Hillary was in Memphis Tennessee today to attend the dedication of The Marlo Thomas Center for Global Education & Collaboration at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We see her with Marlo, her brother, Tony Thomas, Marlo’s husband, Phil Donahue, and parents and kids in a waiting area at the clinic.

The Thomases are a remarkable family. This is kind of a long story, so I’ll cut it down to basics. When my dad was a young man in the 1930’s, he had very little money. So, he would go to WJR, the big radio station in Detroit to watch the live radio shows. One of the performers was a comedian named Amos Jacobs. Jacobs was having doubts about staying in show biz since he was struggling himself and had a young family. A recent convert to Catholicism, he began praying to St. Jude, the patron saint of hopeless causes, that if he became successful and wealthy enough to do so, he would build a hospital for children in gratitude and dedicate it to St. Jude. Shortly after making this pledge, Amos Jacobs became Danny Tbomas, a hugely successful star. He kept his word–and then some. His children have carried on that legacy. Btw, I wonder if Hillary and Tony Thomas discussed The Golden Girls which he produced. Lol! Don’t tell Mitch Mc Connell!

That’s pretty much the story my parents told me except that he was not a convert. His parents were Catholic. He was raised Catholic and went through Catholic schools.

I thought he was Jewish, actually, even though he was Lebanese. You’re probably correct. I thought the younger Still4Hillers might wonder who these folks are and would enjoy hearing the story of the founding of this great pediatric research hospital.

Yes, Lebanese – Maronite Catholic. I loved “That Girl.” One of my favorite episodes was when she thought the NKVD was after her but she called it “The Inky Dinky.” On one episode, Danny Thomas made a guest appearance playing a priest, and Terry, Marlo’s sister, did a walk on as a nun. As she passed Danny Thomas she said, “Good afternoon, Father,” and my whole family collapsed in stitches.

I think the reason I thought he was Jewish is because I seem to remember him doing Yiddish dialect humor. My dad might have heard that very early in his career at the radio station and assumed he was Jewish too.

I don’t think I ever heard him doing that.

In any case, he was very talented with a strong singing voice as well. But most celebrities will leave behind nothing as meaningful as St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

That’s true. He was a great man, and it’s wonderful that his kids have kept it growing and developing.

I’m so pleased to see the pics of Hillary at St. Jude’s. It’s such a worthy cause, and one that I have contributed to since I was young.
