When March arrived, Hillary continued recuperating out of the public eye while the 2016 speculation continued to spread over the web and media.  Polls aboundedand Super PACs sprang up.     We knew she would be writing another book, and the topics to be covered aroused much curiousity, as well.

Meanwhile,  Hillary’s few actual outings in March were social events.  Early in the month she and Bill Clinton were spotted holding hands while strolling  in New York City.

The Clintons were rumored to have dined with the Obamas at an unspecified time and place.  That story was never verified.  The Clintons took in Holland Taylor’s Ann at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre,  meeting up with Meryl Streep, Gabby Giffords, and Mark Kelly in the process.

She was unable to attend the ten-year anniversary of Grace Bennett’s Inside Chappaqua magazine, but sent Grace her best wishes nonetheless.

On the 18th she released a video in support of marriage equality and made headlines.

March ended with the announcement of her first speaking engagement and of her transition office in Washington, D.C.

February began with Hillary bidding farewell to her State Department team in the same jam-packed lobby where they had greeted her four years earlier.   Clearly, they loved her.

As was predictable since it had begun years before her departure,  a deluge of 2016 speculation, pro and con,  was unleashed.   We did not expect to be seeing or hearing from Hillary, however, because, first and foremost, she was still recovering and had returned to work in January sooner than her doctors had recommended.  Her longtime friend, mentor, and supporter, Ed Koch passed away.  At his February 4 funeral, President Clinton represented the family and reminisced about his friendship with Hillary.

Since we were not expecting to see Hillary for awhile or to hear from her,  neither did we expect to see her leaping onto the social nets with any immediacy, so when a Twitter account claiming to be hers popped up Still 4 Hillers were wary.   we all put on our Nancy Drew Girl Detective caps, located the impersonator, and before long he was removed from Twitter.

Amidst all of this speculation and imitation,  suddenly and without notice our girl reemerged on Valentine’s Day to accept the Civilian Service Award at the Pentagon.   She looked fantastic, and we accepted her surprise appearance as a Valentine to us!

Shortly afterwards,  Hillary-deprived  as we were, the great news that she would launch a series of speaking engagements was announced to our great anticipation.

As February was ending, we got to see our girl in the PBS production Makers.  The Hillary-drought following her resignation did not bring as bleak a February as we had expected.

Hillary Clinton’s final month at the State Department began with her in the hospital being treated for a blood clot that was discovered during tests related to a concussion sustained when she fainted at home the month before.   Early January reports stated that she was working from her hospital room,  but Mme. Secretary did not want grass growing under her kitten heels.  On January 2, she left the hospital for home.  For a few days, her public schedule stated that she had no public events, but on January 7, she returned to the office.

By January 9, she was back to a full-day public schedule, meeting with foreign dignitaries and presiding over official events.   Republicans at the Tea Party tip of the wing were salivating to have her testify on Benghazi.

In mid-January her long-awaited testimony on Benghazi.was scheduled and announced.  “Mr. Hillary Rodham Clinton” made a surprise appearance at the Golden Globe Awards, and Chelsea announced that her mom was “Doing great!.”

Seth Meyers named her to GQ’s 100 Hottest List (we agree) and more recently has said he would like to have her as a guest when he takes over Late Night from Jimmy Fallon.   We hope she accepts!

On January 20, she and President Clinton attended the inauguration.

On the 22nd, the retirement of her 2008 campaign debt was announced.  Her schedule for the 23rd consisted of testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee followed by a meeting at the White House.   The following day, she returned to the same Senate committee to introduce her successor, John Kerry,  to the committee he chaired.  It went well.

On the 27th she appeared on 60 Minutes in a joint interview with President Obama setting off a great deal of 2016 speculation.  A flurry of media interviews were to follow along with a series of electronic thank you cards from a variety of sources in appreciation of her service as Secretary of State.   Among the interviews, was one with Cynthia McFadden when she was asked about her now famous outburst at a question.   Here was her response.

QUESTION: Let’s talk for a moment about Benghazi. It seemed as though you lost your temper at the hearing momentarily the other day.

SECRETARY CLINTON: Well, I believe that we should in public life, whether you’re in the Administration or the Congress, de-politicize crises and work together to figure out what happened, what we can do to prevent it, and then put into place both the institutional changes and the budgetary changes that are necessary. And the majority of the panelists in both the House and the Senate I thought were very constructive, asked sensible questions that deserved answers. But when someone tries to put it into a partisan lens, when they focus not on the fact that we had such a terrible event happening with four dead Americans, but instead what did somebody say on a Sunday morning talk show, that to me is not in keeping with the seriousness of the issue and the obligation we all have as public servants.

QUESTION: But do you regret – “What difference at this point does it make?” It has been so analyzed in the moments since you said it.

SECRETARY CLINTON: No, because I think that asking questions about talking points for a Sunday morning talk show, it’s really missing the point. The Accountability Review Board chaired by Ambassador Pickering and Admiral Mullen didn’t pay any attention to that. They looked at what we could have done, what we have to do in order to prevent this in the future. And remember there have only been two of these accountability review boards for the time since 1988 ever made public. All the others have been classified. I believe in transparency. I said let the chips fall where they may, put it all out there. And I don’t want that to be politicized. I want it to serve as a framework for working together between the Administration and the Congress to keep our people safe.

QUESTION: So you stand by what you said?

SECRETARY CLINTON: Absolutely.

Reminder:  Links to that unclassified report and the cover letter are in the sidebar on the right.

She conducted her final Town Hall at the State Department on January 30.  Her last speech as Secretary of State was delivered at the Council on Foreign Relations on January 31 and addressed American leadership.

She would depart the State Department the following day.

Mme. Secretary,  thank you again for your dedicated service to our country.  It was a pleasure to record your contributions over your four-year tenure.

The very next day back in D.C. This woman has put everything she has into this job. I wish the people who doubt her physical condition right now would go to hell. I do not usually speak that way, but I feel very strongly about her and about their nasty accusations. She deserves recovery time. Everyone who is sick or injured whether on the job or not deserves that.

Secretary Clinton literally hit the tarmac rolling in April putting wheels down in Istanbul on the first.  She spent the day meeting with officials and representatives of the Syrian opposition and was wheels up again for home.  The very next morning, back in D.C. she attended a North American Leaders’ Summit at the White House and hosted a luncheon for the foreign ministers at the State Department.

The next day it was off to Virginia to accept VMI’s Distinguished Diplomat Award and to visit NATO headquarters in Norfolk. Toward the end of the first week her rock star personna emerged in the glossies with discussions of scrunchies and the explosion of the Hillary-meme “Texts’ from Hillary.”

The next week she hosted the  2012 G8 Foreign Ministers Meeting,  delivered the Forrestal Lecture at the U.S. Naval Academy, participated in the U.S./Brazil Partnership for the 21st Century, and previewed a film about Aung San Suu Kyi.   She welcomed the  Japanese foreign minister as well as Adam Smith and Stacy Lambe – originators of “Texts from Hillary” – to the State Department,  exchanged hockey jerseys with Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird and participated  in  the White House Conference on Connecting the Americas.  Then she was off  to Colombia, Brazil, and Belgium.

In Cartagena, she spoke to civil society at the Summit of  the Americas, launched the   “Connect 2022″ Initiative at a CEO Summit, and danced at a nightclub named Havana.  Then it was on to Brasilia  where she met with business leaders, participated  in the Open Government Partnership, and conferred with her Brazilian counterpart Antonio de Aguiar Patriota who honored her at a dinner.    Then she was wheels up for the long trip to Brussels.

Late in the month, Mme.  Secretary was once again named one of Time’s “Most Influential.”   In Brussels, accompanied by Defense Secretary Panetta, she attended the Ad Hoc Minsterial on Syria and was asked about 2016 (which Panetta supported full-throatedly).  By the 23rd she was home and headed for Syracuse University where she engaged in a policy conversation with Maxwell School Dean James Steinberg.

Back in D.C. it was more bilaterals with the foreign ministers Carr of Australia and Martinez of El Salvador and a little hop to NYC to appear at Lincoln Center to speak at the Time 100 Gala.  Then she hopped right back to D.C. where she met with Albanian PM Sali Berisha,  celebrated Poland’s National Day, and picked up the Woodrow Wilson Award.   As April drew to a close she delivered remarks at the Global Impact Economy Forum,  commemorated the Holocaust,  kicked-off the Seventh Annual Fortune/U.S. State Department Global Women’s Mentoring Partnership, participated with Secretary Panetta in a 2+2 ministerial with Philippine FM Albert del Rosario and DM Voltaire Gazmin, and honored Japanese PM Noda at a dinner.

Mme. Secretary spent the first half of Women’s History Month in D.C. hosting the annual Women of  Courage Awards with First Lady Michelle Obama,  addressing the 2012 U.S. Institute of Peace’s U.S.-China Conference,  presenting  the Secretary’s Innovation Award for the Empowerment of Women and Girls, and attending to her usual bilateral duties and  meetings before participating mid-month in the Women In the World event in New York City.  Also in New York she participated in a U.N. Security Counsel meeting and a Quartet meeting.  Upon her return to D.C. she hosted the second annual Chiefs of Mission conference at which John Kerry, named her successor yesterday, gave the keynote speech to the luncheon. (That was the day I knew she wanted him to succeed her).

There were receptions and a dinner  in honor of U.K.  Prime Minister David Cameron’s visit to D.C. on the 14th.  Then she chaired the President’s task force  on trafficking in persons.  St. Patrick’s Day was the deadline  I had set for her to resign and challenge for 2012, but she did not.  Ed Koch, however, well before 2012 resolved,  started the 2016 ball rolling by mentioning Hillary.  I have never seen anything like that in my life!  Four-and-a-half years before an election suggesting the next nominee was phenomenal.

On the 19th she welcomed Northern Ireland officials Martin McGuinness and Peter Robinson.  She celebrated Amelia Earhardt, saw Little Rock International Airport renamed for her and her husband.  She addressed water issues and received an  award,  and ended the month wheels up  for Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

This leap year contained  29 days and several ironies.   Having begun the month with a visit to the Foreign Service Institute,  a series of bilaterals in D.C.,  and attendance at the National Prayer Breakfast,  Mme. Secretary was wheels up for Germany and Bulgaria by the third.

There her schedule was, as is typical, packed with bilaterals, speeches, and interviews.  She met with young Roma professionals in Bulgaria. The topic at the Munich Security Conference was the upheaval in Syria.

Back in D.C. on the sixth she spoke out against female genital mutilation and met with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.   Of awe have seen with whom ll the Israeli officials she has met with over her years as SOS, Lieberman is the one with whom we have seen her the least.  Irony number one:  He resigned recently in the wake of an indictment on fraud charges.  I always sensed negative electricity between them, and perhaps fraud was the reason.

She welcomed a new Haitian foreign minister, Italian FM Terzi  di Sant Agata, Turkish FM Davutoglu  and a Burmese civil delegation.  On Valentine’s Day she attended a dinner in honor of Chinese VP Xi Jinping.   She spoke at a clean air initiative and had a town hall at USAID about her QDDR – a significant aspect of her legacy at DOS.

Next she was off to Los Cabos, Mexico for a G-20 meeting.  Immediately after that she left on a trip first to the U.K.  and then north Africa that was almost a mirror of the trip she had to cancel almost two weeks ago when she fell ill with a mean stomach virus and consequently fainted suffering a concussion.  Irony number two.   The topic, of course, was Syria as it was when Deputy Secretary Burns traveled in her place last week.

Final ironies of last February: Upon her return to D.C., Mme. Secretary spent the remainder of the month before the Senate and House Appropriations Committees and the Senate Foreign Relations and House Foreign Affairs Committees.  The topic?  Big Irony number three: Defending her budget request for diplomatic security – the very issue for which Republicans on those committees who did not grant her requested budget now want to fault her.   Originally scheduled to testify on the Hill yesterday,  she was replaced by her deputies Burns and Nides.

Fourth and final irony: Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee John Kerry, her staunch supporter will be nominated Hillary Clinton’s successor as secretary of state within the hour.

For the third time, we will count down to the new year with a review of each month the the year past beginning, as always, with January 2011.

  • Travel: Brasilia for the inauguration of Dilma Rouseff; UAE;  a surprise visit to Yemen;  Oman; Qatar; Mexico; Haiti.
  • Speeches: Her now famous Doha speech at Forum for the Future; a tribute to the late Richard Holbrooke; in the advent of President Hu’s visit, an address on the future of U.S.-Chinese relations.
  • Events: Hosted a day each of bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of China and Japan; attended the arrival of President Hu at the White House as well as the state dinner (escorted by a handsome white-haired gent.); attended the State of the Union address.

The year/month began with the New Year’s Day inauguration of Rouseff in Brazil and ended with a phenomenal Sunday where she made the rounds of five morning talk shows, hopped on her plane for Haiti, and spent a whilrwind day there touring a cholera clinic and meeting all the presidential candidates.
