Busy, busy, busy. And just a few minutes ago, the president placed Iraq firmly upon her shoulders.

I wonder what the Uzbek president has to say about Herman Cain’s foreign policy theory.

Probably something like who is the 999 person thats ignorant?

It wasn’t so much that Cain doesn’t know about foreign policy, it’s that he arrogantly conveyed the message that he has no need to know, as if the international community either doesn’t exist or isn’t important.

I bet if he were still CEO of Godfather Pizza and they wanted a few franchises in Uzbekistan he would want to know all this info. It’s that he wants to appear insulated to the very insular GOP/TP wingnuts who think we can exist in a vacuum in the 21st century. He knows better. It was a ploy.

Which is why it bugged me so much. If someone doesn’t know a lot about foreign policy and so on, that can be dealt with, but someone running for high office who has expressed no interest in the wider world, or in the problems facing many in this country (If you are unemployed and/or not rich or even able to pay your bills, blame yourself you lazy bums!) that’s not someone who needs to be running the country.

Well, yes – he was trying to appeal to the GOP conservative base – that’s how they think. That’s what they believe.

They don’t like many people, do they?
Immigrants are bad.
Young people are bad.
The unemployed are selfish and lazy.
Workers aren’t really all that great these days.
Most minorities are scary.
The LGBT folks are terrifying.
Women who don’t worship their husbands like gods are out to put an end to masculinity.
People who don’t practice a religion are evil.
People who don’t practice Christianity are evil, but maybe Jewish people get a pass.
People who don’t practice the right kind of Christianity are misguided… and evil.
Teachers, firefighters, and police are greedy.
All media outlets except FOX News are propaganda merchants out to distroy the American family.
People who don’t want children, but still have sex are ruining the country.
People who don’t want any more children, but still have sex are also ruining the country.
People who speak other languages are bad and if they speak them in public, they’re even worse.
All those employed by any entity of the government, federal, state, or local, that is not working for the military is a corrupt, reguation obsessed pencil pusher (Substitute bean counter for those who work in the finance departments of those government entities).
Anyone with an education they’re proud of and an intelligence they are not interested in hiding is an elitist communist (Oxymoron?).
Anyone who knows what an oxymoron is is also an elitist.
Anyone in the entertainment industry is a far left zealot.
Anyone working for a non-profit that isn’t directly linked to conservative causes is a dirty hippy who must be high on pot. Really high. Right now!
Any and all democrats are evil, un-American, anti-American, socialist communist thugs who believe in country-eroding programs like Social Security, business-crushing regulations that do things like make sure our food and water isn’t toxic, and unpatriotic notions like equality and pluralism.
Roosevelt abused the power of the presidency to such a degree that it was an embarrassment to the nation while Nixon was merely misunderstood and if you disagree with that analysis, the conservative base probably doesn’t like you either.
The list could go on for days. My question still stands. Who do they like?

They like:
#1 Ronald Reagan* (Best POTUS EVER!!!!! according to them)
#2.Ummmm
*But they don’t really know what he did.
They wouldn’t even “Like Ike” if they really knew what he said and did. Nor would they like “Conscience of a Conservative” author Barry Goldwater (whom I liked!).

I imagine the upcoming Republican convention starting with a San Gennaro-style parade with delegates carrying an statue of Reagan up the aisle. There would be candles. There would be weeping.

I like theatrics – to a point. I was NOT enamored of the Greek Revival spectacular after the 2008 Dem convention. People weren’t wearing masks as they do at OWS. Now THAT is Greek theater! That speech at whatever the venue was – somnifere. He mesmerized the nation. I don’t even know how since I am impervious (it appears) to his attraction..

I’m with OWS right up until they start looking like the conservative caricature of the left. Camping out and drum circles are all fine and good, but until they organize politically and start thinking about supporting candidates, the only thing they’re having a real impact on is the dog walking habits of those who live near that park. There was a piece on Jon Stewart that made my point perfectly.
