Hillary Clinton Monday urged her supporters to vote for a number of Democratic gubernatorial candidates campaigning in states currently run by Republican governors.
In her announcement, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee touted the importance of securing offices at the state level during this year’s midterms and highlighted five gubernatorial contenders she’s backing.
“Governors set the tone and direction for their states,” Clinton tweeted. “They’re also our last line of defense against some of the Trump administration’s worst policies.”
As early voting locations open across the country, Onward Together announces Secretary Clinton’s endorsement of 19 state and local candidates in the Run for Something program.
These candidates were selected for their inspiring commitments to improving their communities and bringing diversity and compassion to local office. Collectively, they have knocked on hundreds of thousands of doors and connected with voters who share our progressive values.
“Our candidates represent the change our country needs right now — thoughtful, compassionate, community-based leadership,” said Amanda Litman, co founder of Run for Something. “Their stories serve as inspiration for all of us to get out and make a difference.
A few weeks ago, I spent a little time at my favorite off-off-Broadway performance: my granddaughter Charlotte’s annual spring dance recital.
Watching her wave and spin among her friends, I felt so grateful to be a part of her big day. I can’t say that I’m completely free from the frustration and sadness I felt after the 2016 election, but spending time with family never fails to give me hope.
The same can be said for the time I’ve spent lately with some incredible leaders, from the group of women journalists I met in DC last month who have risked their lives to report on human rights violations in Georgia, corruption in China, and more, to the the artists, authors, and thinkers at the PEN World Voices festival who are fighting to defend free expression and freedom of the press — around the world and right here at home.
And of course, I’m always inspired by the incredible organizations that Onward Together partners with. On Monday, we held our first-ever Onward Together convening, where the organizers and activists behind these groups and I had the chance to make plans for the next few months and beyond. I was so glad to see all of them, including the team at Voto Latino, who are behind some of the most thoughtful organizing of the last few years. Take a moment to learn a little more about them, and then head back out into the fight re-energized and ready to win.

The mission: To build a stronger and more inclusive democracy by providing culturally relevant programs that engage, educate, and empower Latinos to shake up politics.
The story: Voto Latino began as a PSA-based project in 2004 and evolved into a pioneering civic media organization that shakes up the political process by engaging the fastest growing, second largest group of citizens — American Latinos. In the last 14 years, they’ve built a dedicated social media following that reaches over 10 million people weekly and cultivated a strong base of support from cross-industry arts, media, and pop culture influencers. Through three core competencies — issue advocacy, leadership development, and civic engagement — they have registered more than half a million voters, co-founded National Voter Registration Day, and can run and scale digital programs aimed at Latinos in all 50 states through tested social platforms, partnerships, and strategic digital targeting.
The latest: Voto Latino is launching a massive nationwide voter registration and civic engagement campaign leading up to the 2018 elections and 2020 census, including a strong digital campaign and a new version of VoterPal, the first-of-a-kind peer-to-peer voter registration app that promises to disrupt how we engage new voters. Voto Latino deeply believes that it’s time to go back to basics. By May, they will have trained over 300 new organizers in California’s Central Valley alone. Look out for them in eight states this summer, in addition to Los Dells, the nation’s premier Latin American music festival over Labor Day, where Voto Latino will be the official voter registration partner.

Friend –Like many of you, I’ve been reading a lot of news since the election. And some of the smartest, most enjoyable reading I’ve done has come from women who write about politics, culture, and the world around us.These women haven’t let the frustrations and disappointment of the last year knock them down. They’re leading new discussions about the fights ahead of us and need for passionate activism. They’re starting new chapters of their lives — getting married, raising their children. And they’re finding new ways to change our world for the better.
I hope you’ll take a moment to read more below about the work that another group Onward Together has endorsed, Emerge America, is doing to increase the number of women in public office. Over and over again, I’ve heard from young women running for office that Emerge gave them the tools they needed to get started. I’m grateful for that. Our communities — from our families and workplaces to our neighborhoods and states — are smarter and stronger when women have an equal seat at the table.
And to any women reading this, I hope you’ll consider taking a chance on running for office. Being your champion was the honor of a lifetime — now it’s my turn to be on your team.

The mission: To increase the number of Democratic women leaders from diverse backgrounds in public office by recruiting, training and providing a powerful network. The vision: To change the face of power, politics, and leadership in this country in order to have policies that are responsive to all Americans.
The story: Struck by the incredible lack of women holding elected office at the local level in San Francisco, Andrea co-founded Emerge California in 2002 to lead the fight to get more women elected to office in Northern California. Emerge California’s top notch training program quickly became successful. So in 2005, Andrea founded Emerge America to replicate the model in all 50 states. Emerge America currently has affiliates with staff on the ground in 22 states with plans to expand across the country.
The latest: On Election Day in November 2016, 150 of the 214 Emerge America alumnae on the ballot won their races–a 70% win-rate. Since then, the number of women applying to Emerge America’s training programs has increased by more than 85%, with no signs of slowing down. In 2017, Emerge America alumnae have won 88 out of 117 races – that is a 75% win rate. Emerge is not waiting until 2018 to win elections.
The next step: Already, 309 Emerge America alumnae have stepped forward to run in 2017 and 2018. Next month, 18 Emerge Virginia-trained women will be on the ballot for the Virginia House of Delegates. Visit emergeamerica.org to learn more.

On November 8th, barring some astonishment, the people of the United States will, after two hundred and forty years, send a woman to the White House. The election of Hillary Clinton is an event that we will welcome for its immense historical importance, and greet with indescribable relief. It will be especially gratifying to have a woman as commander-in-chief after such a sickeningly sexist and racist campaign, one that exposed so starkly how far our society has to go. The vileness of her opponent’s rhetoric and his record has been so widely aired that we can only hope she will be able to use her office and her impressive resolve to battle prejudice wherever it may be found.
On every issue of consequence, including economic policy, the environment, and foreign affairs, Hillary Clinton is a distinctly capable candidate: experienced, serious, schooled, resilient. When the race began, Clinton, who has always been a better office-holder than a campaigner, might have anticipated a clash of ideas and personalities on the conventional scale, against, say, Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio. Instead, the Democratic nominee has ended up playing a sometimes secondary role in a squalid American epic. If she is elected, she will have weathered a prolonged battle against a trash-talking, burn-it-to-the-ground demagogue. Unfortunately, the drama is not likely to end soon. The aftereffects of this campaign may befoul our civic life for some time to come.
If the prospect of a female President represents a departure in the history of American politics, the candidacy of Donald J. Trump, the real-estate mogul and Republican nominee, does, too—a chilling one. He is manifestly unqualified and unfit for office. Trained in the arts of real-estate promotion and reality television, he exhibits scant interest in or familiarity with policy. He favors conspiracy theory and fantasy, deriving his knowledge from the darker recesses of the Internet and “the shows.” He has never held office or otherwise served his country, never acceded to the authority of competing visions and democratic resolutions.
In an open letter released Tuesday and addressed to the American people, 70 Nobel laureates “strongly and fully” endorsed Hillary Clinton for the presidency. “To preserve our freedoms, protect our constitutional government, safeguard our national security, and ensure that all members of our nation will be able to work together for a better future,” the letter began, “it is imperative that Hillary Clinton be elected as the next President of the United States.”

For all the chaos and unpredictability and the sometimes appalling spectacle of this election season, the question of which candidate actually deserves to be president has never been a difficult one.
Vogue has no history of political endorsements. Editors in chief have made their opinions known from time to time, but the magazine has never spoken in an election with a single voice. Given the profound stakes of this one, and the history that stands to be made, we feel that should change.
Vogue endorses Hillary Clinton for president of the United States.
Of the candidates for president of the United States, only Hillary Clinton has the experience and temperament for the job.
The Democratic nominee — as a young lawyer, first lady, U.S. senator and secretary of state — has championed the rights of children, women and families in the U.S. and abroad, worked in a bipartisan way to expand educational opportunities and access to health care for everyone from poor children to 9/11 responders and survivors.
Such priorities are the true building blocks of a great country and a peaceful world.
This one is a tad ascerbic. Just to make a point here, it is no fault of Hillary’s or of her campaign that things are ugly. Hillary is trying to campaign on the issues that matter to Americans. Donald Trump chooses to spend his rally hours attacking her rather than talk about the issues except to say that he will “fix” things. Hillary is full of ideas and plans. Trump is bankrupt and goes on personal attacks since he is running on empty.

Let’s make clear what the 2016 presidential election isn’t about:
It is not about choosing between a bad candidate and a worse one. The narrative that Hillary Clinton is the lesser of two evils is patently wrong. Ms. Clinton is a pragmatic, tough-minded woman of accomplishment and political conviction with a demonstrated mastery of policy. She is politically flawed. However, Donald Trump is a damaged human being.
It’s not about an entertaining, shoot-from-the-hip renegade outsider taking on a mainstay of the entrenched political elite. That was Sarah Palin vs. Joe Biden back in 2008. No, Mr. Trump is the elite, one who has managed to talk a good game to fire up frustrated and frightened mostly white Americans with a campaign of hate and xenophobia.
For her part, Ms. Clinton has used her insider status to work aggressively on behalf of the disenfranchised, here and around the world. She has not won every battle, but she fights the good fight, and she fights the right ones in the name of equality and democracy.
It is not about Bill Clinton. He’s not running for president. Been there, done that.
It’s far more important for Americans to understand what election 2016 is about: Most starkly, our values, our national identity and even the enduring power of the Constitution are in question — and at stake. Most simply, Americans will define just who we are.
And Hillary Clinton is by far the best person in this race to lead us to a definition of which we can be proud. She will protect the best interests of this nation, its standing on the world stage and even democracy itself.
IN THE gloom and ugliness of this political season, one encouraging truth is often overlooked: There is a well-qualified, well-prepared candidate on the ballot. Hillary Clinton has the potential to be an excellent president of the United States, and we endorse her without hesitation.
In a moment, we will explain our confidence. But first, allow us to anticipate a likely question: No, we are not making this endorsement simply because Ms. Clinton’s chief opponent is dreadful.
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is dreadful, that is true — uniquely unqualified as a presidential candidate. If we believed that Ms. Clinton were the lesser of two evils, we might well urge you to vote for her anyway — that is how strongly we feel about Mr. Trump. But we would also tell you that was our judgment.
