Statement by President and Secretary Clinton on Today’s Supreme Court Decisions on Marriage Equality
Jun 26, 2013 | President Clinton and Secretary Clinton | New York, NY | Statement
By overturning the Defense of Marriage Act, the Court recognized that discrimination towards any group holds us all back in our efforts to form a more perfect union. We are also encouraged that marriage equality may soon return to California. We applaud the hard work of the advocates who have fought so relentlessly for this day, and congratulate Edie Windsor on her historic victory.
Good news, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.

Fantastic news. Yes, there is a lot more work to be done.
I feel that it takes the SCOTUS to push for equality before equality happens in society… and that it takes a long time for true equality to come through.. but SCOTUS upholding it is a huge deal for society.
It is good for all groups… especially for women.
That said, recent decisions about women have made it difficult for women to say sue for sexual harrassment in the workplace, etc.. and that is bothersome. More activism is needed.

needed… to push equality forward in society.

BTW, I just came across a site where you can respond to specific judges on this. In case anyone wants to chime in there.

And, while I am here, I did not like the day-before-yesterday’s decision by the SCOTUS to rule out Voting Rights Act. This, while unrelated, is very germane in that SCOTUS will rule for equality, but it doesnt seem to support congressional actions meant to promote that equality… meant to remove barriers to equality… VRA was meant to remove barriers to minorities voting.. and it gave latitude to local governments to promote ways to bring more minorities to polls, ways that were meant to consider the challenges of each locale… Overthrowing VRA basically left the society to duke it out. Not good.

I’m glad that DOMA was struck down. This is a good day for all my gay friends. I’m so happy for them. Although, as Jen pointed out, there’s still a lot of work left to be done.
