Chelsea and Hillary Clinton at Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards

In 2008, Hillary Clinton was honored as one of Glamour Magazine’s Women of the Year.  Last night,  at Carnegie Hall,   it was Chelsea’s turn!  Hillary must have been very proud to see her daughter recognized this way.

Congratulations, Chelsea!

The Women’s Champion:
Chelsea Clinton

Chelsea Clinton is a Woman of the Year because… “She believes there are solutions to the world’s most complex problems—and she’s not stopping until we solve them. She’s dedicated and she’s dogged, and the world is going to be a much better place when she’s done with it.”
Matt Damon, actor and cofounder of water.org

HER WORDS TO LIVE BY: “Know that we have more in common across the world than we have differences. Mother’s love is universal. The instinct to try to give your child a better life than you have had—it’s universal. And I think it’s largely driven by mothers.” —Chelsea Clinton, photographed at Columbia University in New York City

Let’s forget the last name for a moment and focus on the résumé: four degrees (Stanford, Columbia, and two from Oxford), respected turns as a consultant and on Wall Street, and a reputation as the hardest-working person in the room. With her latest gig, she is tackling one of the most formidable problems of our time: the global inequality of women and girls. And for much of the past year, she did it wearing maternity pants.

Take all of that into consideration, and Chelsea Clinton’s family history becomes one of the least impressive things about her. Yes, the 34-year-old is the daughter of former president Bill Clinton and former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton. And yes, she is now the mother of Charlotte (“the most beautiful, smartest five-day-old you’ll ever meet,” bragged her grandmother after her birth). But most important, Clinton is a woman who believes the universe has room for improvement. “I’ve always had a sense of optimism that the world really can get better,” she says, and she has dedicated this next stage of her life to making that happen.

  4. Every time Chelsea is in the news, she is accused of nepotism by the usual suspects. Never mind the two master’s degrees or the Ph.D. Forget the sterling accomplishments and resume documented in this article. The only things given to this remarkable young woman by her remarkable parents were great genes and a loving and secure environment in which to blossom and thrive. She did the rest. Bet on it.

    • i remember a few months ago jenny mccarthy said something on the view that chelsea should’ve gotten a job as a teen like other kids. um, her father was president when she was a teenager. how exactly could she have worked a job?? talk about dumb.

      • The fact that she was not being paid does not imply that she was not working in those years. Of course she was! Neither was Hillary being paid to work as FLOTUS – but I do mean work! She did!

Jenny McCarthy is such a highly regarded social critic, of course.

        • I read that Chelsea did work on a ranch during one summer and lets not forget that she did step in for Hillary a few times during Hillary’s senate campaign.

          • i remember her working at the ranch. and she took off a semester from stanford (she already had enough credits to graduate) to help her dad in the WH while her mom was campaigning.

  5. Of course, the other thing her parents and Grandma Rodham gave her was great values. Don’t know how I forgot that!
