about that time in Hillary’s life.

Hillary Clinton biopic aimed at potential presidential campaign

Release of much-anticipated Young Il Kim-scripted film Rodham to tie in with 2016 US presidential primaries

Ben Child guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 30 April 2013

Rightwing US politicians who last year campaigned against the release of the drama Zero Dark Thirty for fear it could influence the outcome of the 2012 presidential election may have a new target in their sights. Deadline reports that a biopic about the early life of Hillary Clinton – entitled Rodham – is being primed to tie in with its subject’s mooted presidential run in 2016.

Screenwriter Young Il Kim’s drama, which was included on the 2012 Black List of the best unproduced screenplays, centres on the future first lady and US secretary of state as she vacillates between her legal career and the attentions of a charming young suitor from Arkansas in the 1970s. Its synopsis reads: “During the height of the Watergate scandal, rising star Hillary Rodham is the youngest lawyer chosen for the house judiciary committee to impeach Nixon, but she soon finds herself forced to choose between a destined path to the White House and her unresolved feelings for Bill Clinton, her former boyfriend who now teaches law in Arkansas.”

Ready for Hillary organized a rally tonight at a venue where Bill Clinton was speaking. The information was posted here this morning in case readers in the D.C. area wanted to attend. The  link went to the actual invitation, which apparently went to about 570 people, because it contained the particulars,  rather than to the Ready for Hillary Facebook page which had a post up about the rally.

That post used a graphic with an adorable picture of Bill Clinton with the expression on his face that we see so often when he is watching Hillary speak.  Lovely picture.  But the text in the meme is disconcerting.

I spent today wondering if my skin is still too thin from the sexism of 2008.  Perhaps it is.  The sexism in this meme simply leaped out at me. Is it just me?  The text objectifies Hillary in the worst way.  ” ‘First Gentleman’  I’M IN.”  Wow!  The subtext there!  The implication!

Noam Chomsky, back when he was a linguist rather than a political activist, propelled a language theory (Transformational-Generative Theory) that involved what he called “surface” and”deep” structures.  This particular surface structure has one deep structure that was probably the one intended in all innocence.  But there is a second deep structure that puts Hillary flat on her back rather than behind the desk in the Oval Office, and, while probably unintended,  should have been caught by someone at Ready for Hillary before this graphic was posted  no matter how cute and clever it appears on the surface.

Women, many, have been supporting the Ready for Hillary PAC and its efforts, and this blog has been reporting those efforts.  Women also remember, and can quote chapter and verse of,  the sexist remarks that were aimed at Hillary in 2008.

If Hillary does decide to enter the arena, there will be plenty of sexist as well as political mud slung.  Her supporters need to be vigilant and avoid generating messages that detract from her appreciable personal qualifications no matter how the unintended the message  might appear on the surface.

Here is the scoop from Lynn Sweet in the Chicago Sun-Times:  Hillary will be honored by CURE at a Chicago event on June 13.

Hillary Clinton hits Chicago June 13 to be honored at CURE dinner

>WASHINGTON — Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton hits Chicago on June 13 to be honored by CURE, the epilepsy research foundation — this while a new poll and the start Wednesday of a new chapter in her life are sparking even more speculation about a 2016 White House bid.

CURE — Citizens for Research in Epilepsy — was founded by President Barack Obama’s former top strategist David Axelrod, and his wife, Susan, 15 years ago; their daughter, Lauren, has epilepsy.
Clinton, then the first lady, was the draw at the group’s very first fund-raising dinner and the boost from her star power was “instrumental in getting us started,” Axelrod told me.

The June event will be at the Navy Pier Grand Ballroom and Clinton (a Chicago native: born in Edgewater Hospital, raised in Park Ridge) will deliver remarks for the CURE fund-raiser at a time when guessing about a future presidential run is the top political sport.

Jokes are flying about Clintons’ ‘Hillbilly’ airport

The LIttle Rock, Ark., airport is being renamed after Hillary and Bill Clinton, and locals are excited.

The new Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport in Little Rock, Ark., will hold a dedication ceremony May 3 featuring the former President and his wife and ex- Secretary of State — but there’s just one problem for the snazzy new airport.

“Locals are calling it the Hillbilly Airport,” one insider tells Confidenti@l. “And project managers certainly don’t want an airport named after our President called Hillbilly. In the South. How does that look to the world?”

When Hillary spoke in Dallas on Wednesday evening, our own Maddie was there to greet her!  Maddie attended the Ready for Hillary rally at the Four Seasons Resort and provided us with this account.  Thanks Maddie!

We only got a glimpse of her car at the “Ready for Hillary” rally in Dallas yesterday. There were at least 45 people there (we counted), and a few more joined later. Lots of press. CNN, FOX, local stations and one from Austin. They interviewed people and took footage and stayed the entire time we were there. The people who attended were from all over the area and all eagerly took the Hillary 2016 bumper stickers that were being passed out, as well as an informational flyer on the first organizational meeting to be held June 1st at a Mexican restaurant closeby..

There were all sorts of people there, people from the PAC, people who had worked on her campaign, volunteers and party chairs. People brought home made signs and wore buttons. Also, lots of “Ready for Hillary” and Hillary will “Turn Texas Blue” signs. Everyone seemed happy and eager to work hard, if Hillary decides to run. Lots of cheering and honks from people driving by.

I took pictures, but am going to have to get one of my friends to help me post them here, as I am clueless.

The only negative, was that the local newspapers played it down in today’s paper and decreased the number to “possibly 30″..but that was to be expected. After all, we were in Bush country and his museum was opening the next day, as noted by still4hill.

All in all, I’d say the mood was “determined”….when/if we get the word!!

Maddie sent this as a test picture,  and I love it because it has all of us Still 4 Hillers in it!

Maddie put this in the comments thread, but I think it should be here, above the fold.

I hope she saw us, but we just saw her “motorcade” of three or four cars who whisked underground right across the street from where we were standing in the pictures. Yes, we were all waving and cheering, so hopefully she saw us or at least found out we were there later. It was in both the Arlington/Ft. Worth and Dallas papers the next day, so my guess is she knew we were there :-)

Everyone here is so welcome! I’m not the best at taking pictures on my phone and am even worse at posting them, but you hopefully got the drift. It was exciting and great to be surrounded by Hillary supporters…kind of like here :-)

I’ll let you know how the June 1st meeting goes. The woman who coordinated the “Arkansas Travelers” for both Bill and Hillary Clinton will be the guest speaker.

Hillary Clinton, former FLOTUS, former senator, and former secretary of state accompanied by her husband, the former president, attended the  dedication this morning of the George W. Bush Presidential Center.  She appeared to enjoy the event thoroughly.  The relaxation shows.  She was glowing as she stood with the current and other former FLOTUSes.  She is once again wearing kitten heels.

It was a huge event, historic, and fun.  Quintessentially American.  The elder Bushes drew attention – he with his pink socks and she with her always surprising remarks.  When Matt Lauer asked her before the ceremony about Jeb Bush running in 2016, she said there are more qualified people than four families and the country has had enough Bushes.  Bill Clinton referred her as “my mother” so it is possible her message was not only for Jeb but also for her adopted daughter-in-law.  From the looks of things Barb and Hillary get along especially well.

Unless you spent last night in a cloister, you know that Hillary Clinton launched her paid speaking career as a private citizen last night at this affair.  It was closed to the press and simultaneously all over the news.

Hillary Clinton One

More than 300 of the apartment industry’s top executives gathered at the Four Seasons at Las Colinas in Dallas today for NMHC’s spring business meetings. The day opened with the Apartment Finance Strategies Conference, which included in-depth discussion of financing and operations issues, trends and forecasts, and closed with an exclusive interview with former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Secretary Clinton is considered a potential front runner for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination.

This appearance is Secretary Clinton’s first paid speaking engagement since leaving office and continues NMHC’s tradition of connecting members with a wide spectrum of world-class thought leaders. Similarly, past speakers have included Secretary Clinton’s husband and former President Bill Clinton, as well as members of the Bush legacy, including former Presidents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, among numerous other influential political and business leaders.

According to The Daily Mail, Hillary Clinton was twice asked the question that, for two years running, has represented the most ridiculous waste of time spent with her.  Granted she is said to have pulled down six figures for this appearance, and you might argue that those paying that much are entitled to use their moment in her presence any way they want, but seriously, if you had two minutes with Hillary Clinton, knowing what the answer is going to be (we all know),  would this be the question you would ask?

Hillary Clinton dodges 2016 talk and says she just wants to relax at first paid speech since leaving office

By Associated Press Reporter

Tom Bozzuto, chairman and CEO of the Bozzuto Group, a real estate services organization based in Greenbelt, Md., conducted an interview of Clinton during the hour-long session, and said he covered topics such as international affairs, the economy and the role of rental housing in the U.S.

When he asked about 2016, Bozzuto said Clinton told the audience that she was ‘too freshly released from her role as secretary of state to have time to even think about this.’

Bozzuto said Clinton said she had been asked about the subject by someone in the hallway minutes before the speech. ‘She said she was looking forward to having time to relax,’ he said.

Resoundingly missing from the cover of the Interim Progress Report  on the Benghazi, Libya consulate attack published yesterday by the House Republican Conference is the name Harold Rogers (R-KY), chairman of the House Appropriations committee that twice slashed the State Department’s diplomatic security budget.   That committee was apparently excused from reporting to the conference in the zealous crusade being waged by Tea Party Republicans,  led by Darryl Issa and Jason Chaffetz, to pin blame on then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.  Issa’s name is listed as a co-author of the report while Media Matters reports that Chaffetz appeared with Megyn Kelly to discuss the report released to great hullabaloo in right-wing circles.

Fox’s Kelly Interviews Rep. Chaffetz And Ignores His Hypocrisy Over Embassy Security

 ANDREW LAWRENCE

During the interview there was no mention of Rep. Chaffetz’s own vote to cut funding to embassy security or reports that have undermined right-wing attacks on Clinton.

SNIP

Kelly provided Chaffetz with numerous opportunities to bash Clinton – asking if Clinton “blatantly lied” over requests being made for more security at the embassy, allowing Chaffetz to make claims that Clinton personally denied more security for the embassy, and speculating that there are documents being hidden from lawmakers that prove Clinton had direct knowledge regarding the lack of security at the embassy.

Oh!  So he is speculating!  Never mind that she accepted full responsibility for failures, provided State Department personnel to testify and documents for examination as requested, submitted the Accountability Review Board report in a timely fashion from home while recovering from a concussion and blood clot,  and went on to testify in person before committees in both the Senate  and the House as requested before she had fully recovered from her serious (and scary) health issues – never mind all of that.  Chaffetz and his Tea Partiers think documents are being hidden.   According to an article yesterday inThe Hill,  the former secretary was not interviewed by the audit committee.
