Morning Joke with his knickers in a twist this morning because fans at World Series chanted “Lock him up!” at Trump last night. Didn’t hear this kind of concern when Trump and his minions were chanting this all thru 2016 campaign and at the RNC. Does he really not know the difference between a candidate or public office holder encouraging such chants and private citizens expressing outrage to a corrupt president? Scarborough really is deplorable. He’s pretending he has changed, but he hasn’t. Same goes for the Mrs.

And when the screen switched to military members, the boos quickly turned to cheers. Trump defiles the office of president every day. It is not disrespectful to that office to express disgust with this particular office holder.

Just because revenge porn is illegal, as it should be, does not mean that taking naked pix of yourself is a good idea. If you are a member of congress or a candidate for congress, it is a horrendously bad idea. But apparently this is a very common practice among a lot of young people. I guess I’m an old fuddy duddy for thinking it’s really a VERY STUPID THING TO DO.

Brassy,
Yes, sadly Congresswoman Hill made a really bad judgment call. However, Bill Clinton (much older than she) when he made a really bad judgment call with Monica. He didn’t resign even though impeached for lying about it. Sadly, women are still being judged and treated differently than men when it comes to anything of a sexual nature. Men get away with far worse misdeeds than any woman does for far less.
If only men were held to the same standard they hold women to (they could never rise to that standard, but if they could), we would be a lot better off than we are now with regard to the kind of world we live in.
Makes you want to scream that we still have to put up with their double standard.

Unfortunately, we won’t be able to dismantle the double standard culture if so many of our future women leaders are photographing themselves in compromised situations. I’m afraid all the defenses of Rep. Hill on social media, while understandable, are normalizing her bad judgment. I would rather encourage young women to live their lives with dignity and self respect. They should be told in no uncertain terms that photos are forever and the internet isn’t going away. And people they may trust today may prove to be untrustworthy in the future. I know this isn’t a popular opinion, especially among the young who have grown up with cell phones and ever present cameras. But they need to understand that all their decisions now will have long term consequences.

Brassy,
I think young men should be expected to comport themselves with appropriate behavior too. Good behavior should not be the total responsibility of women while the men get to behave as badly as they want to without any real consequence. Therein lies the real problem. After all, Hillary never made the kind of mistake that Katie Hill did, but look how she was treated! It doesn’t matter if women do the right thing, follow all the rules as “good girls”, insecure men will always find a way to undermine them for some ridiculous reason and it’s time we said enough is enough. Double standards will not stop by our accepting them.
Back in the early 70s, Golda Meir, the then prime minister of Israel, was faced with a government cabinet full of men discussing how best to curb a wave of violent rapes. The idea of banning women from the streets after dark was floated. Meir made a counteroffer.
“Men are attacking women,” she said. “Not the other way around. If there is going to be a curfew, let the men be locked up, not the women.”
Golda got it right.

My advice to a young man would be the same. But a double standard is in place. It won’t go away without credible leadership from future female leaders.

Brassy,
I’m sorry, but I disagree and must express why I do.
Who decides what is “credible leadership” from female leaders? Men, primarily, because they hold the lion’s share of power and therefore can undermine any woman (no matter her credentials) who threatens the power of the patriarchy. They will never hold each other to that same standard. Why? Because it’s an impossible standard to reach, AND THEY KNOW IT. We should have learned by now that no woman will ever meet the credible leadership threshhold as long as men hold the measuring stick; otherwise, why did they spend decades and millions of taxpayer dollars attacking Hillary? She is the best example of credible leadership we have seen in our lifetime and she still could not get the support from the male run media when she was being grossly and unfairly attacked by trump, sanders, et al., who were far less qualified than she.
The key to ending the double standard is for women to start supporting each other and stop expecting perfection from them (which no one, male or female, can achieve). Men are willing to turn a blind eye to another man’s failures, weaknesses and incompetence over a woman of impeccable qualifications. How else could trump be taken seriously without being vetted or even seriously questioned by the media when he ran with no discernable qualifications for the presidency?
If we want to see real progress in the near future, it will come down to women being realistic in how they measure each other’s capability as a leader and not expect male support in that process. Even if women play by the same rules the men play by and support each other even when things get dicey, we will still hold a higher standard for each other than men historically have had for each other. WE’VE NEVER EXPERIENCED THE ENTITLEMENT THAT MEN HAVE FROM BIRTH.
If women continue to expect perfection from each other, the double standard will never end.

Straw man alert! I never implied that I expect perfection from female leaders and I think women choose their leaders, not men. Some women will inevitably fall short of what other women are seeking in their leaders. For me, Katie Hill falls short. For now. Maybe some day she can regain my confidence, but I stand by what I originally said. What she did was VERY STUPID. And just from a Google search, I suspect that what we know about her behavior is just the tip of the iceberg. One thing we can agree on–we disagree. Hope we can still be friends!

Brassy,
On the same basis, I could hold you to that “straw man argument” alert! It’s hard to explain things clearly in a one way conversation and in writing, so, I think you misunderstand the points I was trying to make too.
Would it be possible to believe that, if we base our support for a politician contingent on their NEVER having made a “stupid” decision, then wouldn’t it stand to reason that most men would never qualify for elected office or those already in office would have to resign just like Hill!
You say women choose their leaders, but what are the qualifying factors in making that choice? I say, not as long as they remain conditioned to hold women to a higher standard than they do men, then the playing field will always favor the men as the more qualified leader (despite the contrary being true).
Since men will never hold themselves to the same standards to which they hold women, then I think it’s high time that women begin holding those women in office or running for office to the same standard we hold the men. Otherwise, we can never expect to see an equal representation of women in elected office.
Obviously, we both hold passionately to our beliefs and yes, we are still friends!
