Remarks For The “Highlighting Solutions To Stop Violence” Against Women Policy Dialogue

Press Statement

Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
November 5, 2011

Good morning! I’m delighted to send greetings to each of you as you come together to develop new ways to empower women. I also want to thank my good friend, Minister Kevin Rudd, and the Australian Government for hosting this important forum.

Study after study shows that gender equality is crucial to the economic and political stability of countries around the world. When women are able to participate in the political process and enter the labor force, economies grow faster, children are healthier, and there is less corruption. Entire societies flourish. So elevating women is not only the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do.

Violence against women is one of the biggest obstacles to empowering women. That’s why I am so pleased that the Pacific Women’s Empowerment Initiative, which I announced with Minister Rudd last year, is coming together once again to enlist new partners and develop new ideas in this effort. You are helping to improve policies, initiate new programs, and establish new resources for the empowerment of women and girls in the Pacific region.

I hope this dialogue gives you an opportunity to discuss what works, what doesn’t, and how we can build upon successful policies and programs to advance women’s rights. And I hope your discussions yield concrete results, because this is a crucial issue for the Pacific region and the world. And I can’t wait to hear about the next steps. Thank you.

I want to thank my Facebook friend Allyn Horne for sharing this article dedicated to the late, beloved Dorothy Rodham.   I do not agree with everything  Budowsky says,  but I do agree with his eloquent conclusion.

While the GOP front-runner battles multiple accusations of sexual harassment (which he brushes off, as some men will,   as nothing offensive … in his eyes),   Budowsky  emphasizes our Hillary’s dedication to the proposition that no society can prosper by subjugating half the populace.

I also want to thank our resident hunter-gatherer of articles, Jen, who found the picture of Hillary (with our Dorothy) wearing a Yankees cap in 1992.    I would remind David Cone who supported Guilani over Hillary for the Senate in 2004 that she was no johnny-come-lately fan, obviously, and not seeing  her in the stands (as Guiliani always was) does not imply that she was not a fan.  She was a senator – busy working for the people of New York.  Just sayin’!

Hillary wins big in 2012

By Brent Budowsky – 11/02/11 06:27 PM ET
This column is dedicated to the late Dorothy Rodham, a very proud mom and grandma who did good in the world.
SNIP

I have written before, and will write again, that a tidal wave of support from female voters will be a powerful factor helping the president and Democrats in 2012.

This “woman power” that benefits Hillary Clinton with women now benefits her with many men as well. In an economy where many view the 1 percent as unfairly gaining at the expense of the other 99 percent, Hillary Clinton is seen as a fighter. She never gives up. She is a voice for those who feel disempowered, including white male blue-collar workers, blacks who feel trapped in joblessness and injustice, Hispanics who are told their dreams can no longer come true and seniors who trust Hillary Clinton as their protector.

He concludes with a metaphor so powerful, seductive, and effective that I would like to covert it to some fancy script font, print it on parchment paper, and frame it in federalist blue-and-gold frame.

In the eyes of voters, Hillary Clinton is the North Star of an America where Democrats act like Democrats and where every woman deserves equal pay, every worker deserves a job and nobody should be left behind.

The great source of Clinton’s strength is that the dreams of women are the dreams for all. Dorothy Rodham was one great mom who raised one great daughter. If Democrats remember why, they will do just fine in 2012.

Budowsky was an aide to former Sen. Lloyd Bentsen (D-Texas) and former Rep. Bill Alexander (D-Tenn.), then chief deputy majority whip of the House. He holds an LL.M. in international financial law from the London School of Economics. He can be read on The Hill’s Pundits Blog and reached at brentbbi@webtv.net.

We love you, Hillary, and carry you and your grief in our heavy hearts.  This article was rightly dedicated to the great lady who bore you, raised you, and gave you to us – a gift we will cherish, protect, and defend  as along as you and we live.  (I hope that does not sound too soppy – but I tend to get a little soppy about our dear departed Dorothy.)

Mme. Secretary, fresh from a trip that included stops in Libya, Afghanistan, and Pakistan,  testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee this week in her signature elegant, informed, and informative fashion.  That testimony could have received better press coverage from my POV.  What did get everyone’s attention was the Time Magazine (where she is this week’s beautiful cover girl) poll pitting her and Obama against the GOP candidates showing that she would trounce all comers.

Hillary Clinton and the Limits of Power

By Massimo Calabresi | October 27, 2011

… we polled her against Romney and Perry, and found that she does better, by far, than Obama, leading Romney by 17 points and Perry by 26*. Her closest aides strongly dismiss any 2012 ambitions and say 2016 is very unlikely: she’d be 69 the day of the vote that year. We don’t speculate on the source of her popularity.

New York, New York!!!! The Daily News picked up on this a couple of times. Here is the original article.

Hillary 2012? Better bet than Obama, some say

By Nia-Malika Henderson

Let the Hillary Clinton 2012 chatter begin in earnest. A new poll out by Time magazine showed that the secretary of state would trounce any of the top contenders in the GOP field.

Third Party Group Mulls Hillary as Presidential Candidate

… Americans Elect is a collection of Republicans, Democrats and independents who say they are disgusted by the polarization that has poisoned American politics, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The group is collecting signatures to put itself on the ballot in every state, and claims it has collected 1.6 million signatures in California.

Among the figures frequently mentioned as a possible Americans Elect candidate are New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer, former Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh, and Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz. The group could reportedly seek to draft Hillary Clinton.
