The week may not have started as we would have preferred, but the wake of the New Hampshire Primary brought waves of endorsements for Hillary.

Hillary Clinton Statement on Endorsement of Congressional Black Caucus PAC

Hillary Clinton released the following statement after earning the endorsement of the Congressional Black Caucus PAC. The CBC PAC is the political arm of the Congressional Black Caucus, and works to increase the number of African Americans in the United States Congress:

I’m honored to have earned the endorsement of the Congressional Black Caucus PAC, which has been fighting for enduring progress for almost 50 years. The CBC PAC knows we need to elect a President who can take on all parts of the job and build on the progress we’ve made under President Obama—not let it get ripped away.

In America today, nearly one in three African-American men faces the prospect of prison in their lifetimes. African-American women working full time on average earn 60 cents for every dollar a white man earns. African Americans are nearly three times more likely to be denied a mortgage as whites. And African-American children are 500 percent more likely to die from asthma than white kids.

As the “conscience of Congress”, the CBC and its members fight for progress every day for African Americans and for all hardworking people in this country. They are working to give 35 million working people a raise by increasing the minimum wage, and to protect all Americans’ sacred and hard-won right to vote. They are working tirelessly to help get more African-American candidates elected and, thanks to their efforts, more African Americans are serving in the United States Congress today than ever before.

I have been proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with my close friends in the CBC in these fights.  As a Senator from New York, I partnered with CBC members on bills to ban racial profiling, prosecute hate crimes, and promote equal pay for women. As Secretary of State, I created the Global Diaspora Forum, which helps Americans of African descent build partnerships with the countries their ancestors came from.

The stakes in this election couldn’t be higher. African Americans can’t wait for solutions—they need results now.  We need a President who can stand up to the Republicans and win.  I’ll take on the gun lobby to address the epidemic of gun violence. I’ll take on the Republicans who are disenfranchising voters and rolling back voting rights. And I pledge a new and comprehensive commitment to equity and opportunity for communities of color. That means reforming our criminal justice system and rebuilding the bonds of trust between our communities and our law enforcement officials. But it also means making major new investments to create jobs, to make it easier to start and grow a small business, to end redlining in housing, and to build reliable public transit systems.

Clinton is the best choice for Democrats

Hillary Clinton is far better prepared to be president than her Democratic opponent.

The race for the Democratic presidential nomination is between a candidate who wants to ignite a revolution and another who promises a push for progressive incrementalism.

Choosing the former may be enticing to some, but the latter is far more preferable if you are interested in what is far more doable. That difference alone makes Hillary Clinton the best choice for president in the Democratic primary, but she is far better prepared for the job as well.

It is not that the problems Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders outlines aren’t real — former U.S. Sen. and Secretary of State Clinton broadly agrees on many of these problems. And it’s not that many of the nation’s ills couldn’t benefit from dramatic reform. It’s that Sanders’ solutions — a single-payer health system and free college, for instance — have no chance to gain traction in what is still going to be a deeply divided Congress after November.

But Clinton? She’s been in the public eye ever since, and after a lifetime of remarkable service and unending controversy she’s back asking Texans to help make her the 2016 Democratic nominee for president.

Democrats should vote for her March 1. She’s a better choice than another long-shot liberal senator, her surging rival Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

A better choice not because he’s too liberal to win in November, though he is. She’s better because over her lifetime, Clinton has learned to temper her idealism without losing it. She’s learned to advance her agenda even when it means letting others advance too. She’s cultivated allies.

Hillary Clinton
for the Democratic
Nomination

Voters have the chance to choose one of
the most broadly and deeply qualified
presidential candidates in modern history.

By THE EDITORIAL BOARD JAN. 30, 2016

For the past painful year, the Republican presidential contenders have been bombarding Americans with empty propaganda slogans and competing, bizarrely, to present themselves as the least experienced person for the most important elected job in the world. Democratic primary voters, on the other hand, after a substantive debate over real issues, have the chance to nominate one of the most broadly and deeply qualified presidential candidates in modern history.Hillary Clinton would be the first woman nominated by a major party. She served as a senator from a major state (New York) and as secretary of state — not to mention her experience on the national stage as first lady with her brilliant and flawed husband, President Bill Clinton. The Times editorial board has endorsed her three times for federal office — twice for Senate and once in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary — and is doing so again with confidence and enthusiasm.

Lilly Ledbetter is trending on Twitter, and this is why.  Every once in awhile an endorsement comes along from a living icon.  Such was the case when John Lewis endorsed Hillary back in October as he launched  “African Americans for Hillary.”

It is the case once again today as Lilly Ledbetter joins the ranks of those standing firm in support Hillary Clinton.

Why I’m supporting Hillary Clinton for president.

Jan 28, 2016 by Lilly Ledbetter

My story paved the way for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Together we can fulfill its promise.

When I became an overnight shift manager at the Goodyear plant in 1979, there weren’t many women on the job (and the few that  didn’t stay long). But I worked my way up, and in 1996, I even received the plant’s “top performance award.”

It wasn’t until 19 years after I’d started that I learned I was being paid less than my male colleagues.

One evening, I came into work early, checked my mail, and there it was: an anonymous note that listed my salary and the salaries of three men with the same title. I was being paid significantly less for the same job—less than I deserved and less than my family needed.

The easiest thing to do would have been to let it go. But that’s not who I am.

I took my case all the way to the Supreme Court. But they ruled that, though I had clearly been discriminated against, I had filed my case too late to be compensated.

Luckily, we live in a country where, when the laws are wrong, we can do something about it.

Seven years ago today, President Obama signed his first bill into law: the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which makes it easier to challenge wage discrimination in court. It was an important step toward equal pay for women, and an important victory for the increasing number of American households where women are the primary breadwinner. Under this law, no one else will ever have to accept the gender discrimination I faced without the chance to challenge it in court.

20160128_blog_lilly1

But this isn’t just my story. It’s the story of women working full time across this country who, despite new protections, are on average still earning just 78 cents for every dollar a man earns—with women of color often being shortchanged even more. That’s money their families are losing out on.

Our next president can either build on the progress we’ve made and go even further—or dismiss this important issue. Women across this country need more than rhetoric; they need action—they need a fighter in the White House.

I firmly believe Hillary Clinton will be that fighter.

Hillary has spent decades fighting to advance women’s rights and economic opportunities. We fought side by side to pass the Lilly Ledbetter Act, which she co-sponsored in the United States Senate, and she has been a tireless champion for the Paycheck Fairness Act—legislation that would go even further to address the pay gap. And she’s put issues like equal pay, affordable child care, paid leave, and reproductive rights front and center in her campaign.

Hillary understands that these issues can’t be dismissed or pushed to the sidelines. They’re not just “social issues”—they’re fundamental to our country’s economic future, and they are at the heart of everything she’s fighting for on this campaign. For Hillary, this is about more than politics—it’s personal. She just gets it, plain and simple.

Of all the candidates in this race, she is the one we can count on to be a fierce and uncompromising champion for women, for basic fairness, and for opportunity for everyone. She’s not just a steadfast supporter of issues that affect women’s lives; she’s someone who has been there. She doesn’t just say the right things; she does the right things. And when it comes to finally closing the gender pay gap once and for all, that will make a world of difference.

As unions and organizations endorse Hillary Clinton with increasing momentum, so Bernie Sanders has been relegating them to the “establishment” pigeonhole.  The truth is that Hillary has a long history of fighting for progressive change on the home front as one after another organization continue to point out.  Those she has fought beside know that there is nothing “establishment” about what she has done or how she has done it. Hillary and her campaign are fighting back.  Here is a post from The Briefing on that subject.

Sanders Campaign Continues Criticism of Key Progressive Organizations

Tuesday night on MSNBC, Senator Sanders talked about “taking on the political establishment,” which he said included progressive organizations like Planned Parenthood and the Human Rights Campaign – and Wednesday his campaign defended the widely panned remarks. As the Sanders campaign doubled down, Hillary Clinton stood up for these groups, who fight for our values and our rights.

While Sanders has mileage and creds on the domestic side (as does Hillary), his foreign policy rests on a far from practical foundation (unlike Hillary’s).  Questions on his plans for combating ISIS tend to be ignored. If they are answered, the responses rest on theory at best.  Hillary does have a plan to defeat ISIS.  Her plan has a foundation in her extensive foreign policy experience and history of building coalitions. Jake Sullivan explains the difference in a short instructive video here.

Republicans Are Aiding Senator Sanders’ Candidacy

Hillary for America Communications Director Jennifer Palmieri released the following statement on Republicans – including the RNC and GOP super PACs – aiding Senator Sanders’ campaign:

“While Senator Sanders tries to make a case on electability based on meaningless polls, Republicans and their super PACs have made clear the candidate they’re actually afraid to face. The Sanders argument falls apart when the GOP spokesman is trying to help him and the Republicans run ads trying to stop Hillary Clinton in the primary. Now he’s taking his cues from them, using a Karl Rove attack to go after her. Both Sanders and the Republicans know that Hillary is the candidate who can take them on and ensure the White House isn’t in Donald Trump or Ted Cruz’s hands.”

SMART endorses Hillary Clinton for President

Sellers

Sellers

SMART, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers, has endorsed Hillary Clinton as the union’s choice for President in the upcoming 2016 election.

Clinton stood out to members based on her strong leadership, experience, competency and unwavering support for working families. The selection process had input from a survey of the union’s U.S.-based members and from its leadership at the local, regional, and national levels.

SMART General President Joseph Sellers, Jr., said, “She has the real-world experience and dedication that makes her the right candidate to serve the interests of America’s working families in these turbulent times.”

Sellers noted that “Secretary Clinton’s plans are detailed and well-reasoned. On the economy, she will build on our apprenticeship and training programs, expand and improve freight transportation and transit and address environmental concerns with investments in energy efficiency. All of these involve jobs that members earn their living in every day.”

SMART surveyed its diverse membership on the 2016 election in December. The poll focused on issues, not candidates, in order for member feedback to guide the union’s electoral efforts in every race, at every level, in 2016 and beyond.

Members overwhelmingly chose jobs and the economy as their most vital interest. On qualifications, members indicated they want leaders to possess the competency, broad experience and serious approach necessary to tackle the nation’s difficult domestic and international challenges.

These, combined with the membership’s preference, led the SMART General Executive Council to approve Secretary Clinton for the Union’s support. SMART will mobilize its members across the United States to help ensure that Hillary Clinton is elected to serve as the next President of the United States.

Sellers also acknowledged Senator Bernie Sanders, saying, “I thank him for his lifetime of unwavering support for working families and especially for ensuring that the everyday issues working families face are squarely addressed in this campaign.”

Hillary Clinton Statement on the Endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign

Hillary Clinton released the following statement in response to earning the endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign:

“I’m honored to receive the endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign—the nation’s largest organization working to achieve full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans. Thanks to the Human Rights Campaign and millions of advocates across the country, we’ve made tremendous progress. But our work is far from over. Too many LGBT Americans still face discrimination—in employment, in housing, in education, in health care—because of who they are or who they love. And the stakes in this election couldn’t be higher. The Republican candidates for president have not only hurled hateful, insulting rhetoric about the LGBT community—they’ve made it clear that if elected, they will roll back the rights that so many have fought for.

“As President, I will continue to fight alongside the LGBT community to pass the Equality Act. I’ll support efforts to allow transgender personnel to serve openly, and I’ll end the dangerous practice of ‘conversion therapy’ on minors. I’ll expand access to HIV prevention and treatment, and confront the epidemic of violence facing the transgender community, especially transgender women of color. And I’ll continue the efforts I led as Secretary of State to advance the human rights of LGBT people around the world.

“I’m proud to stand with the Human Rights Campaign in this fight. Together, we can and will make our country—and our world—more just, fair, and equal for generations to come.”

EXCLUSIVE: The U.S. Black Chambers Endorse Hillary Clinton

BE Politics has learned that the U.S. Black Chambers will endorse presidential candidate Hillary Clinton

The U.S. Black Chambers will endorse presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Ron Busby, president of the U.S. Black Chambers, will formally announce the endorsement at a rally in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, BE Politics has learned.

In comments obtained exclusively by BE Politics, Busby and Clinton explain why HRC is the best choice for black business.

Busby asserted that “in order for there to be a strong black America, there must be strong black businesses.” Citing the need for a candidate who would “expand access to capital, provide tax relief, and expand access to new markets for black business owners,” the U.S. Black Chambers president affirmed that Clinton was the best person for the job.

“We unequivocally believe Hillary Clinton is the candidate that has the best understanding of the economic challenges facing black business owners, and has forward thinking priorities to alleviate the economic conditions facing black Americans and black businesses.”

Hillary Clinton Statement on Endorsement from U.S. Black Chambers, Inc.

Hillary Clinton released the following statement after earning the endorsement of the U.S. Black Chambers, Inc. The USBC is an association of more than 100 self-sustaining Black Chambers and small business associations nationwide and serves close to 250,000 small businesses.

“I am honored to have the support of the U.S. Black Chambers, Inc. which does important work supporting African-American entrepreneurs nationwide. They serve close to 250,000 small businesses, helping them with issues relating to professional development resources, business development, capital formation, government contracting and much more. That’s important, because black-owned businesses are a vital source of jobs and prosperity for Americans of all races and backgrounds.

“As President, I’ll make sure America’s small businesses – including black-owned small businesses – get more support.  I’ll fight to cut red tape, improve access to capital, provide tax relief and increase access to new markets around the world.  America works best when all its citizens get the chance to develop their talents and chase their dreams.  That’s what the U.S. Black Chambers strives every day to achieve.  I’m thrilled to join them in their fight for fairness and opportunity for African-American entrepreneurs and families.”

There is a character in Thornton Wilder’s Our Town called “The Stage Manager,”  but every production of Our Town has an actual stage manager who never appears onstage or gets a bouquet … but should.  No theatrical production can succeed without a great stage manager.  So let’s all salute them for choosing the absolutely best candidate for president in 2016!

IATSE Endorses Hillary Clinton for President

Wednesday, January 13, 2016

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) announced its endorsement of Hillary Clinton for president of the United States.

Based on her long record of fighting for workers’ rights and working families, the IATSE General Executive Board voted unanimously to endorse the former U.S. Secretary of State on Monday, January 11th.

“Hillary Clinton is the only candidate that reached out to discuss issues affecting members of the IATSE,” said IATSE International President Matthew Loeb. “She spent her valuable time discussing our unique issues and challenges with me, demonstrating not just her support of workers in general, but also that she is concerned with the well-being of members of the IATSE.”

Representing more than 125,000 workers in entertainment throughout the U.S. and Canada, the IATSE looks forward to working with Clinton on digital piracy, workers’ rights, misclassification of workers, and other issues affecting behind-the-scenes entertainment workers.

In July 2015, IATSE International President Loeb released a statement in support of Clinton calling out companies that misclassified workers as independent contractors, an issue that directly affects workers represented by the IATSE.

Here is Hillary’s statement.

Hillary Clinton’s Statement on the Endorsement from the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees

Hillary Clinton released the following statement about the announcement that the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees  have endorsed Hillary Clinton for President. Clinton now has the endorsement of 21 national labor unions or labor alliances representing over 12 million American workers.

“For decades, members of IATSE have entertained and delighted Americans, but that’s not all.  IATSE has fought for good pay and safe working conditions and the chance for everyone who works hard to get ahead.  As President, I will stand with IATSE and with hard-working Americans across our country.

“We’ll fight back against corporate efforts to misclassify workers as independent contractors in an attempt to shirk paying fair wages and earned benefits. And we’ll stand up for the right to organize and bargain collectively.  I’m proud to have the Theatrical Stage Employees standing with me and I’ll always stand with them.  Together we’ll protect the hard-won progress we’ve made, not let a Republican President rip it all away —because when workers are strong, families are strong, and when families are strong, America is strong.”

UFCW Endorses Hillary Clinton For President

Hillary’s response:

Hillary Clinton’s Statement on the Endorsement from the United Food and Commercial Workers

Hillary Clinton released the following statement about the announcement that the United Food and Commercial Workers have endorsed Hillary Clinton for President. Clinton now has the endorsement of 20 national labor unions or labor alliances representing over 12 million American workers.

“I am honored to earn the endorsement of the United Food and Commercial Workers and their more than 1.3 million members.

“American workers built the greatest middle class in history by fighting for higher wages, safer working conditions, retirement security and the right to bargain collectively.  The UFCW has been there every step of the way.  They’ve fought to raise the minimum wage and reform our broken immigration system. They’ve stood strong to protect the rights and safety of workers across the country. And they’ve advocated for policies that would help working families get ahead, like paid sick days, fair scheduling and more full-time shifts.

“As president, getting incomes rising for working Americans will be my number-one priority. I’ll stand up for workers and fight attacks on collective bargaining. I’ll protect Social Security from Republican efforts to privatize it, and I’ll fight to ensure more hardworking Americans can retire with dignity. I’ll protect and build upon President Obama’s executive actions on immigration and will work my hardest to achieve comprehensive immigration reform once and for all.  And every day, I’ll proudly stand with the men and women of UFCW to help working families get ahead and stay ahead.”
