Hillary was the final speaker at the 10th annual Women in the World Summit on Friday, April 12. She was interviewed by Fareed Zakaria.
Hillary Clinton: ‘Given the chance, many women will govern and lead differently’
In a conversation that had the audience cheering her on, the former secretary of state talked to Fareed Zakaria about the mess we’re in — and how women can help us get out of it.
Hillary Clinton was not going to pick a Democratic favorite.
“I am absolutely delighted to see this incredibly diverse field, and especially to have more than one woman running for President of the United States,” said the former secretary of state, four years to the day since launching her own presidential campaign. In a surprise interview with CNN host and newspaper columnist Fareed Zakaria that concluded the 10th annual Women in the World Summit in New York, Clinton would, however, offer a little advice to the 18 Democrats who have announced so far.
“I think you really have to do two things simultaneously, and it’s challenging,” she said.
First, she said, you have to present what it is that you want to do: “What is your vision? What is your hope for our country? How do you see the future? What are you going to propose that will make a difference in the lives of Americans and maintain the values, the ideals, of America in a very complex world?”
At the same time, she continued, you also have to be able to counter “the diversion and distraction that we see, unfortunately, working by the current incumbent in the White House. So you have to do that balancing act, and I think that we have excellent candidates who are demonstrating their ability to do that.”
Watching this interview this morning (I broke my no CNN rule) reminded me of all we have lost. Then, watching Twitter blow up this afternoon after Bernie attacked Neera Tanden (of all people!), reminded me that I am glad she is sitting this one out. I didn’t think we could have a primary more toxic than 2016, but if anyone can pull it off, Bernie can.

I also broke my CNN rule yesterday and again today only because the cathedral was burning, and they were covering that. I agree about the potential level of toxicity. In fact, yesterday morning when Facebook went down, I went to Twitter to search for posts about the Philadelphia event and encountered instead the vilest tweets about Hillary that I have seen in awhile. They were disgusting. This while she is not running! She compared life in politics to Game of Thrones which tells me two things: 1. She has watched GoT. 2. She thinks politics is a brutal, bloody business. Once again I find myself thinking that the people encouraging her to run again are selfish and don’t really care about her. If they cared, they would not be begging her to go back in.

Yes! We are now in day 3 of the “Neera Tanden is Satan” news cycle. Clearly, the Cult of Bernie and the media miss Hillary terribly. They just can’t quit her and are finding substitutes.

And why does Pete Buttigieg talk like a character in an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel? If a female candidate did that, the media would be screaming, “She’s so inauthentic and scripted!”

I haven’t heard him. South Bend is the third largest city in Indiana with a population about 36% the size of Newark, NJ’s largest city. There is already an experienced two-term mayor of the much larger city running who has gone on to the Senate, has two degrees from Stanford and a law degree from Yale. So I am not paying attention to Mayor Pete from South Bend.

Buttigieg is selling himself as uniquely capable of appealing to Republicans put off by Trump. But there is not a bit of evidence for this! South Bend is solidly Democratic and has been for decades. Hillary won it in 2016. So it is no great accomplishment that a Democrat was elected mayor. And the only time he ran statewide in 2010, Buttigieg was crushed, ironically, by the same margin Hillary lost the state in 2016.
