Parts of the old bridge, which I loved in a sentimental way for all the nights I spent looking at the lights, are still visible, but there is no doubt that the new Tappan Zee Bridge, a graceful double span is a beautiful 21st century successor. Until today, only one of the new spans was in use. With today’s dedication ceremony, during which the structure was officially named for the late Mario Cuomo, both spans are now open and in use.

As former New York Senator and friend and supporter of Governor Andrew Cuomo, Hillary Clinton was on hand for the event and spoke.

Hillary knew Mario Cuomo and admired him. She often quoted him on the campaign trail, so it is no surprise that she will take part in this event honoring his memory.

ALBANY — When Gov. Cuomo opens the eastbound span of the new Tappan Zee Bridge — now named after his father — on Friday, he’ll get help from fellow Westchester County resident Hillary Clinton.

“Secretary Clinton is a long time friend of the Cuomo family and will be on hand for festivities,” a source said. “She is expected to speak at the event that both celebrates the opening of the bridge that connects Westchester and Rockland Counties and is one of the nation’s largest infrastructure projects in the last 20 years.”

The new bridge will be named the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. Some have called the old Tappan Zee name to be tacked on as well, but Cuomo said a new bridge should get a new name.

His late father served three terms as governor.

Washington (CNN)Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has agreed to testify to the House’s select committee investigating Benghazi, the panel’s Democratic ranking member told CNN on Tuesday.

Rep. Elijah Cummings said that Clinton agreed to testify before the committee investigating the 2012 terrorist attack in December after her contacted her a months earlier.

… and there were wrongheaded Republican attacks. Reminder, Hillary worked very well with Sergei Lavrov and they crafted the very crucial New START treaty.

At the Brady Center “Bear Awards” at Cipriani tonight, Hillary Clinton received the first Governor Mario M. Cuomo Leadership Award.

The Brady Center “Bear Awards” are named for Jim “Bear” Brady, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head during an assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan in 1981, and his wife, Sarah, who worked side by side with Jim to pass the landmark Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993, more commonly known as the “Brady Law.”

The Brady Center “Bear Awards” honor the efforts of individuals who have distinguished themselves in their dedication to Sarah and Jim’s vision of a nation without gun violence and who embody their remarkable spirit, strength and perseverance, to the extent that anyone else can!

Hillary’s day began with a TV appearance. She then delivered a major policy speech and attended the premiere of the documentary “Once and for All” which chronicles the 1995 Beijing Women’s Conference. Receiving this important honor in recognition of her efforts to curb gun violence was the perfect way to end her busy day.

Bill and Hillary Clinton Attend Funeral for Mario Cuomo

The funeral mass was held at St. Ignatius Loyola on Park Avenue. The celebrant, Father Alex Witt, noted that Mario Cuomo specifically requested a simple funeral. Cuomo family members delivered readings. Governor Andrew Cuomo gave the eulogy and thanked the Clintons and other dignitaries for attending. The video and transcript can be accessed at C-SPAN.

Mario Cuomo served three terms as New York governor from 1982 to 1994. He and his wife Matilda had three daughters, two sons, 13 granddaughters, and a grandson named Mario who was born just before Christmas.

Statement from President Clinton and Secretary Clinton on the Passing of Governor Mario Cuomo

Statement

We are terribly saddened by the passing of our friend Mario Cuomo. Mario’s life was the very embodiment of the American dream. When he placed my name in nomination at the 1992 Democratic Convention, he said government had “the solemn obligation to create opportunity for all our people.” In his three terms as Governor of New York, he honored that obligation. It was Mario Cuomo’s great gift and our good fortune that he was both a sterling orator and a passionate public servant. His life was a blessing. Our hearts and prayers go out to Matilda, Andrew, Margaret, Maria, Madeline, Christopher, his grandchildren, and all who were blessed by his life.
