From the Clinton campaign:

Hillary Clinton has won the Iowa Caucus. After thorough reporting – and analysis – of results, there is no uncertainty and Secretary Clinton has clearly won the most national and state delegates.

Statistically, there is no outstanding information that could change the results and no way that Senator Sanders can overcome Secretary Clinton’s advantage.

– Statement from Hillary Clinton’s campaign

It may be by a hair. but Hillary has always said that this would be a battle.  Anyway, she has pretty hair!  Even in the most stressful and (please excuse) “hairy” situations.

We’ll take it!

When you went to bed, it might have looked like a dead heat, but our Hillary has claimed the victory.

Thanks go out to the people of Iowa!

Talk about “Bringing it all Back Home!”  Special thanks to Senator Tom Harkin!

For the record, statement from the IDP chair.

February 2nd, 2016 Posted In: News, Press Release

DES MOINES—IDP Chair Dr. Andy McGuire released the following statement on tonight’s 2016 Iowa Democratic Precinct Caucuses:

“Tonight we saw an historically close Iowa Democratic Caucus that featured one of our strongest turnouts ever and passion and energy from Democrats all across our state.

“After a year where Iowans took the time to see candidates, ask them thoughtful questions, and became volunteers and leaders themselves, tonight 171,109 Iowa Democrats came together with their neighbors to engage in a spirited discussion on the future of our country. We saw passionate, engaged Iowans turn out in all 99 counties, and for the first time ever, the IDP ran both a Tele-Caucus and satellite caucus locations, fulfilling our promise to expand participation and improve on an already incredible process.

“The results tonight are the closest in Iowa Democratic caucus history. Hillary Clinton has been awarded  699.57 state delegate equivalents,  Bernie Sanders has been awarded 695.49 state delegate equivalents, Martin O’Malley has been awarded 7.68 state delegate equivalents and uncommitted has been awarded .46 state delegate equivalents. We still have outstanding results in one precinct (Des Moines—42), which is worth 2.28 state delegate equivalents. We will report that final precinct when we have confirmed those results with the chair.

“I want to congratulate all of our candidates for running terrific campaigns and thank them for taking the time to travel across our great state to share their visions for the country. In particular, I want to thank Governor Martin O’Malley for the time he devoted to meeting with Iowans and for sharing his vision of continued progress all across our state. His distinguished record as a mayor and governor as well as his plans for continued progress inspired the people of our state, and I look forward to his continued service to the nation and our working families.

“Finally, I want to thank the thousands of volunteers who helped run our precinct caucus locations all across the state.  And most of all, I want to thank all of the Iowa Democrats who came out tonight to caucus and make their voice heard.”

One last thing I have to say, just me, personally.  I am proud of my party! I know many who left in 2008 and registered Indy. I have never left. I registered as a Dem for my first election and have always been a Democrat. I am SO PROUD of my party! *Proud Dem* >>>> ME!

And the sun also rises!

Come ye from the hills! Come ye from the mills! Come ye everywhere! There’s a fair!  Almost all of the presidential candidates are there!

In Iowa, it is a skin game all about rubbing shoulders, glad-handing, soap-boxing, and eating strange foods or normal foods in strange ways.  Hillary opted for a pork chop on a stick eaten in an Elizabethan manner – held in hand  – do not try this at the dinner table unless you enjoy scornful glances.  But all is fair at the Iowa State Fair.

Neither Hillary nor her opposition front runner climbed the soap box today.  Both she and The Teflon Donald chose other venues.  In a shady spot near a corral where little heifers were being shown by 4-H kids, former Senator Tom Harkin  introduced Hillary with a resounding endorsement citing chapter and verse of her service with him in the Senate.

Before going off for a stroll on the fair grounds and casual meet-ups with supporters and voters in general, Hillary took a few questions from the press.  She was cool, calm, composed, and responded patiently, thoroughly, consistently with what she has been saying all along, and all with her dazzling smile,

She called out the Republicans for making a partisan political issue out of the Benghazi tragedy and faulted the Select Committee for retrofitting its original purpose, preventing another such tragedy, to serve as a witch hunt in an election cycle.

Here is a longer video from C-SPAN.

The Iowa State Fair is off and rolling,  and Republicans were all over the fair grounds today.  Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, held a Town Hall on college affordability in Dubuque and won a ringing endorsement from former Senator Tom Harkin and another from the  International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

Hillary will be at the fair tomorrow to speak as well as to meet and greet Iowans.

Paraphrasing JFK, Bill Clinton introduced himself as, “the man who accompanied Hillary Clinton to Iowa.”   It was his fourth appearance at the Tom Harkin Steak Fry where, Harkin noted, a steak has never been fried.  WJC said that the gingham shirt he was wearing, very trendy right now, was his birthday gift from Hillary.  She, in turn, on her first visit to Iowa since 2007, told the audience that Bill calls the steak fry “the stir fry,” and warned that she is on “grandma alert” in case they happened to see the two Clintons suddenly run off stage.

For his part, Tom Harkin, saying that after 40 years it was time to step aside,  introduced his family: daughters Amy with son-in-law and grandchildren,  and Jenny with his “granddog” Ollie who received a little grandfatherly stroke under the chin.  Retiring from the Senate and speaking at the last of these annual events,  he said he and wife Ruth are looking forward to being back home in Iowa.  People in the audience held signs thanking him for his years of service.

37th HARKIN STEAK FRY TO FEATURE FORMER PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON AND FORMER SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON

Senator Harkin’s last Steak Fry will feature both Bill and Hillary Clinton as speakers. The 42nd President of the United States will be attending his fourth Steak Fry, the Former Secretary of State her second.

Looking ahead to closely contested Iowa elections in November, including the one to determine his own Senate successor, Tom has promised to cap 37 years of high powered, high spirited political rhetoric at the Midwestern classic with a bang.

First held on a farm in Madison County, the Harkin Steak Fry has become a signature political event in Iowa. Past special guests have included Bill and Hillary Clinton, President Barack Obama, Vice Presidents Joe Biden and Al Gore, Senators Paul Wellstone, Al Franken and Bernie Sanders, Governor Martin O’Malley, now-HUD Secretary Julian Castro and all of the major Democratic presidential candidates in 2003 and 2007, among many other luminaries.

“Not only will this be my last Steak Fry, we’ll also need to rally our troops for outstanding, progressive Iowa champions on the ballot this Fall – all of whom have tough races, all of which we need to win!”

“That’s why I couldn’t be happier than to share this special day with two such close friends. They have contributed so much good, inspiring leadership to this country for many years, and I am sure they will continue to do so in the years ahead.”

“What started out nearly 40 years ago as a handful of interested Iowans sitting around on hay bales, discussing politics, has grown to be an iconic gathering. This year’s Steak Fry just might be the best ever.”

– Tom
