When a powerful man makes a remark as crass as the one Donald Trump made yesterday, two reactions are possible. 1. Sputtering speechlessness – a loss for words. 2. Reversion to kind – only a sh*t-for-brains would make a remark like that.
So profound was the shock at what he said, that most of us forgot that the comment came on the eighth anniversary of the earthquake that devastated Haiti.
Hillary Clinton did not forget.
At this point, I think I’m suffering from outrage fatigue. As if Trump’s outrages are not enough to overwhelm decent people, certain members of the media seem determined to compete with him–outrage for outrage. Today a two year old video surfaced of the always reliably misogynistic, Chris Matthews, preparing to interview HRC before the Iowa caucuses in 2016. He was “joking” about giving her “a Bill Cosby pill”. To be clear, this is a professional journalist with his own cable news show talking about slipping a date rape drug to the first viable female presidential candidate prior to an interview. And we’re just learning about it now! Apparently, MSNBC has been sitting on this for two years. But it will just be another outrage which eventually gets shoved down the memory hole along with Trump’s latest racist rant. I’m truly exhausted by all of this. Trump, the media, Trump’s GOP enablers. It is exhausting.

And yet MSNBC lets Joan Walsh go as an analyst but keeps Matthews – he’s the one that should be let go. Wow. Just wow. I have outrage fatigue, too. I can’t believe this stupid country elected this screw-up of a human being to occupy the Oval Office. So depressing. I struggle to keep the faith but hope a better day is coming. Hillary warned us during the debates (which she won) and she was right. Instead the media chose to focus on her emails and wikileaks which all seem like a nothing burger compared to what is going on now. They are responsible for how we got here – normalized Trump and painted Hillary as an unlikable liar. Fools.

Outrage fatigue – good term for it.
