It began with this.

WE STAND WITH DONNA!

Donna Brazile is an amazing woman and strong Democrat who has fought tirelessly to protect our voting rights, provided a voice for the voiceless and championed issues like increasing the min wage and equal pay for women. We stand with Donna, because Donna stands and has always stood with US! Looking forward to her continued service on the DNC as she consistently puts people first!

I received it in Mark Murphy’s name.  Mark is my friend. The message was that elements were trying to push Donna Brazile out of the Democratic Party. That didn’t seem fair, so I signed.

Then came an email request from Donna to donate to the party. So I did. In support.

Today’s breaking news, starting with an excerpt in Politico and followed by stories in several major publications  including The Daily Beast, The New York Post, and Newsweek to name a few, that Donna Brazile has a book out in which she supposedly describes how Hillary Clinton “took over” the Democratic Party (CNN is using the verb “hijacked”) came as a shock.

I will not link to any of the articles. What I can tell you is that DB is trending on Twitter and a good deal of of the comments are calling her out for her lies and her self-promotion. Here are a few examples, but you should go look for yourself. Some retweeting wouldn’t hurt while you’re there.

On Facebook, all my PUMA friends suddenly came roaring through!

After Hillary accepted Secretary of State, I purged most of the PUMA posts here although I have occasionally referred to our angry coalition. I didn’t want to affect opinions of Hillary’s work.

But now the game has changed. We thought, in supporting DB these past few weeks, that we were supporting the traditional Dem Party. Now it appears that Donna has tossed her support toward Bernie, who remains an Independent, and his “revolution” that wants to drive the party far to the left.

It all smells like political treachery, self-promotion, and week-old jambalaya. We are not having it!

Hillary Clinton: The Guardian person of the year 2016

Love trumps hate. Good trumps evil. Light trumps darkness. Knowledge trumps ignorance. And hope will always trump despair. When Donald J Trump, the narcissistic real estate businessman, beat Hillary Rodham Clinton, former first lady and secretary of state to the presidency of the United States of America in the 2016 elections, a lie was practically put to almost all of those assertions.

With uncommon dignity, she ran a campaign of ideas for the future. But her opponent was and is a misogynist, a demagogue whose own ideas, to the extent that he had any, were warped, racist and downright insulting of our collective humanity. The appeal of Trump’s campaign to the American electorate is still a phenomenon under scrutiny but it is enough to say he found listening ears in a people who, in despair, chose to accept his retail of fear instead of Clinton’s message of hope. So, Trump trumps Clinton. But America is the loser. She lost to a man whose definition of the truth is its exact opposite, one whose skyscraper of empty promises on the way to that electoral victory dwarfed the flagship of his real estate holding. Dear Hillary Clinton,

Happy New Year!  People are saying 2016 was a terrible year, and in a lot of ways it was.  It was a heartcrusher on many fronts. But it was also a year when you showed us the best of your heart and mind in your campaign. You made us proud and joyful.  As hurtful and confusing as the loss was, we cannot forget the moments.

There were wonderful moments in 2016.   You accomplished a great deal.  You drew together a base even larger than you had in the 2008 primaries. You put forth excellent and workable proposals to address the concerns you heard from Americans everywhere. You stood before us day after day and explained the problems and the solutions you proposed. You campaigned tirelessly and selflessly.

For that and for your unwavering good cheer and optimism, we thank you for this past year. 2016 was not all bad.  How the election came out was bad and wrong.  But you, Hillary, and your courage, were the gold nugget in the muddy river that was 2016.

Our hearts were not the same after 2008 and will never be the same again after 2016.  There are scars and yours are certainly deeper than ours.  But you have taught us time and again how to rise after defeat and march on.

There are theories galore about why we did not succeed.  There is evidence that it may have been, at least to some extent, influenced by powers outside our control.  We are headed into a bleak period where the path ahead appears dim, grim, and rocky indeed.

You brought us a lot of joy, cheer, and hope in 2016, and for that, we will not write this year off as a grimy mess.  Your ideas sparked fires,  lit candles, and glowed amid the darkness of exclusion and derision from the other side.

Thank you for that.  Thank you for making history!  Thank you for being the best ever we could have elected.  Thank you for being the best ever the American people actually chose.

We will never forget this year.  We will never forget this loss.  But we also hope we will never forget how you campaigned, head high, confident, prepared, assured of your positions and your moral stance.  You did it all with a smile.  You were right.

We were with you then, and we still are.  Just call on us. We are here and always will be.  Happy New Year, and thank you for all you do!

With love and appreciation,

Your team at Still 4 Hill

Here is a random selection of some emblematic images of 2016.  In some ways, it was a glorious year because you made it so.  We’d never had a candidate quite like you – so brilliant, beautiful, fun-loving, a natural with babies and kids. What’s not to love about this part of 2016?

Thank you for the hope, the joy, and the heart. We will go on. Your are, as Marian Wright Edelman said, “The People’s President.”

Happy New Year to the whole Still 4 Hill community!  It won’t be pleasant or easy, but we can make 2016 count and 2017 answer.

The 71st Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, held at the Waldorf Astoria, is an annual fundraiser benefiting Catholic Charities.  It is sponsored by the foundation and hosted by the Archbishop of New York.  This year’s host was Timothy Cardinal Dolan.

Al Smith was a four-term New York governor and the first Catholic candidate for president. Every four years, this hot ticket dinner is the last venue for presidential candidates to share space, rub elbows with influential New York leaders, and exchange good-natured barbs.  Candidates do not always attend, but this year – this very contentious year – they both did.

Here are both speeches.  Donald “won the coin toss” and spoke first.  Many of his comments were downright bad hombre nasty.  Only Hillary referred to Pope Francis. She retweets him often. @Pontifex.

If you only want to see Hillary, this is her speech.

Trump referred to the Cardinal’s “property” on 5th Avenue.  My great-grandfather supplied the granite for St. Patrick’s from his Westchester quarry.  Instead of poking fun at himself (the tradition) Trump poked fun at his wife for her purloined, plagiarized speech.

Here are some pics from the event.

Watching this debate, I kept thinking that this one was more like a presidential debate than any of the previous ones.  Chris Wallace did the best job of moderating:  keeping the audience and the participants in adherence to the rules and moving to the topics he had chosen.  In some cases I wished he had not been so strict, but, in the end, he was fair.

It was more like a first debate should have been rather than a last.

So there I was thinking the last shall be first.  Where does that come from?  I finally had a chance to visit the rest room and was thinking Matthew.  Well holy moly!!!  Look!

Matthew 20:16King James Version (KJV)

16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

Seriously!  It IS Matthew 2016.

The last debate was more like a first debate, and that says something about this entire contest. This last one is really the first chance we have had to hear anything much from Trump on issues.

The first question was about SCOTUS appointments.  Not 30 seconds into the debate Donald said he was not going to appoint any nasty women who hate him like the Notorious Ruth Bader Ginsberg.  It did not go better for him from there. I do not know why anyone was saying the first 11 or 25 minutes he was in control.  Seriously? He was off on his me-me-me-me-me within the first minute!
