It takes time to process what happened. It was a loss, and so it is not unusual for our community to be experiencing stages of grief.
In her concession speech, Hillary told us,
“This is painful, and it will be for a long time. But I want you to remember this: Our campaign was never about one person or even one election. It was about the country we love and about building an America that’s hopeful, inclusive, and bighearted.”
Yes, it was about our country, about our future and that means it was about people too young to vote, many of whom demonstrated their disappointment the only way available to them, by walking out of school, by organizing peaceful protests, by exercising their 1st Amendment rights most creatively and vociferously. Good for them!
True, it was not about one person. It was about the vision our candidate and leader crafted for us by way of her interlocking plans – plans and intersections that she had little opportunity to expose in the broadest available forum – the presidential debates. We are so accustomed to seeing Hillary patiently attempt to wait out interruptions to get to the next topic. In these debates she did manage to interrupt the interruptions, but the distractions were too many to allow her to piece together her plans for the largest audiences of the campaign season.
Yet, it appears that voters, young and old, of every race and ethnicity, male and female, married and single, with and without kids, aging parents, disabilities, LGBT family and friends, cats, dogs, parakeets, goldfish, and hamsters-for-Hillary voted for Hillary Clinton! An immense number of voters! Hillary won the popular vote while losing the election. As of this posting, this map shows two states still too close to call. While the electoral votes have floated Trump over the 270 mark, Hillary remains ahead in the popular vote.
We have been through this before of course. In 2008 Hillary won the popular vote but amassed insufficient delegates in the primary. More nationally traumatically, in 2000 Al Gore was ahead in the popular vote, but Florida was too close to call. We all remember the nightmare of those five weeks when the recount was on, off, on again, and then off again and finally, for the country, Al Gore conceded.
There are steps Hillary could have taken on election day or even the day after. She could have held off on her concession. In close states, she probably could have requested recounts. What she did instead was to spare the country a protracted period of suspense and uncertainty. Like a flu shot, conceding hurt while preventing more devastating pain and suffering. She might have ended up conceding anyway, but doing so Wednesday morning, November 9, was so much better for the country than the first or second week of December. Hillary is a true patriot and selflessly put the country first. Forget trying to influence the Electoral College. Hillary has made her move.
Still 4 Hill, this blog, stood back and remained silent when voices exerted increasing pressure on Hillary, from late 2013 through early Spring 2015, to make this run. We knew the consequences would be a brutal campaign season. Once she decided, however, we were in this for the long run and did everything we could here to help. This community gave generously of time, energy, and funds (we tallied $11,432 – most of it in small, regular donations) to Hillary’s campaign. I could not be prouder of the efforts all of you put forth. I could not be prouder of our candidate. This Thanksgiving, I thank God for her and all of you! You are all warriors! Intrepid!
Hillary will probably end up winning the popular vote, and that speaks volumes about her message and her reach. Once, back in 2008 at an Eagle Academy graduation, a pastor who was giving the blessing told Hillary, “God isn’t finished with you yet.” I thought about that after she conceded. I believe it is still true. There is more to come from Hillary Clinton, and we can’t wait to see what it is.
One thing I have said here many times is that I am thankful to walk the earth at the same time as Hillary Clinton. We are all very lucky. Here is a letter from us to our Hillary.
Dearest Hillary,
We guess it is now OK to address you as Hillary since we have been on a first name basis for awhile now in emails (and we are thrilled). How do we thank the woman who left it all on the field in the biggest contest on earth? You have inspired and encouraged us in so many ways.
Thank you, Hillary, for all of your hard work, for all that you have taught us, for all the punishment you have taken, for being the first woman to win a major party’s presidential nomination. Thank you for always smiling, for fighting back when you had to, for being a role model for little girls and women, for running with honor, and for being our face to the world as secretary of state and as a presidential candidate. Thank you for your lovely graciousness, for your warmth, for your interest in our issues, and for taking the trouble always to look beautiful and unruffled. Women know what that takes. We appreciate it. Thank you for your boundless energy that spurred us on even when we thought we would collapse from the pace. So many times when we were waning we would “Hillary up” and move on to the next task.
Thank you for being an exemplar of what women can achieve given opportunity, a plank in your platform, not just in 2016, but all of your life. We know that being a public figure has never been especially comfortable for you, but you knew that being public made all of us more visible.
Thank you for being even-handed and fair. For all of your encouragement of women and girls, you never ignored or forgot the little boys. You included them, and they heard you. Despite media hype, you had solid support from men as well as women because you listened to everyone’s stories and concerns.
Thank you, Hillary. You are our hero! We all love you. We mean it!
With all our love always,
The Still 4 Hill Community
P.S. (From the author: I know that every single time I have ever been in your presence I have seemed to be reciting a litany of thank yous. They are from the heart and sincere. I am privileged to have made your acquaintance and thankful for all you have done. Happy Thanksgiving!)
Folks, I know these seem like dark days. Hillary’s struggle has not died with her campaign. She will find other paths. Like good scouts, we will be here to blaze the trail with her. We Are #StillWithHer because we are, after all, Still 4 Hill, and she is still with us. Add your own thoughts in the comment thread or just sign. I will print it out and send it to Hillary.
Thanksgiving is coming, the most American holiday aside from the 4th of July, and we have much to be thankful for.
Hillary, I will continue to get back up and stand for what’s right and good. You have shown me how. Thank you for fighting for us. I love you to the moon and back.

You are brilliant with the biggest heart of anyone I know and see the good in people and are the most positive person even in the face of this tragedy. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the good you have done, there is no one like you, when we cried you stood strong for the sake of America. As I spoke with you at the book signing don’t know if you heard me but the last thing I said to you was “you’re amazing”. I actually felt a bit dizzy after meeting you and knew I had been in the presence of greatness. So I repeat you are amazing and I thank you and wish the best to the best. You are absolutely the best America could ever hope to put forth as a shining example of what we stand for. I cannot fathom the strength and resilience you have shown with grace and dignity through thick and thin. I believe you are so underappreciated in this country, but I really think you’re one of the very best Americans we have ever had. I love you and of, course, I am heartbroken. Dear Still4Hill-Team,
hi! My name is Larissa Bastian. I’m a 24 year old student form Heidelberg, Germany. I can’t exactly tell you what event or what article got me interested in Hillary Clinton in the first place, but what I can tell you is that for the last four years, I have been the biggest Hillary Clinton admirer, fan and supporter. I just knew that she would run for president a second time, although my mum and everybody else told me that I was crazy. I always told them that while the pain of her first loss might still sit deep, her love for her country was just too big – that she would definitely run again if she felt that she was the person who could bring America forward. And when she finally announced her second shot at the White House – boy, I was beyond exhilarated. I was with her every step of the way. My friends and family always joked that I should join her campaign team because of how passionately I was campaigning for her.
On Tuesday, I followed the election from midnight until 9am German time. I was heartbroken and I cried. And I wanted to turn off the TV a long time before 9 am but I thought that that’s what you do for people you care for – you stick with them even if things don’t turn out the way you want, you stick with them for the highs and the lows.
Today, I guess I accept, of kind of accept, reality; that she lost. But I really want her to know that it is incomprehensible to me how some Americans could not just be completely swept off their feet by what an amazing woman she is. Her inspirational powers made it all the way across the pond to Germany.
In her concession speech, when she addressed the younger women whose champion she was and who put their faith in her – I felt like she was talking directly to me. She truly is my champion. She has been for the last four years and she will always be my champion. I guess that’s what I want her to know.
The day after the election I made a facebook post that I would like you to see. I have no idea if anyone here, besides the people I’m friends with on facebook, will read it – but it definitely came from the heart:
“Two days ago, I took my university exit exam – and I did it with a card in my bag that had pictures of Hillary Clinton and Rosie the Riveter on it as a lucky charm. I mean after all, a little female badass support never hurt nobody.
I’ve had a “Ready for Hillary” bumper sticker on the pin board in my room for over three years now. Ordering it was one of the first things I did when I started my studies at UNCA. And I’ve been looking forward to the day that Americans would cast their ballot for a long time now. I was beyond excited last night when I started watching the CNN live stream because I was so sure that America would do the right thing. But today I am nothing but disappointed. Disappointed, appalled and furious. You want to make America great again? Sorry but why then did you not recognize greatness when it was served to you on a silver plate? When I first started to read about Hillary Clinton and watch speeches and interviews of hers, when I looked at all the things she can fill her CV with, when I watched her speech at the Women’s Rights Conference in Beijing in 1995 and her speech on LGBT human rights in front of the UN Human Rights Council in 2011, I could not help but feel blown away, literally blown away, by what an intelligent, fierce, competent, outspoken, resilient and warm person this woman was. I thought Americans were so lucky to have a Hillary Clinton fight for them every single day; never giving up no matter how many obstacles have been put in her way. Why people see her as “unelectable”, “dishonest” and “cold” was and today more than ever is far beyond my comprehension. Why did you vote her “most admired woman in the US” for 20 years in a row then? And why so many people let this idiotic email “scandal” cloud their judgement is also absolutely crazy to me. Especially since I’m sure that most people in fact have no clue as to what it truly was/is about. And how people could think that someone who brags about grabbing women by their pussy on live TV should be more qualified to hold the highest office in the States – absolutely puzzling to me. If you “want your country back” or “make it great again” or whatever – why vote for someone who wants to build walls rather than tear them down; whose hostile and intolerant rhetoric divides people rather than unites them?!
I am appalled by the outcome of this election but most of all I am heart-broken. But dear Hillary Clinton, I hope you won’t let this election outcome break you. If anyone deserves to walk away from all this mess with their head held high, it’s you. I raise my hat to the stamina, strength and perseverance you have shown over the last two years. And all the years before. I thank you for putting a few more million cracks in that highest hardest glass ceiling and I am glad that there are women like you in the public arena that we can all look up to. So thank you – thank you for endless inspiration and motivation. It definitely did the trick for me two days ago.
… Well, this post just got really long but the disappointment in the face of last night’s election weighed really heavy on my chest. It just had to come out. And yes, this is a love letter; an homage to an absolute heroine of mine. Because she absolutely fucking deserves it. #still4hill #45ofhearts”
(PS: Dear Hillary Clinton, if you ever get to read this: We have an election coming up in Germany next year and I am sure the people of Germany would be more than happy to adopt you so you can run for Bundeskanzlerin here – in case our fantastic Angela Merkel decides not to run again. Polls showed that you would have won by a landslide here. So if you would like to run for public office again – anytime ;-))

Dear Hillary,
Please don’t ever underestimate the positive impact you have had on America and the rest of the world. One thing I will never forget about this election is a report on CNN of women and girls leaving their ‘I voted’ stickers on Susan B Anthony’s grave in tribute to her dedication in fighting for what she believed in. I am sure that a similar, powerful, grass-root tribute will one day be inspired by your campaign for president. Your legacy will be one of dedication and love for your country.
I am a Canadian and I like my Prime Minister but am ashamed that he and other world leaders stood by and let Trump say the things he did. I understand they are playing politics but what message does that send to children around the world when they say nothing? Thank you for being that voice and standing up for the rights of those whose voice may be less powerful than some. This whole election has made me question what leadership even means anymore.
I am a grade 1 teacher and have taught at International Schools around the world. I always use Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr as examples when I teach my students about being principled and having integrity. The civil rights movement of America did not just move your country forward, it was a beautiful and powerful example for the whole world. Whenever I would explain segregation, slavery or the holocaust to the delicate and fragile hearts and minds of my students I would tell them there were times in history when big groups of people made a mistake. We know now that they were wrong and we learnt from their mistakes. Now I am not so sure I can tell my students this and feel that it is the truth. How can so many intelligent kind-hearted Americans not see how a vote for you would take the country forward and how a vote for trump would be a huge step backwards?
I am looking to settle down back home now and have been looking for a job in my home town. I have been passed over twice in my applications. I know it is nothing at all like what you went through but through you I find it easier to pick myself up brush myself off and keep going. Your poignant and graceful concession speech is something that will stay with me for a long time. You are a great and important person. Thank you!
P.S. Are you absolutely sure that all the votes have been counted correctly? It just doesn’t seem possible!

Dear Hillary,
If I may, being that In the interim as we are currently still on a first-name basis, as an Ex-Marine I have gotten used to orders coming from different points and at different times. Returning said orders were always responded with an enthused and timely response, usually in triplicate. As a young writer I presently seem to be unprepared albeit, my dreams continue as thus they should. As a community worker, volunteer and ardent supporter of your present platform I can
now say that I have watched you from one of your earlier speeches when “Women’s Rights’ became Human Rights” and that was my clue to keep even a keener eye on your career in hopes of well . . . . . .
Thank you, Hillary, for being one of my teachers, along the way I have read about so much boundless love and respect for you through your own supports such as Cindi Swartz of Spokane who seemed downright unsettled by your latest news. I also want to thank you for all of your hard work through the decades. you have taught us many things and at times allowed me to fill in the blanks myself in attempting to deal with mentalities such as Mr. Trump (#Not My President). I would want to say thank you and all the women in my life for all the punishment you have taken as a species directly related to patriarchal and gender-based injustices and abuses.
Thank you for not only being a role model for little girls, women and females of all ages and descents but for young males also in that showing just who you are you have made a definite positive affect on their young minds. But please do not think that your job is done here. No Ma’am, you are not even close. And there is so much I could say thank you about, but yet it would only be redundant.
Of course I must thank you for your ‘boundless energy’ that always seemed to be on tap even when those of us who are older and almost ready to succumb to periods of rest would manage a second wind. Speaking of second winds I would also like to thank you for meeting with the Nisqually people (People of the Wind, People of the Water and People of the Land) on different occasions when you did, and Thank you for being an exemplar of what women can achieve given the opportunity.
Your whole life till now inferring a lifetime of profound care, makes you more interesting now when realizing that a public life being very comfortable for you, “being in public has made all of us more visible.”
Thank you for all of your encouragement of women and girls, you never ignored or forgot the little boys. You included them, and they heard you. Despite media hype, you have solid support from men and women alike because you listened to everyone’s stories and concerns, we workers for peace still have work to do.

Dear Hillary,
I’m an European who has been following you and I’ve been rooting for you ever since you announced your campaign. I rooted for you in 2008 but it was during this election that I really got to know you by reading anything and everything I could (especially your books left a profound impression on me) and by watching old interviews and most of your campaign events, interviews, debates, etc.
I admire you so much and you inspire me in ways that I didn’t imagine possible. I thank you for your grit, determination, heart, and spirit. You’ve strengthened my belief to always remain optimistic and keep going and your belief in love and kindness is something I try to live by but you’ve strengthened that belief; “Do all the good you can, for all the people you can, in all the ways you can, as long as you can.”
I’m sorry that things turned out this way. Even though you didn’t finally shatter that glass ceiling, and it will eventually be broken, I still feel like this was your time and you deserved to be the one to break it. However, I know you’ll keep fighting the good fight and continue to make this world a better one. Thank you for that. I believe things happen for a reason and I’m sure with time the reason for how this election ended will become clear.
For now, I hope you’re enjoying some time with your family and your dogs, maybe they all bring you joy and love, especially the little ones.
Thank you for everything, still with you in The Netherlands,
Chiara

To Mrs. Clinton:
What I’ve loved about you most is you never give up. There is an unsettling sadness inside me. For my family, my children, and my America. Trump won because he found common ground for the angry population, pointed at it and let the gun go off.
There is unity in love, but there is unity in hatred. The balance has been shifted and hatred is more apparent then ever. We have to maintain balance. I’m not a politician, I’ve never even voted before until this year, but I know when something is wrong, and right now it’s very wrong.
Why is it wrong?
The constitution states, “innocent until proven guilty.” Trump repeatedly called you “crooked” and stated that you were guilty. This was complete defamation of character. My question is why was this allowed? Why isn’t he being sued for this? When Trump talked about doing whatever he wanted to women the plug should have been pulled on him and it was not. People go to court and lose jobs over this stuff. Who is calling the shots in the sense that nothing was done regarding these issues? Haven’t we all attended the sexual harassment courses at our work places? Our system failed us when it wasn’t used to protect us from predators like Trump.
I have let my children know that they never need to call Trump the “President” or treat him with any sort of respect that we have issued a president in the past. If he was anyone else, the words and actions that came/come from him would never be allowed, and I would never allow the likes of him around my family. When we tell our children to respect just because he is in authority it teaches them to bow to the higher ups which is against what this country has worked all these years to get away from.
Final Thought:
My children turn to me for safety, I turn to my husband for safety, and we all turn to the president for safety of our home. There is no safety with Trump. Who do we turn to now?
Signed: A mother, a wife, an educated, successful career woman in the technology industry, an artist and a dreamer.

Thank you Hillary Clinton for being an inspiration for many of us. You fought a heck of battle and remained classy. Hold your head high and know you didnt fail Americans they failed themselves and you. They chose to be bamboozled by a snake oil salesman. Relax and enjoy your family time as Grandmom. God bless you

Dear Hillary,
You have stood for us for over thirty years, a model of intelligence, integrity and dignity! Thank you for everything you have done for this country. I can only pray as the world continues on without you as our President. I grieve for the children whose programs will be cut, for the veterans, the elderly, for minorities, for the disappearing middle class that will become poor, for the LBGT’s who will lose equal rights, and for all of the world who will no longer be safe without you. You were our savior.

Dear Hillary,
FOR the past few days, I was too stubborn to let go, sharing electoral petitions after more petitions, and still fighting for you. On Sat, Nov11th morning I’ve accepted because you have. We did the best we could. I am proud to be alive to witness history being made and to share those moments with you.
Many previous comments have taken the words from my heart and mind but I’ll say a few more.
You are one of greatest woman of all time and will always be my champion. All you have done are ingrained in my heart and mind forever. There will never be another woman of your caliber, experience and beauty from within such as yourself and because you have paved the way, it will be easier to have a female president one day.
I want to take this time to say Thank You! Hilary, for all you have done. I wish you and your family a peaceful, safe and wonderful holiday season. You have our deepest love and respect.
Hugs & much love from our family to yours,
Cynthia & family
Ps. My 6yo son, Desmond, saw you on YouTube and ran to me saying “I Love Hillary, she is so nice ”
PPS, From time to time, I look for your speeches to see and hear what you suggest we do.

Hillary, I met you down in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas in 1972. You were registering voters and I was a college kid working in the Francis Farenthold campaign for governor. When you first announced your run for President before the 2008 race, I immediately remembered your hard work many years earlier.I have been in the trenches working for you everyday since. Although, I am heartbroken right now, I do not regret for a moment the time devoted to this worthy cause. You are one of the greatest inspirations of my life, and I will always be with you.Thank you for your love of country and the many sacrifices that you have endured trying to make this world a better place. God bless you.

A person named “Hillary”
Courage. Compassion. Commitment. Words that define the person named ‘Hillary’ that I have been so honored to support. I first met Hillary in 1995 when she and Pres. Clinton stopped in Honolulu from their visit in Asia. Thousands of fellow Democrats lined up along the beach of Waikiki to shake hands with them. She was so warm and friendly. I was so impressed and when she ran for president in 2008, there was no one else I could have voted for.
Hillary was a warrior in the face of her supporters, when she joined the Obama campaign for president. That was destiny. That takes courage.
As Secretary of State, Hillary met with foreign leaders while visiting countries around the world where she spoke with the eloquence and knowledge of a true leader. In her journey she touched the heart and soul of people in countries and villages around the world. That is compassion.
In the face of endless scrutiny, she demonstrates humility and understanding. No question is too small to get a bucket full of answers. No scrutiny is marginalized, rather each is given its full measure of importance expected from a true leader. That is commitment.
As I watched her at the convention, I envisioned the image of her revered mother, Ms. Dorothy, proud of her daughter. The image of her friend the late Stephanie Tubbs Jones, who hits the campaign trail in spirit. Lastly, the image of an icon, Maya Angelou, who in 2008, inspired Hillary to ‘Rise Hillary Rise’ and people rise with her.
With an aching heart, Hillary, thank you for your service, thank you for getting up in the morning to make life better for others, thank you for inspiring young people to strive and become productive members of society, thank you for fighting with grace, humility, leadership and knowledge, thank you for showing the world your spirit of calmness, patience and grit. Never give up. The battle to love and kindness prevails.
I will always be a hillaryvillager. God bless.

I am very sad and disappointed that you did not get elected. Your knowledge, experience, talents and great education would have made our country a better place to live in these tough times. I am especially interested in your work to create a health care system for everyone in America. You also care about the environment and climate change. To win the popular vote says that something huge about electing a woman to be president. Please keep in touch with other strong women for future possibilities to elect a woman president. I am amazed that so many other countries have had women leaders. Also, how can a country like ours with so many smart people and so many resources elect a man who refuses to make his taxes available for scrutiny? What is this man hiding? It scares many of us and we have lost interest in our country. Keep up the good work that you do. Most of us believe that people were hired by our president elect to make you look bad. How sad to live in a world with so much anger and corruption.
