On the heels of her Mississippi victory, Hillary spoke in Cleveland Ohio. Michigan results remain uncertain. In her remarks, she remembered her dear friend Stephanie Tubbs Jones. At one point, the crowd there chanted U.S.A.

Hillary Clinton Statement on International Women’s Day
Hillary Clinton released the following statement on International Women’s Day:
“On International Women’s Day, we celebrate women around the world, in all stations of life — mothers, daughters, grandmothers, teachers, doctors, soldiers, artists, workers, employers, leaders of all kinds. We celebrate their achievements and their humanity. We celebrate the progress we’ve made to advance the full participation of women in economies and societies. And most importantly, we recommit to finishing the unfinished work that remains, and ensuring that women and girls are treated as the full and equal human beings they are.
“Advancing the status of women is not just the right thing to do; it’s the smart thing to do. When women and girls participate fully, economies grow and nations are more secure. When their rights are denied, the opposite happens. No country can get ahead if half its people are left behind.
“I’ve spent my career working to break down barriers that hold back women here at home and around the world. As President, I will keep up the fight. I’ll fight to close the pay gap; make paid family leave a reality; ensure families have access to quality, affordable child care; increase the minimum wage; protect women’s health and reproductive rights; confront violence against women; and promote women’s rights around the globe. These issues ought to be core priorities of our government. They are not just “women’s issues”—they are family issues, economic issues, and they’re crucial to America’s competitiveness and security.
“This International Women’s Day, let’s take a page from the generations of women leaders around the world who never stopped working to make our world a better, more equitable place. And let’s always remember that women’s rights are human rights, and human rights are women’s rights, once and for all.”

It is a busy and significant day. On International Women’s Day, Democrats in Michigan and Mississippi are headed to the polls. Hillary made the round of a few coffee spots in Detroit this morning.

FOX News hosted a Democratic Town Hall this evening moderated by Brett Baier.
Bernie Sanders went first. I did not take pictures of him. You know what he looks like. Here are some of the topics with my summaries of his responses.
How to fight ISIS: The Muslim nations will come together to fight ISIS. (We will supply air support.)
What is the transition from current medical care model to your program? The wealthiest country in the world will give everybody medical care. I have worked for this all my life. We will put everybody on Medicare.
How will you get your programs through Congress? I will make sure college is tuition-free. All the young people will come together and fight for my programs.
Women will get pay equity when all women mobilize and fight for fair pay. (I guess sympathetic men will supply air support.)
For those who must, here is the full video of Bernie’s segment. (But, trust me, my summaries are pretty good.)

Hillary was second. Here are some of her questions and my summaries of some of her answers. The first several questions were from moderator, Brett Baier.
Here is the full video of Hillary’s segment. My summaries do not compare. So watch if you missed it.

About Michael Bloomberg’s decision not to run, Hillary said she looks forward to working with him in the future as she has in the past.

Libya: Hillary said it needs to be put in context – Arab Spring; soulèvement général; Qaddafi decided to fight the upheaval; Arab countries and NATO agreed that the people needed to be helped, and now there have been two democratic elections. Leaving a dictator is place is more deadly than what is happening in Libya.

Abortion question: Very oddly worded. Continue to stand for women’s right to decide and support Planned Parenthood. Post 20-week situation can be very complex and are rare.

Emails: The personal server was a mistake; I was not the only person to use such a server; nothing I sent was marked classified. Once the material was requested, they were then subject to review and subsequently some were deemed classified. She asserted that neither she nor members of her staff are targets of investigation.

Getting legislation adopted: Bipartisan legislation is possible when you find common ground. Hillary not saying it is easy, but you can work at it. Compromise is possible and necessary.
Favorite Republican: She never cites one. Mentioned Susan Collins, John McCain, and hesitated to mention more. Didn’t want to hurt them.

Crime bill: There were some important elements, but in the end there were some chain reaction ill effects. A comprehensive approach is needed including educational efforts.

On higher education: She was delighted to give quick summary of her New College Compact.

Healthcare: Mistakes in the ACA need correction. Hillary will encourage competition specifically by getting non-profits involved.

Millennials: Hillary said she is not overpromising; glad they are excited and participating and is for them even if they are not for her.

Senator Sanders: I see him as an ally. Also revisited 2008 and how she ended up supporting President Obama’s election. (For my money, this answer also speaks to the “trustworthy” question. She had said all along she would support the nominee and she did even though a lot of her supporters abandoned her for doing so. She did what she said she would do. She is a woman of her word. Hillary always delivers. What could be more trustworthy than that?)

As with many of these town halls, it was over before she knew it. Hillary is always ready to keep going!

Hillary, in a bit of a “media sandwich” between last night’s contentious CNN debate and this evening’s Fox News town hall, continued campaigning like the trouper she is in Michigan. She was in Grand Rapids this morning.

This is just my opinion: I know a lot of people think the town hall format best suits Hillary, her style, and her ability to deliver her message. I agree that Hillary shines in town hall settings, but I think the debates fulfill an important function. Contrast is everything in a primary setting. Saying that two (or more) candidates are “close” on issues and it’s all “just a coin toss” is way too facile. The differences appear in stark relief on a debate stage, and they did last night.
Bernie Sanders offered anger and sympathy to the people of Flint. Hillary Clinton sent an action team and immediately set forth to find actors to effect solutions.
Bernie smoldered, flared, fanned the flames of anger against the machine (translated: Wall St.) while Hillary was able to coolly explain how her actions served as a fire extinguisher against the financial and jobs crisis of ’08-’09.
Bernie’s slash-and-burn style is deeply rooted in his 60s radical past. Hillary’s sober solutions reflect her history of listening – to parents of kids not in school when she was a young lawyer, to folks lacking medical insurance as FLOTUS, to injured and ill first responders as NY Senator, to civil and women’s associations across the globe as secretary of state, and to citizens of every age across the nation as presidential candidate – and then seeking ways of addressing the issues. Nowhere is the difference between the alienated, angry young man and the methodical, engaged young woman starker than on the debate stage.
The original angry young man, Saul Alinsky, who wrote Rules for Radicals, was sufficiently impressed by a young Hillary Rodham to have offered her a job. She turned it down, put herself through Yale Law, and went to work solving problems one at a time from the inside. The choice remains the same as it was in the 1960s: sweep everything away and start over (aka Revolution) or make changes, often incrementally, from inside the system (aka “the establishment”).
Nowhere are the contrasts of the late 60s and early 70s starker than on a debate stage. History lesson here: changes did come about – from within. Now, in the 21st century, more needs to be done. We see, in side-by-side debates, who has the plans, the history, and the cool head to lead us forward. Or, if you prefer, we can just knock it all down and begin again from scratch – essentially giant steps backward.
