It may be 85 degrees outside, but you know it is post-Labor Day and pre-primary season when the campaigns retool. In a normal general election run-up, that would mean shoring up a platform, stepping up a campaign schedule, monitoring opponents, and refining messages to target demographics. Candidates size each other up. Campaign advisors devise strategies. Messages go out to supporters. Bases prepare for battle.
All of that, of course, is happening within the campaign camps. But when Hillary Clinton is running, something else is also going on parallel to the opposing camps. It is not part and parcel of any opponent’s campaign although all benefit. It is independent (lower case “i”), non-aligned, and multi-partisan so the attacks come from every side. It is rooted in the condition known as CDS (Clinton Derangement Syndrome) so the attacks need not be burdened by rationality or reality. Finally, it sexist. Almost nothing the anti-Hillary shadow campaign does or says would be an issue if Hillary Clinton were not the brilliant female human being that she is.
The tandem stories today have to do with her authenticity and her branding.
Let’s get the branding out of the way pronto. There has been too much emphasis on Hillary Clinton as a brand since way before she announced. Certainly once she did announce elements within her campaign busied themselves with gussying up a brand for her, but those elements must not really have known Hillary. My experience this cycle has been that some people who have come to her campaign were Obama operatives heretofore and do not know Hillary at all. They are concerned with branding her, with getting a handle on who she is, and are thinking of her as a product they are selling. I am seeing these stories about Hillary being more natural, humorous, spontaneous, etc. etc. all of which is code for human.
Everyone who has met Hillary knows that she is very human. She is an incredible human, but she is a real live flesh and blood person, not a holograph. She does not need a brand because the Hillary you meet on the trail is the actual Hillary. She is attentive, concerned, patient, warm, empathetic, funny, and kind. She loves the little gestures and remarks she encounters from supporters and is spontaneously open to all.
That, friends, is the real Hillary who has always been there, has never been in hiding, needs no “retooling” whatsoever, and is not a package needing a brand.
If you saw her yesterday when she choked up talking about why she is running and her mother as her inspiration, you saw the real Hillary.
If you saw her today badly needing a Hall’s mentho-lyptus drop and commenting that Republican histamines are everywhere, you saw the real Hillary.
When you see her tomorrow dancing on the Ellen Show with her little miniature admirer, you will see the real Hillary.
If you think she needs to reinvent herself or has reinvented herself, you have been fooled by the shadow campaign.
When a purported Hillary supporter at Forbes lays out a program for Hillary to make herself “more authentic” I smell a big fat rat. That is no feminist who is ready for a woman president. That is the shadow campaign marketing yet another toxic image of Hillary Clinton while ignoring the flesh and blood woman who misses her mom, is proud of her little granddaughter, and genuinely cares about people.
You want to know who the real Hillary is? It is Hillary that is there! What you see is what you get!
She is not perfect. She is human. She is not cold or distant. She is warm and engaged. And she is not an actress playing a role. She is herself.
Those of us who have long been by her side know this. If you are new to Hillary, by some miracle, watch her. Do not bother reading what the latest shadow campaign spin is. Pay no attention to the media behind the curtain. Just watch her. She taped her appearance with Ellen yesterday. Be sure to watch. She is the real thing!
Here is a little taste.

Yes, I should have used two email addresses, one for personal matters and one for my work at the State Department. Not doing so was a mistake. I’m sorry about it, and I take full responsibility.
It’s important for you to know a few key facts. My use of a personal email account was aboveboard and allowed under the State Department’s rules. Everyone I communicated with in government was aware of it. And nothing I ever sent or received was marked classified at the time.
As this process proceeds, I want to be as transparent as possible. That’s why I’ve provided all of my work emails to the government to be released to the public, and why I’ll be testifying in public in front of the Benghazi Committee later next month.
I know this is a complex story. I could have — and should have — done a better job answering questions earlier. I’m grateful for your support, and I’m not taking anything for granted.
I understand that you may have more questions, and I am going to work to keep answering them. If you want to read more, including my emails themselves, please go here:
Here are the four things you need to know about Hillary Clinton’s email use during her time at the State Department.
Hillary takes responsibility for her decision to use a personal account, and the challenges it has created.
Her use of a private email account was allowed under State Department rules.
Nothing she sent or received was marked classified.
She provided all of her work-related emails to the State Department.
Want to know more?
As the State Department has confirmed, there was no rule that prohibited Hillary from having a private email account like she used during her time at State. It was Hillary’s practice to email government officials on their official .gov accounts so that her messages were preserved within email archives. It was only after she left the State Department that regulations were changed.
Nothing Hillary sent or received on her email account was marked “classified” at the time. Before each release of her emails, the State Department goes through a process that allows other agencies to review the emails. As is the case whenever any records are made public for the first time, sometimes agencies disagree about what should be classified, and material that was unclassified at the time can get upgraded to “classified” by other agencies during this stage.
Transparency is important. That’s why Hillary gave all of her work-related emails (more than 30,000) and her email server to the government. She’s making every effort to cooperate and to answer the important questions raised by the public, and to work with the Benghazi Committee, asking that her hearing be public so that the American people can hear their questions and her answers.
You do not have to explain a single thing much less apologize for anything. No matter how hard I tried or how much I pleaded, some of my colleagues never used their institutional email accounts. Their urgent messages never got to me until late at night when I checked my personal email. To them, using their personal accounts for everything was easier.
I completely understand how you were thinking. I also understand that you felt you did not have time to think this out.
We know you. You always hit the ground running and are always prepared. We know that you will be more than ready on day one.
Thank you for the explanation, even though none was needed.
9-8-15 – FULL INTERVIEW ABC – Hillary Clinton Apologizes for Private Email Chokes Up During ABC News Interview – As we learned in ABC News’ brief preview of David Muir’s sit-down interview with Hillary Clinton, the Democratic frontrunner admitted, for the first time, that using a private email server was a “mistake,” saying, “I’m sorry.” Clinton stressed again that the decision to use a personal email address and server was “allowed” by the State Department, but she still believes it was a “mistake” to do so. “What I had done was allowed,” she said. “It was above board, but in retrospect, certainly, as I look back at it now, even though it was allowed, I should have used two accounts, one for personal, one for work-related emails. That was a mistake. I’m sorry about that. I take responsibility.”
Confronted by a New York Times report that found two of her emails were classified at the time that they were sent or received, Clinton pushed back on that assessment. “The State Department disputes that,” she said. “I understand why different agencies have different views, and I respect that. It does not change the fact that I did not send or receive any information that was marked classified at the time.”
Later in the interview, Muir pressed Clinton to say whether she believes Vice President Joe Biden would make a good president, should he get into the 2016 race. At first, Clinton would only say that she “likes” Biden, but then admitted that he “could be a good president.”
Finally, Muir asked Clinton if, in her “most private of moments,” she ever asks herself, “Why am I doing this again?”
“Yes, of course. because it really is hard,” Clinton replied. She even choked up a bit as she recalled mother’s “terrible childhood.” She said, “I don’t want to just fight for me. I mean, I can have a perfectly fine life not being president. I want to fight for all the people like my mother who need somebody in their corner, and they need a leader who cares about them again.”
Perhaps this is the next step in Clinton’s grand plan to “show more humor and heart” in her campaign.
After three-day weekends, Tuesdays come on like Mondays, and today is no different. Hillary Clinton and her staff worked through the Labor Day weekend, but newsrooms came to life early today with announcements of her scheduled TV appearances.
If you are at work, you might have to access your FiOS or DirecTV account online to schedule a recording of this interview coming up this evening.
In her second national interview in a matter of days, Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton will talk today to ABC World News Tonight anchor David Muir, for an interview that will air on the newscast tonight.
Her much anticipated appearance on The Ellen Show is scheduled for Thursday, and while Stephen Colbert is grabbing headlines and good luck wishes on his late night debut it is Jimmy Fallon who won the Hillary visit. I wonder what song The Roots will play for her.
Same night as the second Republican debate, but the recording will precede that.
Word over the weekend was that Hillary will be stepping up her TV appearances, and these announcements are the first wave. We will keep you posted here as the schedule fills in.
Over seven years of blogging about Hillary Clinton and finding friends among fellow supporters, I have noticed a common thread in the camp. Many Hillary loyalists are not only pet parents but also are involved in rescue and shelter efforts. It is not surprising, then, that this issue came up today.

NEWTON, Iowa – It was not the Iran deal, or her private email server, that a woman at a crowded coffee shop wanted to question Hillary Rodham Clinton about on Sunday.
It was mistreatment of puppies.
“When you become president, this is what I would like you to do,” the woman told the former secretary of state. “I would like to see every single dog and cat mill across the country shut down.”
SNIP
“I share your concern about these mills,” Mrs. Clinton responded. “From everything I know about them, they really are terrible places for any animal, and particularly for dogs and cats.” She added, “We do need to do more.”
As for animal cruelty, Mrs. Clinton said, “I think for some egregious examples, and there are some, they would rise to a felony.”

It is a coincidence that this issue arises on the same day when, posting a blog article earlier, I was shocked to see puppies for sale in the sidebar of my Facebook page. In typical NYT fashion, Kaplan has missed the larger issue. Puppies are among the more mobile populations in these inhumane mills. Healthy puppies have a way out by being sold. It is the breeding adults, mostly females, who spend their lives in squalid cages forced to deliver litter after litter who are the saddest victims.
There is a metaphor here. We all love puppies and kittens. Who doesn’t? We spend online time looking at them when we are stressed out or whatever. The question and the issue is not about the puppies. Women know that. Hillary does.
