President Clinton, Former Secretary Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton Unveil New Commitments to Action on Second Day of 2013 Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting

Commitments announced today focus on women’s empowerment, mobilizing youth, conserving natural resources, and building resilient cities

NEW YORK, NY – Today, during the second day of the 2013 Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting, President Bill Clinton, Former Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Clinton Foundation Vice Chair Chelsea Clinton announced new Commitments to Action that will address pressing global challenges. Advancing Progress: Investing in Healthy and Educated Girls and Women

Session Features:  Filmed for Broadcast  •   Panel

When girls and women are healthy, educated, and fully integrated into their societies and economies, their countries flourish. Yet today, women are still twice as likely as men to be illiterate, gender-based violence remains persistent and widespread, and approximately 800 women worldwide die daily from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. Targeted investments focused on expanding access to high-quality health care and education for girls and women can work to overcome these continued challenges, resulting in longer life expectancies, increased economic participation, and fuller social and political agency.

This session will highlight specific approaches that enable girls and women worldwide to learn, earn, thrive, and control their own destinies — and will explore critical considerations for achieving the next generation of global developments objectives.

New York, NY – Today, President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton opened the ninth Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting organized around the theme “Mobilizing for Impact.” Over the course of three days, more than 1,000 international leaders and innovators will convene to explore how cross-sector partnerships can create sustainable improvements in living conditions for people worldwide. Today, speakers discussed how philanthropic and public funds are still essential to fully resolve issues that cannot be addressed by markets alone.

“As CGI’s ninth Annual Meeting begins, I am once again profoundly impressed by the dynamic group of leaders from around the world who chose to be here today,” said Chelsea Clinton. “The dedication and passion of CGI members from the public, private and non-sectors alike remind us that, when it comes to addressing global challenges, we are all in this together. In the next three days, I look forward to learning more about how the commitments made in years past are having an impact and seeing how the partnerships forged this year at CGI will attack some of the world’s most pressing problems.”

This conversation between two presidents was announced a few days ago.  Clearly it is part of President Obama’s campaign to explain the Affordable Care Act.  The news that broke this morning via Kate Bolduan on CNN was that Hillary might drop in for this conversation.  She did not cite any sources or elaborate, but I would not want to miss that!  Would you?

Healthier Futures: Prioritizing Prevention

The rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is one of the greatest threats to global health and economic development in the 21st century, accounting for 63 percent of global deaths. The leading risk factors — tobacco use, unhealthy diets, and physical inactivity — play a major role in the cause of high-burden NCDs such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer.

In this session, key leaders from across sectors will share HOW members can:

• position prevention, with an emphasis on risk factors, at the center of the health debate
• invest in more economical measures to address NCDs — such as early testing and diagnosis — rather than costly treatment
• leverage new insights from the field of behavioral economics to incentivize change at home and in the workplace

President Obama and President Clinton will engage in a conversation about the benefits and future of health care reform in America and access to quality health care around the globe.

The 2013 Annual Meeting will be structured around a single theme: Mobilizing for Impact. This theme explores ways the CGI members and member organizations can be more effective in leveraging individuals, partner organizations, and key resources in their commitment efforts. Mobilizing the right entities – and allowing them to reach their full potential – creates lasting and scalable success. This builds on CGI’s 2012 theme, Designing for Impact, which encouraged the design of purposeful commitments from the outset.

The Clinton Foundation has shared four ways in which you can participate in the conversation.

Hillary’s much-anticipated first print interview since leaving the State Department hit the stands today amid the usual 2016 speculation and gossip further stimulated by Bill Clinton’s appearance on GPS with Fareed Zakaria.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

While pundits busily speed-dial their individual Hillaryland insiders, we do best to bear in mind that these interviews, his and hers, coincide with the kick-off this week of the Clinton Global Initiative in New York and have much more to do with that and Hillary’s new job, projects and efforts than with 2016.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Here is a bit of the article, but, like me, you are probably going to want your own souvenir hard copy.

Hillary in Midair

She’s learned from her mistakes. Three years before November 8, 2016, she’s working hard to be relaxed, calm, easy. But, all the while, the old Clinton gears are whirring.

For four years, Hillary Rodham Clinton flew around the world as President Barack Obama’s secretary of State, while her husband, the former president Bill Clinton, lived a parallel life of speeches and conferences in other hemispheres. They communicated almost entirely by phone. They were seldom on the same continent, let alone in the same house.

But this year, all that has changed: For the first time in decades, neither one is in elected office, or running for one. Both are working in the family business, in the newly renamed nonprofit that once bore only Bill’s name but is now called the Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton Foundation, which will hold its annual conference in New York next week.

“We get to be at home together a lot more now than we used to in the last few years,” says Hillary Clinton. “We have a great time; we laugh at our dogs; we watch stupid movies; we take long walks; we go for a swim.

“You know,” she says, “just ordinary, everyday pleasures.”

In the world of the Clintons, of course, what constitutes ordinary and everyday has never been either. So the question was inevitable: Given who he is, and who she is, does Bill, among their guffaws over the dogs and stupid movies, harangue her daily about running for president?

To this, Hillary Rodham Clinton lets loose one of her loud, head-tilted-back laughs. “I don’t think even he is, you know, focused on that right now,” she says. “Right now, we’re trying to just have the best time we can have doin’ what we’re doin’. ”

Both Bill and Hillary Clinton are talking to the media, but before everyone jumps to 2016 conclusions,  let’s understand that we are likely to be seeing Clintons on the horizon with some frequency over the upcoming week as they host heavy hitters from all over the globe at the 2013 Clinton Global InitiativeLive feeds will be streamed here.

This will be the first year that Hillary will be able to participate fully since accepting the post of Secretary of State.   Over the past four years she did make time to address participants but was otherwise occupied during the week representing all of us at the U.N. General Assembly.  She will not be subject to that obligation this year,  and we can all be assured that both her husband and her daughter will be thrilled to have her aboard for the long run this time around.

For starters, we can look forward, on Sunday, to seeing former President Clinton (and informal Obama Administration “Secretary of Explaining Stuff”) with Fareed Zakaria on CNN’s GPS discussing the  Syrian weapons deal.  Most assuredly he will be granting other interviews in the course of the week likely on morning and evening news broadcasts.

Meanwhile,  Hillary’s first interview with the print media since leaving the State Department will be available when New York Magazine hits the stands on Monday coinciding with the opening of CGI according to Politico.

After an eight-month hiatus, Hillary Clinton is talking to the media again.

Earlier this month, the former Secretary of State and likely 2016 presidential candidate sat down with New York Magazine’s Joe Hagan for her first major interview since leaving the State Department on Feb. 1, POLITICO has learned.

The interview is expected to be published in print and online on Monday, the first day of the annual Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York. All three Clintons — Hillary, former President Bill, and daughter Chelsea — are featured speakers at the event.

A Clinton spokesperson declined to comment on the interview; Hagan did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

We know that Mme. Secretary has been working assiduously out of camera range getting her own initiative, Too Small to Fail, organized and off the ground.  A joint effort between the Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton Foundation and Next Generation Too Small to Fail is dedicated to the health and well being of children aged 0-5.   Yesterday, the foundation announced the formation of leadership and advisory councils for the initiative, and we can be sure that Hillary and her team will be diving into their projects over the coming week.

Even when she is not in front of the camera lenses,  our Hillary seems to be in the news and on our screens with great regularity due to all the 2016 speculation, but it will be wonderful to see her addressing and explaining her new endeavors.  She, as we all know, is an excellent “explainer” herself!

Too Small to Fail Announces Formation of Advisory and Leadership Councils

Sep 17, 2013 | Clinton Foundation | New York, New York  | Press Release

Hillary Rodham Clinton convenes expert group of advisors to set course of action for improving the health and well-being of children ages zero to five

Washington DC—National early childhood development experts, business leaders, community advocates and political leaders will join Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and longtime child advocate James Steyer today for the inaugural meeting of the Too Small to Fail Advisory and Leadership Councils. Too Small to Fail is a joint initiative of Next Generation and The Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation. The goal of Too Small to Fail is to help parents, caregivers, communities and businesses take meaningful, evidence-based actions that will improve the health and well-being of America’s youngest children, ages zero to five, and prepare them to succeed in the 21st century.

The new advisory and leadership council members, who bring years of experience across academic disciplines and sectors, will serve as expert advisors, spokespeople, and leaders for Too Small to Fail, helping to promote a national discussion to advance understanding of the science of early childhood development among parents and other communities.

Additionally, the council members will advise Too Small to Fail in the development of a public education campaign focused on encouraging parents and caregivers to take simple actions that will improve learning and health for young children, and on securing business commitments to improve conditions for families.

“At the Clinton Foundation we’re focused on empowering people to live better lives. New scientific research is helping us understand the building blocks that children need to get the best start in life,” said Secretary Clinton. “Along with Next Generation, we want to make sure that we get that information out to the largest number of parents possible. So I am grateful to all the experts in early learning, childhood development, business, and family policy who have joined Too Small to Fail. Together, we’ll give parents and children what they need to succeed.”

“I am really excited to work so closely with a group of experts who really care about our children, and who want to share their time and expertise with Too Small to Fail,” said James Steyer, chair of the Board and co-founder of Next Generation. “We need real solutions to the problems affecting children now, and this group will help take this conversation to boardrooms and family rooms across the country.”

President Clinton Announces Record Results at 2013 Clinton Global Initiative America Meeting

President Bill Clinton and NJ Governor Chris Christie Conclude the Meeting with a One-on-One Conversation

2014 CGI America meeting to convene in Denver, Colorado

CHICAGO – This year, CGI America attendees developed 74 new commitments valued at more than $1.6 billion, which aim to positively impact the lives of more than 2 million people in the United States. The two-day gathering attracted nearly 1,000 leaders of government, business, philanthropy, and NGOs dedicated to improving the nation’s long-term competitiveness. President Bill Clinton, Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton announced that, after three years in Chicago, the next CGI America meeting will convene in Denver in 2014. President Clinton and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie closed the meeting with a conversation on leadership, cooperation, and collaboration.

“Over the past few days, I’ve seen new partnerships formed and meaningful commitments made that will make a difference in the lives of more than 2 million people,” said President Clinton. “Thanks to these commitments, more than $1.4 billion of new capital will be invested in or loaned to small- and medium-sized enterprises, more than a quarter million people will have improved access to STEM education, and more than 1.2 million tons of greenhouse gasses will be avoided. The work of these dedicated leaders is a great example of what’s working and why collaboration is crucial for lasting success.”

“Over the years, there have been 2,600 concrete Commitments to Action at CGI,” said Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. “I traveled the world quite extensively, the last four years. One of the lessons I took away is that this model of partnerships and commitments is at the heart of what we need to do to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century.”

“CGI America participants have raised the bar by developing a record number of commitments before the meeting began, in addition to creating 50 other commitments and tangible action plans here on-site,” said Chelsea Clinton. “Over the past two days, the collective dedication to creating the sorts of opportunities everyone in America deserves and our future needs is truly inspiring.”

Throughout the meeting, attendees generated Commitments to Action: new, specific, and measurable plans to address an economic challenge facing the United States. Some of the commitments announced today will help expand America’s advanced manufacturing sector, make Tennessee the first state to provide comprehensive transition services for all youth who “age out” of foster care, and launch an $11 million fund for healthy food enterprises in rural and urban communities.

When fully funded and implemented, these new CGI America commitments will ensure that:

  • More than 10,000 jobs will be created or filled. Among these, nearly 1,500 are specifically indicated as clean/green jobs.
  • More than $1.4 billion of new capital will be invested in or loaned to small- and medium-sized enterprises.
  • More than 4,500 small- or medium-sized enterprises will receive non-monetary support, such as assistance developing business plans and pro bono consulting, technical training, and access to new markets.
  • More than 250,000 people will have improved access to capital and financial services.
  • More than 212,000 students will gain access to STEM education opportunities.
  • More than 10,000 youth will gain access to mentoring.
  • More than 10,000 teachers will be trained or gain new skills.
  • More than $190 million of new capital will be invested in green initiatives.
  • More than 1.2 million tons of greenhouse gasses will be avoided, mostly through building retrofits and energy efficiency efforts.

Bloomberg anchor Trish Regan hosted discussions for broadcast on Bloomberg TV on America’s energy security and getting capital off the sidelines, featuring Ellen Kullman, chair of the board and CEO of Dupont; Jim Rogers, chairman, president, and CEO of Duke Energy Corporation; Wesley Clark, chairman and CEO of Wesley K. Clark & Associates; Gary D. Cohn, president and COO of The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.; Mark Cuban, entrepreneur; and Valerie Jarrett, senior advisor to the president, the White House.

In a session moderated by Ali Velshi, business anchor of Al Jazeera America, Houston Mayor Annise Parker, Jessica Jackley, venture partner at the Collaborative Fund, and Bill Simon, president and CEO of Walmart U.S., discussed what collaborations are required to ensure the country’s global competitiveness in the twentieth century.

When the data is received by Kids Read Now, the next book will be mailed. If the student continues to read every week, he or she can earn all nine books on their list. Students will be tested as they exit school in the spring and again as they enter school in the fall to measure summer learning loss. The short-term goal is for all children participating in the Kids Read Now program to enter the school year reading at grade level. 4th Meeting of CGI America will bring leaders from business, government, NGOs, and foundations together in Denver to develop solutions to major social, economic, and environmental challenges in the United States

New York – President Bill Clinton, Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chelsea Clinton announced today that the Clinton Global Initiative will hold its fourth CGI America meeting in June 2014 in Denver, Colorado.

“When we began CGI America, I imagined it as an initiative that could travel across the country to highlight the importance of working collectively to meet our common challenges on domestic issues that affect us all,” said President Clinton. “I’m grateful to Chicago for getting us started and know that Denver is the right place to continue our work. Last year alone, Denver added 12,250 new jobs, 15,000 new residents, and 1,000 new businesses and is home to one of the most vibrant communities of NGOs.”

“Colorado’s commitment to healthy communities, culture and the environment makes our state the perfect host for CGI America,” Gov. Hickenlooper said. “We believe our Western venue will attract the world’s foremost leaders to share new ideas and tackle some of the most pressing global issues.”

“Denver could not be more proud to host this conference that harnesses innovation in local government, identifies real-time solutions to fight back from the Great Recession, and helps cities succeed in the global marketplace,” Mayor Hancock said. “Denver has a strong entrepreneurial spirit paired with a sincere dedication to collaboration that creates a solid foundation to support CGI’s goals of promoting economic recovery in the U.S.”

Local civic leaders, Steve Farber and Steve Bachar, who joined President Clinton, Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chelsea Clinton on stage, have mobilized a group of Denver-based organizations to help bring the meeting to the Mile High City next year, also welcome CGI to this thriving city where communities work collaboratively to tackle their toughest challenges.
