In the runup to the New York primary on the 19th, Hillary had a creditable collection of endorsements from local papers. As we head into tomorrow with important primaries in five eastern states, Hillary for America has summarized for us the endorsements she has received from additional prominent publications.
First among the big New York papers to endorse Hillary Clinton was the New York Times. Hillary won New York, and she won it big. Nothing will prevent the forever antipathetic MoDo from mounting her screeds against Hillary and the Clintons, but that is OK since her CDS was diagnosed long ago. We know she has a condition.
Prior to the endorsement, we saw NYT attacks on Hillary in the course of the campaign aside from MoDo’s predictable volleys. Not since the endorsement has there been anything as personal, unmerited, and outrageous as Timothy Egan’s assault on Hillary’s personality here.
It is fair enough to quote her own self-assessment as not a natural politician. But to feed a false portrayal of Hillary Clinton, and that is clearly the intent, as removed, insulated, and awkward is editorial malpractice.
Anyone who has had the privilege to encounter Hillary Clinton can attest to her undivided attention and sincere interest in their words. People say that Bill Clinton makes you feel like the only person in the room. Hillary has that effect as well. Hand to hand, face to face, eyeball to eyeball she locks onto you and stays with you for as long as it takes. She listens. She remembers. She takes action.
People with big issues who have spoken with her know this. Their problems have generated policies in the Senate and policy plans in this campaign. Hillary Clinton, far from being distant and defensive as she is often portrayed, is one of the most open, engaging, and attentive people you can ever hope to meet.
Timothy Egan makes some good points in his piece, but to end it with an indictment of Hillary’s personality goes way beyond the pale. What does he really know about her personality? How does he know? Hillary Clinton is a sincere, hardworking, and very warm person who deserves better treatment than this from a paper that endorsed her.
Freddie Graves walked with her daughter a few blocks from her house to the Wilson-Gray YMCA on Albany Avenue Thursday and entered the Hillary Clinton town hall undecided between the former secretary of state and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
She agrees with what Sanders says and likes the tone of his rhetoric, but doesn’t think he has the political chops to turn it into results. As for Hillary, she has long viewed the Clintons as a unit, and held against her the 1994 omnibus crime act, “the law to incarcerate African Americans at a higher rate,” as Graves calls it.
Graves lingered in the YMCA gym long after the crowd was gone, and thought about her new resolve.
“I’m convinced now. I just like her message and I like her sincerity,” Graves said. I’m looking at Hillary as her own person and I’m glad that I came. … I was putting her in her husband’s shoes until today.”
If you have friends in New York, or if you are a New Yorker with friends in other parts of the Empire State, you can encourage them to vote for Hillary!

THE BOTTOM LINE
The right blend of knowledge, skill and experience.
Hillary Clinton, who is aiming to shatter the nation’s highest glass ceiling, has the right blend of knowledge, skill and experience to be an outstanding candidate for president.
We have seen her in action for decades — as an active first lady; as an effective eight-year senator who delivered for New York, including billions in federal aid to rebuild New York City after 9/11; and in four years as secretary of state, when she played a critical role in levying crippling sanctions on Iran and in the killing of Osama bin Laden.
That experience on the world stage makes her the best choice to deal with its complicated troubles, especially terrorism, a newly belligerent Russia and an increasingly militaristic China.
Hillary brought her campaign to the borough that is home to her headquarters this evening and was a bright ray of sunshine on a damp, gray day. She stopped off earlier at a popular cheesecake spot.
It was pretty quiet for a caucus day. Bernie crowed about his “win” in Wyoming. To be clear, current figures, with 22 of 23 precincts in show a 44.3%-55.7% margin allotting Bernie 7 delegates and Hillary 7 delegates. So-ooo…. we’re still getting delegates and staying ahead, and it was nowhere near the 25/75 margin they hoped to get.
Nonetheless, we must remain vigilant. Robby Mook sent this disconcerting warning out today. It is more important than ever that we rack up big wins on the 19th and 26th.
Bernie’s campaign has a new strategy — in states they didn’t win like Nevada and Florida, they’re flooding local conventions with volunteers to try to “steal” delegates for Bernie, overturning the will of the voters.
“Steal” isn’t my word. It’s what one of Bernie’s former top staffers said: “Volunteers mobilized to get tons of people to show up to the state convention and actually steal the day for Bernie.”
If they can’t win contests outright, they’ve decided to try and sway superdelegates and even pledged delegates to their side — and in some states, it’s working. That means we need to bring home even BIGGER wins in New York, Pennsylvania, and more to make sure voters’ voices get heard and Hillary wins this nomination.
So let’s do what we can to keep Hillary ahead and get to the 2383! If you are able, please donate, volunteer, make calls!
Our country sits on the precipice. We will either continue to rise up out of the ashes of the Bush presidency or go down in flames. The past seven years have been a struggle, to say the least. President Barack Obama has done a remarkable job trying to right this ship we call America, while having to ride the storm surges of the right wing trying to sink us at every turn. We have come a long way, but there are still so many challenges ahead of us.
As New York heads to the polls in just a few short weeks, we must be clear in our objectives. We must understand our history and who has written it. So now it is our turn to correct some of the misnomers and half truths as we go forward to this pivotal election, which, as many pundits have noted, may be the most consequential in our lifetime.
For the first time, in a very long time, the New York presidential primary will actually count, and count with decisive numbers. And that is why this endorsement may be one of the most important ones of our generation.
Hillary Clinton Remarks in Detroit, Michigan Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton criticized the GOP candidates for their debate performance Thursday night saying instead of throwing insults at each other they should’ve been focused on issues such as growing the U.S. economy. The former Secretary of State’s comments came during a policy speech in Detroit, Michigan. In this speech she outlined some of her proposals to create more jobs and grow the economy.
Proposes ‘Clawback’ of Tax Benefits from Corporations that Ship Jobs Overseas
In a speech today at Detroit Manufacturing Systems, Hillary Clinton said that there has been a breakdown of America’s basic bargain – that fundamental idea that if you work hard and do your part, you’ll be able to get ahead and stay ahead – and outlined her plans for a “new bargain” to create more, good-paying jobs in America.
Clinton’s “new bargain” is built on three principles: (1) corporations have to do right by their communities and our country; (2) employers should treat workers like assets to be invested in, rather than costs to be cut, and; (3) government should stop rewarding greed and special interests, and instead invest in the sources of the good jobs of the future.
Hillary Clinton said, “Throughout this campaign, I’ve said that creating good-paying jobs and raising incomes is the defining economic challenge of our time, and that in order to get where I want us to go, we need growth that is strong, fair, and long-term. That’s why we need a new bargain for the new economy. A new bargain to ensure that the jobs of the future are good-paying American jobs. The kind that provide both good incomes and the dignity, pride and sense of purpose.”
Clinton specifically offered a new “clawback” proposal that would rescind tax relief and other incentives for corporations if they move overseas any jobs, facilities or production that had benefitted from the tax breaks. The revenue raised by the clawback would be used to encourage investment in the U.S. – including in the communities that had seen jobs or production depart.
Hillary Clinton said, “Corporations benefit in so many ways from being right here in the United States. But too often, this relationship feels like a one-way street. Too many are not holding up their end of the bargain. They don’t recognize that one of the biggest assets on their balance sheet in America.”
Clinton has been working on this proposal with economic advisors in recent months as she has sought new ways to confront the problem of reduced economic patriotism.
The “clawback” is now the third in a series of tax proposals she has put forward to confront corporations that walk out on America. In December, she called for an exit tax on companies that use the tax gimmick of an “inversion” to move their officially listed headquarters location abroad in order to reduce their tax bill here in the U.S. Later that same month, she outlined a plan to crack down on the practice of corporate “earnings stripping,” through which large, multinational corporations systematically shift profits overseas to avoid U.S. taxation.

Here are a few of her remarks, but the most important thing she said did not make it into a tweet.
There are people in both parties who think we can somehow shut ourselves off from the world. But even if the United States never signs another trade deal, globalization isn’t going away.

Honesty is very important, and Hillary has said that she does not want to overpromise. It may sound good to hear candidates say that they will never ever ever get back together with country or region X,Y, or Z in a trade pact, but Hillary looks us in the eye and tells us the truth. We are all in this boat together, so we might as well all row in the same direction.
"As Detroit proves every day, what has been broken can be re-built, stronger than before." —Hillary in Michigan
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton slams her rivals’ stance on the economy at the Republican debate in Detroit, says “it was basically an afterthought.” Rough Cut (no reporter narration).
United Farm Workers President Arturo S. Rodriguez issued the following statement from the union’s Keene, Calif. headquarters:
After elected farm worker leaders from companies under UFW contracts discussed the presidential race for a year, studied the candidates’ words, actions and careers, and recently spent an hour closely interviewing Hillary Clinton on key farm worker issues, the United Farm Workers believes Secretary Clinton is the strong, most respectful leader our country needs now.
Hillary Clinton has consistently stood with farm workers and immigrants, fought on behalf of and voted for comprehensive immigration reform, repeatedly sponsored the UFW-negotiated AgJobs legislation as a senator, supported farm workers in their fights for union contracts and worked to end discrimination against them.
The consistent respect Hillary Clinton has shown farm workers over her career, her willingness to answer tough questions, her commitment and work to end prejudice and her determination in the pursuit of progressive change have earned our support. Hillary Clinton has the strong resolve needed to make change happen. She is the most experienced candidate for president in recent memory. And she is the best equipped to defeat the nativist, hateful forces of the current Republican front-runner.
Leaders elected by UFW members under union contracts Maria de Jesus and Guillermo Garcia of Ventura County (Calif), Liliana Herrera of Sonoma County (Calif.), Efren Fraide and Justo Tovar of Monterey County (Calif.), Agustin Garcia of Fresno County (Calif.), Jose Sanchez of San Joaquin County (Calif.), Efren Ayala of Tulare County (Calif.), Beronica Rivas and Salvador Castillo of Kern County (Calif.), Gerardo Rios of Yakima (Wash.) and Raul Esparza of Hermiston (Ore.) were among those who asked questions of Secretary Clinton and made motions to her for President. They can be made available for comment.
Hillary Clinton released the following statement after earning the endorsement of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) BOLD PAC. BOLD PAC is the political arm of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
“I am honored to have earned the endorsement of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus BOLD PAC—a strong voice in Congress and across the country for the Latino community.
“I have always been proud to stand with the Latino community not only in fighting for comprehensive immigration reform, but fighting for all families to have the chance to get ahead and stay ahead. As a Senator, I was proud to vote for Ted Kennedy’s immigration reform bill in 2007 and to co-sponsor the DREAM Act in 2003. As President, not only will I protect President Obama’s executive orders and look to go further, but I will fight for comprehensive immigration reform legislation from the moment I take office. While immigration reform is vital for our families, our economy, and our future, it’s not the only issue where the Latino community needs progress. Nearly half of Latinos live in counties that don’t meet EPA air quality standards. Latinos between 25 and 29 are less than half as likely to have a bachelor’s degree as whites. Latinas working full time make just 54 cents for every dollar a white man earns. We need equal pay for women, environmental justice for families, and good schools in every ZIP code for our kids.
“I am proud to stand with the CHC BOLD PAC in all of these fights—because I believe that when families are strong, America is strong.”
Jerseyites interviewed on News 4 New Yorktonight were less than enthralled with Chris Christie’s endorsement of Donald Trump. Surprisingly, the men who spoke were more dead set against this brotherhood than were the women. A few of the women said they would probably consider voting for Trump as a result of Christie’s blessing, but the men were firmly entrenched against both and said they would not be voting for Trump no matter what.
If the bully boys eating up most of the air time on cable today got on your last nerve, this has to soothe.
Chris Christie and his wife Mary Pat, LEFT, with former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman at the Monmouth County GOP Headquarters in Freehold, NJ (Jennifer Brown / Star-Ledger)
Gov. Chris Christie’s endorsement of Donald Trump is giving many people in New Jersey indigestion, but none more than former Gov. Christie Whitman, a Republican who has watched in horror as her party drifted rightward for the last decade.
I have a full column on Christie’s shameless stunt coming tomorrow, but I wanted to share Whitman’s quotes right away.
First, she says she’s planning to vote for Hillary Clinton if Trump gets the nod. She’s keeping her options open, in case we find out something new and horrible about Hillary. But that’s her plan now:
“You’ll see a lot of Republicans do that,” Whitman told me. “We don’t want to. But I know I won’t vote for Trump.”
The real juice came when I asked her about Christie’s move:
There has been a bit of a love hate relationship between Whitman and Jerseyites. Elected twice to the Governor’s mansion, she was seriously courted by some to run for president while many residents said “Go ahead! Take her out of NJ!” But when George W. Bush did remove her from NJ mid term, some of us felt remorse.
Bush drafted her to head the EPA, and Christie went to DC much the way Hillary went to the Senate – nose to the grindstone with the intention of fulfilling her obligations honorably and honestly. When the administration kneecapped her placing obstacles before her efforts all along the way, she finally resigned.
It rankled. She had given George W. Barney. The adorable Scottish Terrier was the son of her own dog, Coors. Barney was only a tiny puppy at the time and was too young to move into the White House for several weeks. Like “First Kids,” presidential pets are non-partisan and generally well-liked. We were proud of our little Jersey dog in DC. It was disheartening that W. should take our governor away, accept her gift, and then treat her so badly.
In recent years, Christie has remarked about the state of the Republican Party and the turns it has taken. In early 2005, she released a book entitled It’s My Party, Too: Taking Back the Republican Party… And Bringing the Country Together Again. Today’s reaction does not come as much of a surprise to those of us in NJ who have heard or read of her dissatisfaction with the party, but for those unfamiliar with Christine Todd Whitman, even for those of us who are less than surprised, the comments put a rainbow on the end of a stormy day.
Tom Moran promises a follow-up tomorrow. Meanwhile, as a Jersey girl, I am proud of my former governor!
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid announced Wednesday in an exclusive interview with CNN that he is endorsing Hillary Clinton for president, a sign that Democratic leaders are eager to put the party’s contentious primary fight behind them.
The Nevada Democrat issued a plea for his party to consolidate behind Clinton, who has struggled to fend off an insurgent campaign from Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont.
“I think the middle class would be better served by Hillary,” Reid said.
“I think that my work with her over the years has been something that I have looked upon with awe. She was the first lady. She started the trend toward looking to do something about health care. She understood the issue well, she was the front on the health care during that administration,” he said.
Reid added, “I also think she’s the woman to be the first president of the United states that’s a female.”
