George Stephanopoulos interviewed Hillary yesterday in California for a piece that aired on This Week this morning.

Transcript here >>>>

DSCN4972DSCN4974

Issue 1: The Fight for 15.  Has supported the Fight for 15 and that movement has endorsed her.  Both she and Sanders support raising minimum wage and Republicans do not. Stood with Cuomo and and supported this. Re: earlier statements regarding $12 federal minimum. No big contrast.  The model is a phased in increase constantly evaluating economic conditions so there are no unintended consequences and would sign $15 if Congress passed it.  That movement stands with her.

Issue 2:  Speech transcripts.  Concerned with the changing set of standards when it comes to her.  Her tax records:  33 years released and eight years on her website.  Has said she would release speech transcripts.  Trumps’s new name for her:  She does not respond to Trump’s personal attacks on her but to his attacks on others. He can say what he wants about her.  She will stay focused on the issues.

DSCN5002 DSCN5005 DSCN5006 DSCN5009 DSCN5010 DSCN5011

Issue 3:  Bernie’s remarks about her victories in the Deep South. Hillary doesn’t know what he was talking about.  The South is part of our country and comes into play in an election.  She values every voter and is not writing off any state or region.  Wants to be president for all of America.

DSCN5012 DSCN5014 DSCN5016

Issue 4:  Is it getting harder to heal the party?  No.  She went all the way to June in 2008 and endorsed Obama, nominated him and worked to unify the party.  Will work hard to secure the nomination and earn the support of those supporting Sanders.

DSCN5019 DSCN5020 DSCN5021

Issue 5:  The right to sue state sponsors of terrorism.  She said she is not conversant on Schumer’s specific bill.

Addendum:

Following this interview, Merrill released the following statement on Twitter, saying Clinton backs the bill:

“Hillary Clinton supports the efforts by Senator Schumer and his colleagues in the Senate to secure the ability of 9/11 families and other victims of terrorist acts to hold accountable those responsible. As president she would work with Congress to this end.”

DSCN5026 DSCN5028 DSCN5029 DSCN5033 DSCN5034 DSCN5036 DSCN5037

Issue 6:  Email issue.  Has not spoken with Obama on the issue. Has not endangered national security.

DSCN5038 DSCN5043

Issue 7: Tuesday. Loves being in New York and working hard for a victory, but also working for Democrats up and down the ticket national, state and local.

Hillary is in Los Angeles today for some fund raising and rallied supporters at a local college.  There was overflow, and Hillary went out to show some love to the folks who could not get in.

Let’s be very clear right up front about the fund raisers.  Hillary is raising funds for down-ticket Dems.  What are the protesters doing to help these candidates?  They support one candidate alone and then demonstrate and call names when Hillary mounts an effort to elect more Democrats.

Hillary Clinton raises $33 million for DNC joint campaign account

By Eric DuVall   |   Updated April 16, 2016

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton discusses her economic proposals at Southwest College before attending two fund-raisers later today in Los Angeels on Saturday. Clinton’s fundraisers include a $2,700-per-person event in Koreatown and a glitzy affair at the Studio City home of George Clooney that will cost attendees more than $33,000 each. WASHINGTON, April 16 (UPI) — Hillary Clinton raised $33 million for her joint campaign account with the Democratic Party in the first quarter of 2016, a campaign finance filing shows.

The amount goes to the Hillary Victory Fund, which is a unique joint account set up partially to support the Democrat’s presidential campaign, but also to support the Democratic National Committee and an array of 32 state Democratic Party funds.

In the walk-up to the New York primary on Tuesday, celebrities loom large.  New York based filmmaker and Knicks fan, Spike Lee, has been prominently visible at Bernie Sanders events here including Thursday night’s debate.  Lee’s wife, however, attorney Tonya Lee, is a Hillary Clinton supporter.

While he never played for the Knicks, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a hometown hero.  A graduate of the now-closed Power Memorial Academy, he brought high school basketball glory to the city as a student and later in the NBA. No matter where he played, he was always our New York hero.  Early today I found him trending on Twitter because of this.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: In this crucial election, I’m endorsing Hillary Clinton

April 15

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is an author, commentator and former professional basketball player.

There is a tradition in U.S. politics of somberly proclaiming that each election is The Most Important in History. The idea, of course, is to scare people into voting for some candidate or another. This is done by describing an apocalyptic future like some sadistic camp counselor telling horror stories at bedtime with a flashlight under his chin. In making this assertion so frequently, we run the risk of sounding like the boy who cried wolf, and therefore not being taken seriously when an election comes around that really is important to American history.

As this one is.

This isn’t because we have a female candidate who may be her party’s nominee. That would be historically significant, as was electing Barack Obama as the first black president. His race and her gender inform who they are, as any person’s cultural background does, but it’s policies that maketh the politician.

And it’s policies that make me endorse Hillary Clinton for president of the United States.

Before I get into the reasons I support Clinton, let me first explain why this election really is so important.

Read more  – you REALLY SHOULD >>>>>

Tonya Lee and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are powerful presences in the New York cultural mentality.

Kareem’s reasoned support of Hillary is important and also a pretty good argument to keep on file because it flies in the face of those who claim to know what the founders were thinking. The Age of Reason indeed was the midwife to the birth of this nation.  Kareem has read de Tocqueville; it’s pretty clear.

As senator, Hillary supported many initiatives that were struggling and small and needed a helping hand.  This is one of those stories.  Here is a special message and video from Hillary for America.

From: Erin Stevens, Hillary for New York

Subject: WATCH: Hillary’s connection to Eagle Academy

Friend —

Here in New York, we know better than anyone how hard Hillary fights for our families — and how she delivers results. After all, we saw that first hand when she was our senator!

I hear a lot of stories from New Yorkers about how Hillary helped our communities when she was our senator. But one of my favorites is about how she helped an exceptional public school called Eagle Academy get off the ground. Take a minute to watch this video from the families, students, and educators at Eagle Academy, then share it with your friends on Facebook or Twitter:

While other politicians might just talk about a problem, Hillary digs in, learns about the problems facing a community, and makes things happen to fix them.

That’s the kind of president she’ll be, and that’s why we’re working so hard to help her win the New York primary on Tuesday.

Let’s make sure everyone knows this powerful story of who Hillary is — watch and share this video today.

Thanks,

Erin

Newsday endorses Hillary Clinton for Democratic nomination

THE BOTTOM LINE

The right blend of knowledge, skill and experience.

Hillary Clinton, who is aiming to shatter the nation’s highest glass ceiling, has the right blend of knowledge, skill and experience to be an outstanding candidate for president.

We have seen her in action for decades — as an active first lady; as an effective eight-year senator who delivered for New York, including billions in federal aid to rebuild New York City after 9/11; and in four years as secretary of state, when she played a critical role in levying crippling sanctions on Iran and in the killing of Osama bin Laden.

That experience on the world stage makes her the best choice to deal with its complicated troubles, especially terrorism, a newly belligerent Russia and an increasingly militaristic China.

The day after the Battle in Brooklyn, Hillary Clinton returned to the campaign trail energized by all the great New York feedback last night.  This time the venue was a public housing unit and a senior center where the folks seemed to think she did a bang up job on Bernie.

In other news, Russia is stepping up military aggression at a level not seen in 20 years and both Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump think we should leave NATO.  Bernie could not explain, last night, how his position differed from Trump’s because – well – it doesn’t.

Finally the night has arrived and the much debated debate rolls out. Too late for should she or shouldn’t she.  The date was finally settled and here we are. The Duggal Greenhouse in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, formerly gray from floor to ceiling, is decorated and lit in red, white, and blue and packed.  Looks like a major award show but for the lineup of pundits.

Here’s the full transcript from the New York Times >>>>>

Below is my blow-by-blow.

DSCN4912

It begins.

DSCN4913 DSCN4914 DSCN4915 DSCN4916 DSCN4917 DSCN4918 DSCN4919 DSCN4920 DSCN4922 DSCN4923

Sanders starts with how well he has done in the primaries and how well-financed he is by small donors. Claims it is because he is telling the truth. Citizens United/campaign reform. Rigged economy.

(Hillary on voting rights here.)

Hillary happy to be back in NY, honored to have served, reviews 9/11 and jobs successes and keeping NY values at the center.  Says that will be the center of what she will do as POTUS.  Big, bold, progressive goals.

DSCN4925

Bernie on why he called her unqualified: Iraq War yada-yada-yada.

Hillary calls Bernie’s attack a phony attack.

DSCN4929 DSCN4930 DSCN4932 DSCN4933

Hillary: Elected in NY twice and Secretary of State, and hit Bernie on his NYDN interview.

When Sanders talks about super PACs and Wall St $: “Not just an attack on me it’s an attack on President Obama”

DSCN4934 DSCN4935

The crowd sounds like a boxing match audience.  Hillary, “I love being in Brooklyn.  This is great.”

From here on out I am calling it like a boxing match.

The Sanders sarcasm!  Really nasty.  Hillary DID go to Wall St. in 2007 and told them they had to stop.

Hillary counters the release of speeches question with a release of tax return question.  Same standards should apply to all.

Bernie inaccurately says she was not for the Fight for 15.  She was!  The history is here.

DSCN4936 DSCN4937 DSCN4938 DSCN4939 DSCN4941

The gunfight starts and things get so rapid-fire – impossible to keep up.  Hillary shot him down.

Hillary is asked what Bernie’s lies are and responds particularly her being in big oil’s pocket.  Hillary counters with need to talk about environmental issues.

Bernie says 43 fossil fuel execs maxed out in donations to Hillary.  Then he gets all Al Gore Global Crisis.  (He’d do well to remember how Al started that movie: “Hello, I’m Al Gore and i used to be your next president.”)

DSCN4944 DSCN4945

Hillary goes back to global crisis and revisits her Copenhagen visit with President Obama and Paris accords which Bernie attacked as not going far enough.  Rejecting the good in search of the perfect.

Hillary says it’s easy to diagnose the problem it’s harder to do something about the problem. Says she has not changed her view.  Natural gas is a way forward from coal. A bridge that needs to be crossed quickly.

Then Bernie makes Hillary’s point.  You can’t do it tomorrow.  Shoots down his whole anti-incremental premise in one sentence.  Shoots self in foot.

DSCN4946

Foreign policy.

Bernie spins Libya back to Iraq. Hillary straightens him out with requests from European and Arab allies that we provide support in Libya.

Bernie dodges question about how his position on NATO differs from Trump’s.  Say’s you have to ask Trump.

Hillary says Europe should be paying more, but that doesn’t mean that if they don’t we leave. Reminds us that NATO was with us in Afghanistan and points to Russian aggression.

DSCN4947 DSCN4948

Israel.

Hillary says Israel does not seek attacks from Hamas. Reminds us that she negotiated the cease fire. Stands by the two-state solution. Says if Arafat had agreed, we would have had a Palestinian state for 15 years already.

Hillary again says describing the problems is a lot easier than trying to solve it.  She reminds us that she is the one who focused on what was fair and right for the Palestinians and says as POTUS she will continue and get agreement.

Bernie makes a stupid remark.  Hillary says she never said Netanyahu is right all the timeHardly – but that’s just me since I was watching those two all along.

    DSCN4949 DSCN4950

Social reform.

Question to Bernie on how to afford his plans.  Once again Medicare for all, free tuition, paid for by a tax on speculation.

Again Hillary agrees with the diagnosis.  Will make medical coverage 100% and will address. college costs. But Bernie’s numbers don’t add up. A train wreck for the poor.

Hillary supports getting ACA working for everyone rather than obliterating it and starting over.

DSCN4951 DSCN4952

Social Security.

Hillary will tax passive income for the wealthy. More benefits for women who have been left behind in social security.  Hillary led the fight against privatization!

Hillary, “There is still something called Congress. I happen to support Democrats… Let’s get a Congress elected that will do something.”

Bernie would ask Obama to withdraw the Merrick Garland nomination.  Hillary will not. He says Garland has not made it clear that he will overturn Citizens United.

Hillary calls out moderator – no question on women’s health.

“We’re never asked about [abortion]—this goes to who we are as women: our rights, autonomy, our ability to make our own decisions.” —Hillary

Dana Bash points out that maybe Bernie is not a Democrat. He says he’s better than Hillary against Trump in the polls. Says there are a lot on Independents in the country. Bash points out that Hilalry has raised 15 million for Dems this year and he hasn’t raised any. He says it isn’t true. Bernie claims he has brought young people in.  He has not taught them to support other Dems – that’s just me.

Hillary points out that she has more votes than anybody. Broad-based inclusive coalition that will defeat any Republican.

Bash asks about Bernie taking the fight to the floor.  He says he’s going to win the nomination.

Hillary says her lead in pledged delegates is larger than what Obama had at this point in 2008 and repeats that she is taking nothing for granted and is going to work all the way to the end.

Bernie returns to the establishment and Wall St. You know the drill.

Closing statements.

Bernie grew up in Brooklyn. Yada yada yada. Wall St., Super PACs, yada yada. Health care, family leave, free tuition, yada yada.  Millions stand up, fight back, and bada-bing bada-boom create a government that works for more than the 1%

Hillary: honored to have been elected by the people of NY.  Challenges of 9/11, care for first responders, jobs created.  Stood before against vested interests.  Asking again  for their support.  Wants to take down the barriers.  Will work her heart out. Won’t make promises she can’t keep. Will deliver results.

“Together, we won’t just make promises we can’t keep—we’ll deliver results that will improve the lives of the people of America.” —Hillary

And it’s over.

DSCN4953 DSCN4955

Hillary stayed on her feet – on her toes!  She delivered.  She will deliver as president, too!

To hear Bernie Sanders at the National Action Network convention today,  you would think he was the only person crusading against the rollback of voting rights in many states.  So, just as a reminder, here are the times Hillary Clinton has spoken out against these actions and in favor of specific aggressive, progressive action to ensure and expand voter participation.  She has reminded audiences that Citizens United was initiated specifically against her, and she was the candidate who way last year called for automatic voter registration at age 18.

Bill and Hillary Clinton’s Statement on SCOTUS Voting Rights Act Decision

June 25, 2013

We are disappointed in today’s decision striking at the heart of the Voting Rights Act.  For over four decades the Act has succeeded in overcoming unconstitutional barriers to voting, and has demonstrated its central role in protecting this essential freedom.  We strongly urge Congress to put aside partisanship and politics, as it did in 2006, and promptly pass legislation to replace those portions of the Act struck down today.

On the Anniversary of the 19th Amendment Hillary Clinton Hits Back at Republican Voter Suppression

June 4, 2015

She called for reforms including:

  • expanded absentee and early voting;
  • online registration;
  • cutting delays;
  • 20 days of early in-person voting;
  • weekend voting;
  • universal automatic voter registration at 18 (She noted that 1/4 to 1/3 of those eligible are not registered);
  • abatement of the blizzard of old-fashioned paperwork in favor of streamlined, technology-assisted documentation.

Included in that post was an email from Hillary which read in part:

… in Texas, you can use your concealed weapon permit to vote, but not your student ID.This kind of disparity doesn’t happen by accident, and I’m going to do something about it. Let’s send a message that we won’t stand for this brutal undermining of the right to vote: Sign your name right now to support equal voting rights for every American.

Making it harder for Americans to vote is just wrong, and counter to the values we share. If you’re as outraged as I am, add your name right now to fight for fair voting rights for all:https://www.hillaryclinton.com/voting-rights/Thank you,

Hillary Clinton: “What part of democracy are they afraid of?”

June 13, 2015

We need Justices on the Supreme Court who will protect every citizen’s right to vote, (cheers, applause) rather than every corporation’s right to buy elections. (Cheers, applause.)

If necessary, I will support a constitutional amendment to undo the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United. (Cheers, applause.)

I want to make it easier for every citizen to vote. That’s why I’ve proposed universal, automatic registration and expanded early voting. (Cheers, applause.)

I’ll fight back against Republican efforts to disempower and disenfranchise young people, poor people, people with disabilities, and people of color. (Cheers, applause.)

What part of democracy are they afraid of?

On the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act last year, she circulated a request to her supporters via Twitter.  This was not an empty gesture or “busy work.”  It was a request for opinions which Hillary large scale on many issues and then recycles into policy plans – an extension of her listening tours that can include everyone – even those she does not meet personally.

So lest anyone walk away with the impression that Bernie Sanders alone stands for their right to vote, there is all of the above paired with Hillary’s work, going back to the 1972 McGovern campaign in Texas, to register voters and support Democratic candidates for office.  The latter cannot be claimed by the gentleman from Vermont.

Thanks to the New York Times for this guide to watching tonight’s debate.  I know; I know; I know!  A lot of people are tired of the debating and wish Hillary had said no, but Hillary does not back down in the face of a challenge. She is on home turf (her knowledge of Brooklyn precedes her Senate bid and goes all the way back to references to Brownsville in her Wellesley thesis).

The stakes could not be higher, and her ability in the contest could not be stronger.  It has been more than a month since the candidates have gone head-to-head in a debate.  So GO HILLARY!  We’ll be right behind you!

Here’s how you can watch.
