CHAPPAQUA – Former presidential candidate and Chappaqua resident Hillary Clinton was among the speakers Friday at a Lights for Liberty vigil that was held to protest the conditions and policies immigrants face at the border and at detention centers.

“It is an important moment for us to come together,” Clinton told attendees, according to Vimeo video posted Twitter. Speaking from the downtown gazebo, the former secretary of state said it was important “to do whatever part we can in trying to stand up for those who are voiceless.”

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry (this happens to me a lot lately) over all the people who just discovered that Trump is a horrendous racist YESTERDAY. It seems to be the same folks who went batsh*t when Hillary pointed out that many of his supporters are deplorable. Who Trump is was painfully apparent from the moment he came down that escalator.

    • Many of us in the NY Metro area knew it long before that. We tried to warn people. Those 3 little (c)s on Hillary’s emails meant something very different from all those (c)s on rental and lease applications. We also read the NY Times and saw his full page ad about the Central Park 5. Yet, they wanted him.

You would be amazed at how many out here in the middle of the country actually thought that Trump was that super saavy businessman he played on The Apprentice. They never realized that whole show was carefully scripted to convey that image of Trump. Racism gave us Trump, along with stupidity in general.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s quite ironic that a guy whose sole allegiance is to himself, Vladimir Putin, and the Russian Federation keeps lecturing the rest of us on patriotism and the need to be grateful to America? It’s just super weird that no one points out the contradictions in this.

There’s no easy answer to the question of how Trump’s overt racism will play out politically because we’ve never had a presidential candidate, much less a president, so openly weaponize racism for political gain. Richard Nixon, R. Reagan, and George H. W. Bush used coded messages, or dogwhistles, in very disturbing ways, but Trump replaced the dogwhistles with a bullhorn. So speculation about the political consequences is just that because there is no reliable precedent–unless you consider the 2016 presidential election. Needless to say, that one is not at all reassuring.
