Last month, I joined our friends at the Albert Shanker Institute and the American Federation of Teachers for a conference on the ways we can protect and defend American democracy. In my opening remarks, I spoke about the risks that voter suppression, fake news, and a lack of election security pose to our country’s very foundation.
The founders of four Onward Together partner and grantee organizations also joined the conference as panelists that day: Eric Holder of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, Andrew Gillum of Forward Florida, Leah Greenberg of Indivisible, and María Teresa Kumar of Voto Latino.

Albert Shanker Institute Published: 16 September 2019Hillary Rodham Clinton will deliver an opening keynote on the future of democracy at an all-day conference Tuesday held in Washington, D.C. and co-organized by the Albert Shanker Institute, the American Federation of Teachers and Onward Together, the organization founded and led by Clinton.
Following Clinton’s address, a lineup of prominent activists, politicians and intellectuals, led by AFT President Randi Weingarten, will discuss and debate how democratic norms and institutions are under assault, with a particular focus on “Civic Engagement in an Age of Democratic Peril.” Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) will address the lunch session and former Attorney General Eric Holder will anchor the afternoon panel “Lift Every Voice: Voter Rights and Voter Suppression.”
The event is full, but will be livestreamed. It begins at 9 a.m. Eastern time Sept. 17:

When this country was founded, voting was a right for some and a pipe dream for others. While generations of courageous advocates and leaders have helped extend that right to more and more people, the “one voice, one vote” system is still up against the mass gerrymandering that has happened under Republican-controlled state legislatures and governorships since the 2010 elections.Our friends at the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, an Onward Together grantee, have a plan to combat map manipulation by targeting 16 state legislative chambers and three gubernatorial races in 2019-2020 cycle. Republicans in states across the country have manipulated the system in order to choose their voters, rather than letting voters choose their representatives. We’ve seen the effects of gerrymandering at every level, including more than one presidential election in recent history. Ending “map manipulation” at the national and state level is crucial to the future of our democracy.

Wednesday marked one year since the United States District Court in the Southern District of California ordered ICE and the U.S. government to reunite an asylum-seeking mother and her seven-year-old daughter — which they did, after months of waiting.
Meanwhile, hundreds of families are still waiting to be reunited, and more are being separated and sent to isolated detention centers. In the past few weeks, we’ve seen reports about CBP forcing children to take care of toddlers in holding cells, and DOJ lawyers actually trying to argue that the Trump administration doesn’t have an obligation to provide detained children with items as basic as blankets, toothbrushes, or soap.
Together, we’ve raised more than $700,000 this week that will help get basic resources, legal aid, and advocates to children at the border, among other things — with our help, Families Belong Together has been able to cover the costs of flights for families finally being reunited and secure safe housing for vulnerable immigrants. Thank you for making that possible. It’s critical that we provide a counter-point to the unconscionable things being done to refugee and immigrant families in our names.

Earlier this month, I went to a reunion at Wellesley College, my alma mater, where I celebrated alongside my classmates and considered how far we’ve come in fifty years. So many of the things we take for granted these days would have seemed far-fetched back then, and yet, we believed that progress was possible and that we could see it made real.
Our Onward Together partner organizations have been at the forefront of the fight for that progress these last few years. They’re recruiting and training hundreds of diverse candidates for office, mobilizing voters who may not otherwise feel engaged in the political process, fighting back against the administration’s attacks on civil rights and access to the polls, and more. They’re organizing domestic workers, communities of color, young activists, and even campaign staffers. They are the future.
Today, I’m proud to announce the winners of our first-ever Onward Together grant contest: Color of Change PAC took first place, while Demand Justice, Run for Something, and Voto Latino will also receive prizes as runners-up. As always, your support makes it possible for us to fund these organizations that have been such bright spots recently, and I’m grateful to you for that.

After the 2020 census, state legislatures will redraw district lines across all fifty states. We only have to look at the way those lines have shifted over the last few decades to infer that Republicans will feel comfortable using the redistricting progress to disenfranchise voters and ensure GOP majorities for the next decade.
Gerrymandering is a critical issue, and one that should define the 2020 election. I wasn’t at all surprised to learn that three of our Onward Together partner organizations have put their heads together and come up with a plan to ensure that Democrats win key elections next fall.
This week, our partners at Swing Left, Run for Something, and Arena launched the Grassroots Redistricting Project. They’re targeting legislative chambers in nine states to ensure that Democrats have a fair say in the redistricting process, but they’ll need the power of this team to make it happen.

Over and over again, this team has proven that the right candidate for office does not have to look a certain way or come from a certain zip code. Instead, what makes a leader is a passion for solving the problems that face our country and our communities, and a willingness to listen. We saw that earlier this year, when the most diverse freshman class yet was sworn into the House of Representatives — something that would have been unimaginable even a few decades ago.
It may not ever be easy. But our country was founded on the promise that it would change — that our union would have to be made more perfect.
The National Democratic Training Committee believes that change starts by giving every Democrat the tools to run for office. They work hand in hand with two of our incredible partner organizations, Emerge America and Run for Something, to offer online campaign trainings on everything from fundraising to field programs — entirely for free.
I’m so proud that Onward Together has been able to support the National Democratic Training Committee. Their work is critical to electing Democrats in thousands of offices across the country now and for years to come. This team sprang into action — we’ve since raised more than $1.8 million for the groups working to protect the kids and families separated by ICE, including “Families Belong Together,” the family separation initiative from the National Domestic Workers Alliance.
The National Domestic Workers Alliance has been at the forefront of the fight to protect domestic workers, immigrants, women, and their families for more than a decade. The issues they have taken on are critical and cut right to the heart of who we are as a country. Late last year, I met with Ai-jen Poo and Alicia Garza to discuss ways that this team could aid their work over the coming months and years. I’m proud to tell you that NDWA has since joined the Onward Together family as an official partner.
The fights ahead are many — from reuniting families still separated to making sure that the workers who care for homes and families across the country are treated with dignity and respect. I’m honored to partner with NDWA, and I hope you’ll take a moment to learn a little more about what they’re working on.

The organization: National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA)The organizers: Ai-jen Poo, longtime activist for caregivers and current director of NDWA; Alicia Garza, co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Global Network and current strategy director at NDWA
The mission: To work for the respect, recognition, and inclusion in labor protections for domestic workers
The story: Two million workers — nearly all of them women — take care of the nation’s homes and families, particularly children and the elderly. Most of those two million are immigrant women and women of color. Historically, they have had few legal rights, making them vulnerable to exploitation, particularly in the case of undocumented migrant workers. Founded at the U.S. Social Forum in Atlanta, Georgia in 2007, NDWA has since launched an individual membership program, which provides benefits, training, and community to domestic workers in the U.S.
The latest: Through their “Families Belong Together” initiative, NDWA lead the fight last summer against the Trump administration’s cruel family separation policies, including more than 600 marches across all 50 states on June 30th. In November, they harnessed that incredible national energy to get people to the polls to vote for candidates who will protect domestic workers and immigrant communities alike.
The next step: Together with Senator Kamala Harris and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, NDWA recently announced Domestic Workers Bill of Rights — a groundbreaking piece of legislation that would improve the lives of domestic workers and transform the way people work in America.
