It is not that there are no differences. There are. There are differences in priorities and in the details of the plans.  There were no personal insults.  There was no name-calling. There were moments of strong agreement, head-nodding, and laughter.  I am not going to try to review this whole debate here.  I am a Democrat.  I have been since long before I could register to vote.  I was proud of my party watching this debate and proudest of my candidate, Hillary Clinton, who did a superlative job.

My fav lines: “I know how to find common ground, but I know how to stand my ground.” – HRC.  Also, “Enough of the emails!” – Bernie

We can only guess how debate prep is unfolding in the campaign camps.  CNN says walk throughs will commence shortly.  Topically it is a crap shoot although it is a pretty good guess that Webb, Chafee, and O’Malley will be concentrating on introducing themselves to viewers who have never heard of them.  When it comes to seizing the moment, however, the lady in red has already won the day.  She did it yesterday.

Hillary Clinton arrived in Las Vegas, got in a car, and went straight into town to join a labor rally at Donald Trump’s hotel.  It seems one other candidate heard about this demonstration after Hillary had made a an entrance and a speech and sent a car  for people to wave at.  We do not know if that candidate was actually in the car at the moment.

Back in 2008, when I was promoting Hillary Clinton, one of the things I remember saying frequently was that she is scary smart and that what we need is scary smart. That remains true, and what could possibly be scarier to all comers no matter the party, than this amazing move by Hillary Clinton?  Basically, she can just stand there tonight and smile graciously.  As one commentator put it, she can straighten all their ties.  She won the optics with this.

At the request of many, and even though I expect it to be a very boring two hours, I will be covering the Democrat Debate live on twitter!

. Glad you’ll be watching. It’s going to be “huge.”

Can someone please explain to Ashleigh Banfield that the proper reference is to the last post held?  She is not Senator Clinton.  She is Secretary Clinton.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton speaks during a rally Monday, Oct. 12, 2015, in Las Vegas, held by the Culinary Union to support a union drive at the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas.

Monday, Oct. 12, 2015 | 6:15 p.m.

In a surprise move the day before the first Democratic presidential debate, Hillary Clinton joined hundreds of members of the Culinary Union Local 226 and Trump International Hotel employees to protest the business’ nonunion policy.

She told the crowd that they have the right to organize and the right to a living wage.

“That means saying no to Donald Trump,” she said referring to the presidential candidate who owns the hotel.

I am not going to link to this article except to show the header which once again demonstrates my point about NYT headers.  If I link to the article I will start running down my free articles for the month,  and I have no intention of paying them while they run headers like this.

New York Times

Hillary Clinton Criticizes Donald Trump Outside His Hotel in Las Vegas

Actually, NYT, what Hillary did was stand with Trump’s employees who have rights as workers to voice their grievances.  Once again, your header misleads.  Hillary was not there to cast aspersions on The Donald.  She was there to stand with his employees whose voices he drowns out and to whom he turns a deaf ear.

In the run-up to tomorrow night’s debate, Hillary tweeted about her merits this evening in a cryptic kind of way.  Similarly, a supporter we all know spoke to progressives about Hillary’s liberal creds without mentioning names other than Hillary’s.  Time to clutch.  We are about to go into third gear, but that does not imply a free-for-all.  Hillary is the leader and will establish the game plan.   We can be certain that will focus on policy and plans and not personally on opponents.

Without Saying His Name, Top Clinton Ally Makes The Case Against Sanders

Ahead of the first Democratic debate, David Brock casts Clinton as the party’s “real progressive” with “real plans that work” in a speech delivered in San Francisco.

His arguments remind me a lot of my own in 2008.  I have always thought of these statements more as points in her favor rather than criticisms of anyone else.  That said, I think I can safely predict that the fact that I admit to having used these arguments in 2008 is going to generate angry responses from some quarters.  Such is the burden borne by Hillary supporters who did not suddenly wake up to her in 2015 and have known her foci, goals, and objectives for decades.  Got my flak jacket on.

Hillary is fighting for all the Dorothys.  My mom was a Dorothy.  The Sisters of St. Joseph swooped in and helped her out.  They gave her a full work scholarship, room, and board and made sure she went to high school during the Great Depression. She would never have been able to get that high school education without the helping hand from those nuns. She was valedictorian of her class. That’s where she met my dad. Otherwise I wouldn’t have come to be!

My mom is bottom row center.  My dad is on Father’s right.  The dude that looks exactly like him on the left of Father Pindar is my uncle and my dad’s identical twin.  (Yes, the twins gave the nuns a world of trouble. It was their job.)  Some of the other girls in this photo were also “Dorothys” that the nuns helped through high school as they helped my mom.

There must be so many stories from those hard years. When you go back 100 years – this country was like some third world countries where you wanted to have a big family so that some kids would survive into adulthood and take care of you in old age. That was the retirement plan.  In my mom’s case, after they buried four dead children in Austria-Hungary,  my grandparents came here and had four more.  My grandmother died in childbirth when my mom was only six and she was the only girl.  So she was kind of set up to have a miserable life.  Apparently this was not uncommon because there were 10-15 other girls living at the convent with the same arrangement.

All the things Hillary has always fought for and is fighting for now address the weaknesses and gaps in the system that can fail people like her mom, mine, and I think many many others and not 100 years ago but now.  As she says, you should not have to be the grandchild of a president and secretary of state to have a fighting chance.

Things change. If you watched Showtime‘s excellent documentary Prophet’s Prey last night, you saw that the polygamists moved to Utah because polygamy was not illegal in Mexico.  Then the U.S. annexed Utah and the playing field changed.

Hillary Clinton accepted Barack Obama’s request to serve as Secretary of State, served the president’s agenda at the pleasure of the president, and did so loyally and as a team player.  The administration’s plan was a pivot to Asia, and that is why Hillary Clinton hit the ground running with her first official trip.

The final plan for the Trans-Pacific Partnership was six years in the making and did not come to a final form until six days ago – two years and seven months after Hillary Clinton left the State Department.

Trans-Pacific Partnership Is Reached, but Faces Scrutiny in Congress

By JACKIE CALMES OCT. 5, 2015

ATLANTA — The United States, Japan and 10 other Pacific Rim nations on Monday reached final agreement on the largest regional trade accord in history, teeing up what could be the toughest fight President Obama will face in his final year in office: securing approval from Congress.

The conclusion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, after years of negotiations and a series of sleepless nights here, was merely “an important first step,” conceded Michael B. Froman, the United States trade representative, as he and other weary officials announced their accord.

When Hillary Clinton came out with a statement on October 7 that she is not in support of TPP, she neither flipped nor flopped.  She was more than two-and-a-half years removed from TPP negotiations that finally came to a rather noteworthy conclusion (it was breaking news) a few days before.  The trade agreement was a treaty in progress when Hillary was at the State Department and, until only a few days ago, not the fully formed treaty now to be examined, debated, and ratified.

It is not impossible that a great deal has changed in more than two years.  It is also not impossible for people to change positions on issues over time.  As we become informed and communication changes, as we learn, we all can and perhaps should adjust our views, attitudes, and stances.

How did you see Bill Cosby in the 1980s?  How do you perceive him now?
