Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton kicked off her book tour this week, stopping in Chicago Wednesday, June 11 for a Chicago Ideas Conversation with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel at the Harris Theater.

“This stage is normally graced with ballet dancers,” Emanuel said to Clinton, “but it has never been graced like this moment.”

Marking the first public speech on her tour for her memoir Hard Choices, the 9 a.m. conversation was a homecoming for the Chicago-born politician, who referred to the city as the “real core of [her] family—who we are and where we come from.”

After introductions from Chicago co-Founder Brad Keywell and Emanuel, Clinton took the stage to a standing ovation. In her remarks, she reminisced on her childhood in Chicago and discussed the motivations behind her latest book. “I thought it was important to try to memorialize what those four years were like,” she explained, before noting that “some world leaders might not be happy when they read my book.”

“I’m talking to you, Vladimir,” she quipped.
