Bernie Sanders’ ‘Most Loyal Republican Friend’ Gets Behind Hillary Clinton

Vermont businessman Tony Pomerleau is supporting the same presidential candidate as his longtime friend, despite their ideological differences.

09/29/2016

The latest Republican to endorse Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton over GOP nominee Donald Trump is a longtime friend of Clinton’s opponent in the primaries, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

Tony Pomerleau, a prominent Republican businessman and developer in Sanders’ hometown of Burlington, Vermont, endorsed Clinton in a charmingly brief letter to the Clinton campaign that was provided to The Huffington Post.

“I am a loyal Republican born in 1917 and the first time a woman could vote was in 1919,” the letter reads. “I will be most happy to cast my vote to the first woman president of the United States of America. I am a loyal friend of Bernie Sanders and in Vermont they call us the ‘Odd Couple.’”

Two words:  She won! So much of the assessment of presidential debates relies on the visual that it matters little if we offer the words.  Transcripts will become available, and they will be added here when they are.  For now, however, let’s look at the faces. In 1960, on this date,  it was the faces that told the story .

Today, some pundits on the Sunday morning circuits were saying that, in the debate tomorrow, Hillary should concentrate on her policies and ignore Trump’s temperament and policies – such as they are.  That’s like trying to pry Lincoln off a penny.

One thing Hillary has to do is make clear the contrast between her proposed policies and Trump’s sketchy plans.  Trump tends to introduce his agenda explosively. His unstable temperament is part and parcel of his proposals. It shapes and conveys all at once. The ideas burst forth in spurts and tweets, long on angry force and short on details.

If Hillary’s campaign is any indication of how she intends to go at Trump, she will not be ignoring his shady side, and why should she? There is a lot of blank space in Trump’s plans. Here is the campaign’s latest volley.

New HFA Ad On Trump’s Failure to Release Tax Returns, Hiding His Russian Business Dealings

Hillary for America is airing a new television ad which links Donald Trump’s unprecedented refusal to release his tax returns to the growing concerns about his financial conflicts of interests especially with Russia. Trump has failed to disclose the most basic information expected from presidential candidates and the latest revelations about his connections to Russia make it all the more pressing that he disclose the extent of his financial network and how he will divest from it.

HFA Russian Dealings Ad

The ad highlights new revelations this week that Trump’s financial ties to Russia are far more extensive than previously understood. Trump has apparently profited from “hundreds of millions of dollars” invested by Russian business interests which could impact his national security decisions as president. ABC News reported this week that Trump profited from hundreds of millions of dollars in Russian business deals, potentially giving motive to his Pro-Kremlin policies. In addition, Yahoo News discovered that one of Trump’s foreign policy advisors is being investigated by U.S. intelligence officials for ties to the Kremlin. Sure enough, a recent op-ed by the Chief White House ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush and the chief White House ethics lawyer for President Obama argued that “A Trump presidency would be ethically compromised” because of conflicts of interests like these.

The details of his conflicts remain a mystery. While every major party nominee in the last 40 years has released their tax returns, Trump has refused. Recently, Donald Trump, Jr., admitted the real reason Trump won’t release his tax returns is because it would “distract” from his message. Recently, GOP Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said Trump should release his tax returns as did GOP Chairman of the Government Oversight Committee Jason Chaffetz. In comparison, Hillary Clinton released her 2015 personal tax return – meaning all returns have been public back to 1977 – and Senator Tim Kaine and his wife Anne Holton released 10 years of their returns.

Here is a somewhat longer and more specific version.

The implications for foreign policy under a Trump administration are beyond disturbing.  In polar opposition to his slogans, Trump’s hidden deals threaten to put America last and diminish the United States as a world power.  Trump’s supporters may be in the mood for a strongman, but history teaches us that strongmen rarely give much of a damn for the populace except to the degree the people serve their purposes, and it is difficult to be a strongman when you are beholden to foreign powers and money.

Hillary for America Statement on Bombshell Report About Trump Aide’s Chilling Ties To Kremlin

Friday, HFA senior national spokesperson Glen Caplin released the following statement in response to the new bombshell report that Trump’s foreign policy adviser is being probed for suspected meetings with senior Russian officials:

“It’s chilling to learn that U.S. intelligence officials are conducting a probe into suspected meetings between Trump’s foreign policy adviser Carter Page and members of Putin’s inner circle while in Moscow. You have to ask why he would meet with Igor Diveykin, who is believed by U.S. officials ‘to have responsibility for intelligence collected by Russian agencies about the U.S. election.’ This comes as Russian hackers continue their attempts to influence the outcome of our elections, something Trump openly invited. This is serious business and voters deserve the facts before election day.

“Just one day after we learned about Trump’s hundreds of millions of dollars in undisclosed Russian business interests, this report suggests Page met with a sanctioned top Russian official to discuss the possibility of ending U.S. sanctions against Russia under a Trump presidency – an action that could directly enrich both Trump and Page while undermining American interests. This is precisely what more than fifty national security experts warned against when they called on Trump to disclose and divest his conflict-laden foreign assets that could endanger our national security.

“We’ve never seen anything like this in American politics. Every day seems to cast new doubts on what’s truly driving Donald Trump’s decision-making: the interests of the American people or his own bottom line. He needs to immediately disclose the full extent of his business relationships and foreign assets so the voters can make that determination for themselves.”

U.S. intel officials probe ties between Trump adviser and Kremlin

Yahoo News

By Michael Isikoff

September 23, 2016

U.S. intelligence officials are seeking to determine whether an American businessman identified by Donald Trump as one of his foreign policy advisers has opened up private communications with senior Russian officials — including talks about the possible lifting of economic sanctions if the Republican nominee becomes president, according to multiple sources who have been briefed on the issue.

The activities of Trump adviser Carter Page, who has extensive business interests in Russia, have been discussed with senior members of Congress during recent briefings about suspected efforts by Moscow to influence the presidential election, the sources said. After one of those briefings, Senate minority leader Harry Reid wrote FBI Director James Comey, citing reports of meetings between a Trump adviser (a reference to Page) and “high ranking sanctioned individuals” in Moscow over the summer as evidence of “significant and disturbing ties” between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin that needed to be investigated by the bureau.

Some of those briefed were “taken aback” when they learned about Page’s contacts in Moscow, viewing them as a possible back channel to the Russians that could undercut U.S. foreign policy, said a congressional source familiar with the briefings but who asked for anonymity due to the sensitivity of the subject. The source added that U.S. officials in the briefings indicated that intelligence reports about the adviser’s talks with senior Russian officials close to President Vladimir Putin were being “actively monitored and investigated.”

A senior U.S. law enforcement official did not dispute that characterization when asked for comment by Yahoo News. “It’s on our radar screen,” said the official about Page’s contacts with Russian officials. “It’s being looked at.”

Page is a former Merrill Lynch investment banker in Moscow who now runs a New York consulting firm, Global Energy Capital, located around the corner from Trump Tower, that specializes in oil and gas deals in Russia and other Central Asian countries. He declined repeated requests to comment for this story.

Trump first mentioned Page’s name when asked to identify his “foreign policy team” during an interview with the Washington Post editorial team last March. Describing him then only as a “PhD,” Trump named Page as among five advisers “that we are dealing with.” But his precise role in the campaign remains unclear; Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks last month called him an “informal foreign adviser” who “does not speak for Mr. Trump or the campaign.” Asked this week by Yahoo News, Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller said Page “has no role” and added: “We are not aware of any of his activities, past or present.” Miller did not respond when asked why Trump had previously described Page as one of his advisers.

The questions about Page come amid mounting concerns within the U.S. intelligence community about Russian cyberattacks on the Democratic National Committee and state election databases in Arizona and Illinois. In a rare public talk this week, former undersecretary of defense for intelligence Mike Vickers said that the Russian cyberattacks constituted meddling in the U.S. election and were “beyond the pale.” Also, this week, two senior Democrats — Sen. Dianne Feinstein, ranking minority member on the Senate Intelligence Committee, and Rep. Adam Schiff, ranking minority member on the House Intelligence Committee — released a joint statement that went further then what U.S. officials had publicly said about the matter.

“Based on briefings we have received, we have concluded that the Russian intelligence agencies are making a serious and concerted effort to influence the U.S. election,” they said. “At the least, this effort is intended to sow doubt about the security of our election and may well be intended to influence the outcomes of the election.” They added that “orders for the Russian intelligence agencies to conduct such actions could come only from very senior levels of the Russian government.”

Page came to the attention of officials at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow several years ago when he showed up in the Russian capital during several business trips and made provocative public comments critical of U.S. policy and sympathetic to Putin. “He was pretty much a brazen apologist for anything Moscow did,” said one U.S. official who served in Russia at the time.

He hasn’t been shy about expressing those views in the U.S. as well. Last March, shorty after he was named by Trump as one of his advisers, Page told Bloomberg News he had been an adviser to, and investor in, Gazprom, the Russian state-owned gas company. He then blamed Obama administration sanctions — imposed as a response to the Russian annexation of Crimea — for driving down the company’s stock. “So many people who I know and have worked with have been so adversely affected by the sanctions policy,” Page said in the interview. “There’s a lot of excitement in terms of the possibilities for creating a better situation.”

Page showed up again in Moscow in early July, just two weeks before the Republican National Convention formally nominated Trump for president, and once again criticized U.S. policy. Speaking at a commencement address for the New Economic School, an institution funded in part by major Russian oligarchs close to Putin, Page asserted that “Washington and other West capitals” had impeded progress in Russia “through their often hypocritical focus on ideas such as democratization, inequality, corruption and regime change.”

At the time, Page declined to say whether he was meeting with Russian officials during his trip, according to a Reuters report.

But U.S. officials have since received intelligence reports that during that same three-day trip, Page met with Igor Sechin, a longtime Putin associate and former Russian deputy prime minister who is now the executive chairman of Rosneft, Russian’s leading oil company, a well-placed Western intelligence source tells Yahoo News. That meeting, if confirmed, is viewed as especially problematic by U.S. officials because the Treasury Department in August 2014 named Sechin to a list of Russian officials and businessmen sanctioned over Russia’s “illegitimate and unlawful actions in the Ukraine.” (The Treasury announcement described Sechin as “utterly loyal to Vladimir Putin — a key component to his current standing.” At their alleged meeting, Sechin raised the issue of the lifting of sanctions with Page,” the Western intelligence source said.

U.S. intelligence agencies have also received reports that Page met with another top Putin aide while in Moscow — Igor Diveykin. A former Russian security official, Diveykin now serves as deputy chief for internal policy and is believed by U.S. officials to have responsibility for intelligence collected by Russian agencies about the U.S. election, the Western intelligence source said.

Yesterday morning, in the wake of the incident in Tulsa where Terence Crutcher was killed near his stalled SUV, Hillary said this in an interview with Steve Harvey.

And we’ve got to tackle systemic racism – this horrible shooting again. How many times do we have to see this in our country? In Tulsa, an unarmed man with his hands in the air? I mean, this is just unbearable, and it needs to be intolerable.

And so maybe I can, by speaking directly to white people, say, look, this is not who we are. We’ve got to do everything possible to improve policing, to go right at implicit bias. There are good, honorable, cool-headed police officers. We have seen them in action in New York over the last 48 hours because of the terrorist attacks. We can do better. We have got to rein in what is absolutely inexplicable. And we have got to have law enforcement respect communities and communities respect law enforcement because they have to work together.

Terence Crutcher was a dad of four whose car, an SUV kid-ferrying vehicle, broke down.  And now this … tonight.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A chaotic scene has erupted in the night in North Charlotte after an African-American man was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting.

Police say they were serving an outstanding warrant when they came upon Keith Lamont Scott in his car.  They say Scott got out, had a gun on him, and put the officers in imminent danger.  Officer Brentley Vinson shot Scott.

“Man was in his truck, reading a book waiting for his kid to come home,” said a man on scene.  “Cops shot him, for nothing.”

Emergency services were called to the scene where they transported Scott to Carolinas Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

This was the first thing I saw … on Twitter.  This is Charlotte – tonight.

Then this.

#KeithLamontScott is trending on Twitter right now as I type. No news organization covered this in the late evening news nor is any cable outlet there on the streets of Charlotte reporting. They are repeating earlier shows about the election and about the NY-NJ bomber. You can go through the Twitterfeed yourself and see what people are saying.  Keith Lamont Scott, a disabled dad, was sitting in his car reading a book – perceived (?)  to have been a gun (in an open carry state)  – who knows how – while waiting for his child’s school bus.

Meanwhile, on cable news, Donald Trump is saying African-American communities are in “the worst shape that they’ve ever been in before ever, ever, ever.”  Apparently he is so smart that he skipped the grades where they learned about slavery and Jim Crow. Surely, privileged as he is, he never rode in cars through the Jim Crow South as a kid.  I did. He never saw it first hand or drank from the wrong fountain.

We have a lot to talk about in this country. The news channels tonight should have been covering this story rather than Trump’s words. John King was on with Anderson Cooper talking about Charlotte and apparently was unaware of this upheaval in the streets of that city due to another killing.  How can that be for an organization that does nothing but news?

Finally! At 1:23 EDT CNN covers this. Not really – announces it.

Hillary Clinton is ready to talk about this.  Hillary, in fact is ready for anything, including Donald Trump and all of his threats against her and everyone else.

There are no magic wands and there is no “messiah” who is the only one who can simply say a magic word and stop terrorism or street violence whether it be police overreaction or gang related.  One candidate has plans and task forces in place to address these issues. She refuses to overpromise, but she promises to work hard on these issues and others for all of us.

Here is what the past four days demonstrate: Sometimes it is a really good thing that police have military-grade equipment – NY and NJ.  Without that gear, more bombs might have detonated and more people might have been hurt.  When those injuries happened, mysteriously, no one asked the races or religions of the victims.  We were just glad they were saved.  Other times, when people are angry and take to the streets, overuse of that equipment can exacerbate the situation.  Also, sometimes, it is hard to discern the good guys from the bad, but when the whole neighborhood is out – let’s assume they are not all the bad guys.  Let’s be careful in our assessments. Careful.  And let’s be careful when we vote.  Hillary got out in front of the issues here with plans that she made public and with expert teams.

Here is what we know about Hillary:  She will reach out to the Crutcher and Scott families. She will ask what she can do.

Let’s get a few things straight. First of all, Hillary has promised to protect the Second Amendment and has never so much as hinted that she had any intention of abolishing it.  Second, even if she had said anything like that the proper response is to encourage supporters to vote against her. To imply in any way that your political opponent should be harmed is outrageous and could not be more alien and unAmerican.  How much more of Trump’s outrageous rhetoric must we tolerate?  This goes beyond hate speech.  It is a threat.  It has no place in our electoral politics.

At a rally last night, Donald Trump hinted at Hillary Clinton’s assassination.

“I think her bodyguards should drop all weapons,” he said. “They should disarm immediately. Take their guns away, let’s see what happens to her.”

So far, the reaction has been pretty subdued — like we should just expect this from Trump.

Look, I get that it was Friday night.

But if Trump says something like this and we don’t react, we allow his brand of racist, authoritarian, corrupt politics to become somehow normal.

And we have to be better than that.

So here’s what I propose: Let’s use this moment to show that we’re standing with Hillary — and that we could not be more committed to beating Donald Trump on Election Day, at the ballot box.

Do something right now — donate.

Thank you,

Statement from Robby Mook On Trump’s Comments About Possible Violence Against Hillary Clinton

Robby Mook, campaign manager for Hillary for America, released the following statement Friday evening in response to Donald Trump’s comments referencing possible acts of violence against Hillary Clinton:

“Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for President, has a pattern of inciting people to violence. Whether this is done to provoke protesters at a rally or casually or even as a joke, it is an unacceptable quality in anyone seeking the job of Commander in Chief. This kind of talk should be out of bounds for a presidential candidate, just like it should be out of bounds for a presidential candidate to peddle a conspiracy theory about the President of the United States for five years. But we’ve seen again and again that no amount of failed resets can change who Donald Trump is.  He is unfit to be President and it is time Republican leaders stand up to denounce this disturbing behavior in their nominee.”

Birtherism is to Trump’s political rise what his loan from his father is to his business success. It is what made him. He can never deny it.

As his starter loan from good-old-dad was not his money, birther theory was not Donald Trump’s brain child.  He didn’t start the fire.  Those who were there at the creation will remember names of the motley crew of pioneers like Philip Berg, Mario Apuzzo, Charles Kerchner, Leo Donofrio, Jerome Corsi, Orly Taitz, and Reverend James Manning who developed the ready-made-for-Trump scenario.  WorldNetDaily regularly featured their myriad quests for the grail which was, variously, the birth certificate or some kind of court decision depending on the player.  Birtherism had a history and roots in “investigative” junkets and dead-end lawsuits long before Donald Trump co-opted the movement and made it his central campaign issue.

Today, Donald Trump tried to take a page from the great Gilda Radner’s character Emily Litella and say “Never mind!”  “You know all that crap I said about Barack Obama’s BC and transcripts?  Never mind!”  It was pretty pathetic.

What will it take to wake up the media to put the screws to Donald Trump?  This is not a normal election, and he is not a normal candidate.  This birther announcement today was yet another Trump distraction where he played the press.  They gathered like iron filings to a magnet today at his new D.C. hotel for what had been billed as a major press event, an event that consisted of a grand opening¹, much misplaced praise for The Donald, and one sentence supposedly intended to allay all doubts about where the sitting president was born.  The gall!

¹Grand opening of his own hotel! Guess who profited from this event, billed as a campaign event, being booked at a Trump hotel.  Yes, indeed. Trump invoiced his own campaign for the reservation and personally profited.

Hillary, of course, had a reaction which she voiced in her remarks at the Black Women’s Agenda Symposium.

Just yesterday, Trump again refused to say with his own words that the president was born in the United States. Donald’s advisors had the temerity to say, ‘He’s doing the country a ‘service’ by pushing these lies.’  No, he isn’t. He’s feeding into the worst impulses – the bigotry and bias – that lurks in our country.

Barack Obama was born in America, plain and simple.  And Donald Trump owes him and the American people an apology. So, my friends, there is no ‘new’ Donald Trump. There never will be. Donald Trump looks at President Obama after eight years as our president. He still doesn’t see him as an American.

Think of how dangerous that is. Imagine a person in the Oval Office who traffics in conspiracy theories and refuses to let them go – no matter what the facts are. Imagine someone who distorts the truth to fit a very narrow view of the world. Imagine a president who sees someone who doesn’t look like him, and doesn’t agree with him, and thinks, ‘That person must not be a real American.’

Donald Trump is unfit to be President of the United States. We cannot become insensitive to what he says and what he stirs up. We can’t just accept this. We’ve got to stand up to it. If we don’t, it won’t stop.

Further:

Trump has spent years peddling a racist conspiracy aimed at undermining the first African American president. He can’t just take it back.

The birther lie is what turned Trump from an ordinary reality TV star into a political figure. That origin story can’t be unwritten.

Hillary for America issued a statement.

HFA Statement on Donald Trump’s Press Event

After Donald Trump’s press event today, Hillary for America Campaign Manager Robby Mook released the following statement:

“Trump’s actions today were disgraceful. After five years of pushing a racist conspiracy theory into the mainstream, it was ap the palling to watch Trump appoint himself the judge of whether the President of the United States is American. This sickening display shows more than ever why Donald Trump is totally unfit be president.”

Trump’s real agenda today was to divert attention from the empty page that is his arsenal of qualifications starting with his tax returns and any assurance that he will build a wall between himself and his for-profit organization with a complex network of foreign ties should he be elected.  Let’s be clear: he should not be.  This was no come-to-Jesus moment today.  We can hope it, finally, humiliated the press into shattering his charade.

Looks like Hillary took advantage of the article to do some debate prep!

Here is another reaction to the article from Hillary’s website.

5 disturbing ways Donald Trump’s business dealings would jeopardize U.S. national security

This all demonstrates a quality of Hillary’s that we admire and love.  She is assiduous. She perseveres.  She persists.  She is relentless.  It is awesome to behold! You give her a piece of information like Eichenwald’s exhaustively researched, dense article, and she does not simply digest it, as many of us did yesterday, she employs it.  She manipulates the material. She turns it into a tool, reorganizes the information, and reworks it into something of her own – a most effective study technique.  She might have been sick at home, but she sure used her time efficiently to sharpen up her debate darts. Way to go, Hillary!
