Hillary Clinton On Losing the 2016 Presidential Election & Her Marriage to Bill
by Hillary Rodham Clinton
For Better, for Worse
In this excerpt from her campaign memoir, Hillary Clinton reflects on the bond that has helped her through victory and defeat.
I was confident that Bill would be great at parenting. His father died before Bill was born; he knew how lucky he was to have this chance that his own father never had. Still, a lot of men are thrilled to be dads but not so thrilled about all the work that a child requires. The writer Katha Pollitt has observed how even the most egalitarian relationships can contort under the strain of child rearing, and all of a sudden the mom is expected to do everything, while the dad pitches in here and there. She calls it becoming “gender Republicans”—a nifty phrase, if perhaps a little unfair to all the feminist Republicans out there, who really do exist.
I knew that I had enough energy and devotion for two, if it turned out that Bill wasn’t a co-equal in the child-raising department. But I really hoped that wouldn’t happen. Our marriage had always been a true partnership. Though he was governor and then president—jobs that would seem to “beat” a lot of others, if you were the kind of person who ranked jobs like that—my career was important to me, too. So was my time and, more broadly, my identity. I couldn’t wait to become a mother, but I didn’t want to lose everything else about myself in the becoming. I was counting on my husband not just to respect that but also to join me in guarding against it.
So it was a wonderful thing when Chelsea arrived ….
This article brings back so many memories of that day. I was living in New York City on that horrible day. The shock and disbelief that this was an attack and not an accident was prevalent in all of us when we went in to the conference room at the law firm where I worked and saw the first plane hit the North Tower. To our horror, we saw the second plan aim for the South Tower and then we knew this was not an accident but that were being attacked. The prevalent questions in most of New Yorkers’ minds was not “who” but “why”.
We left work early that day and walked home as there were no cabs, busses, subways or cars allowed. It was like a war zone and eerily silent which was unheard of in NYC.
I remember clearly the next day, the junior Senator from New York, Hillary Clinton, was there at ground zero walking behind the mayor, Giuliani. I also remember during the 2016 election, in his zeal to attack her, Giuliani lied about her not being there to honor the victims but pictures don’t like and are proof that she was there. More than that, she also visited the hospitals to visit with the victims who survived getting out of the towers alive. One woman in paraticular, Lauren Manning, who was burned over 80% of her body was visited by Hillary. She comforted her and encouraged her. In fact, Hillary continued to stay in touch with her for years after that infamous day and she never talked about it. Did Giuliani do that? No! If he had, I’m sure we would have heard about it. Lauren and other 9/11 victims spoke at the DNC convention telling about Hillary’s compassion and hands on involvement with the victims and the first responders. Remember, she had just been elected to the Senate and she made a huge difference to these people’s lives because she knew how to get things done and she CARED.
My point, is that Hillary has done many such acts as this for people all over the country and used her power to make a difference in their lives but the media ignores these stories. Why? If it were any guy, they would be playing it over and over again and for doing far less. It just doesn’t make sense.
Because the media chooses to attack and discredit any woman who dares stand up to the patriarchy, we lose as a people because our choices are limited to the men they want to ensure get into power while effective, compassionate advocates like Hillary and other women who run the gauntlet required of them when they run for office are being held back. We could easily avoid so much of the pain and suffering if there were an equal balance of women in power. Unfortunately, insecure men greedy for power at any cost are willing to put us through these preventable atrocities in order to keep their power.
If Hillary were our President today, North Korea would not be the threat we are facing today. Real solutions would be offered to solve the overwhelming problems we are facing today due to too much talk and not enough work being done by our male dominated Congress and bi-partisanship would once again win the day, instead of the divisive rhetoric being spewed by trump, the republicans and, yes, Bernie sanders, our country would be united to bring about the change Hillary spoke about throughout the campaign but the media chose to ignore and only focused on e-mails that led nowhere in the end.
Someday, I am certain history will show how much we lost because the Obama administration and the intelligence community stood by and allowed the Russians to manipulate the election in trump’s favor and NEVER told the American people what was going on, and then the rogue Comey and the media sealed the deal. I can never forgive them for what they have done because Hillary did win the presidency and they all were complicit in denying the will of the people.

I can’t move it and agree with Brassy. Thank you for sharing this. I could see the 1st tower burning from a railroad overpass. Shortly afterwards saw a plane flying straight down the Hudson. It was the 2nd plane. Within minutes the guys on WINS said another plane hit the south tower. By the time I got to the next railroad overpass, both towers were spewing smoke. Eight people in my little little 3-story building had 11 relatives down there. One died. One woman’s husband and his mates were given sneakers for free by a nice guy with a shoe store. Then they walked all the way to Yankee Stadium. Her secretary got his message and was in tears passing it on: “Your husband is alive!” This day always brings it all right back.
