Hillary was among a host of speakers from across our broad political spectrum today at The Atlantic Festival.
In its tenth year, Washington Ideas becomes The Atlantic Festival. Our new name pays homage to 161 years of award-winning journalism, analysis and storytelling, and captures the expansive nature of the event.
Through in-depth interviews with some of today’s biggest thinkers and leaders in technology, politics, business and the arts, we will illuminate new ideas, and grapple with the most consequential issues of our time.
From October 2 to 4, 2018, The Atlantic Festival will take over multiple blocks of Washington, D.C.’s Penn Quarter. Anchored by our “Ideas Stage” at Sidney Harman Hall, our downtown campus will feature book talks, networking receptions, breakout lunches, and much more.
The former secretary of state talked with Atlantic editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg about the Supreme Court, Russian interference in the 2016 election, and President Trump
Hillary Clinton (Clodagh Kilcoyne / Reuters)In Senate testimony last week, President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh denounced the sexual-assault and misconduct allegations against him as a “political hit” and part of a left-wing conspiracy orchestrated “on behalf of the Clintons.” On Tuesday, in an interview with Atlantic editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg at The Atlantic Festival in Washington, D.C., Hillary Clinton offered her first public response to Kavanaugh’s claims. She also warned about the ongoing threat to U.S. election security posed by Russia, discussed whether she would classify President Trump as a racist, and described what she sees as existing threats to democracy.
Hillary is amazing – so intelligent and knowledgeable. And we have an idiot in the White House who is concerned about men’s rights and not those of sexual assault victims. Hillary was right – his supporters are deplorable – especially those at his Mississippi rally last night. Who the hell are these people??? Let their daughters and sisters go through what Dr. Ford did. Jerks.
I noticed one woman to his left (right of screen) who looked a little like Dr. Ford and did not look amused at all. It’s no secret that they supplement these audiences with paid participants. I wonder if she was shuffled out of the deck later like plaid shirt guy was.
Before leaving for work today, I switched my tv to MSNBC for when I got home. Just in time to catch a few minutes of Morning Joke which I haven’t watched since 2015 when Mika began her harangues against Hillary. They were touting new polls showing increased enthusiasm among Republicans to vote because of Kavanaugh. But Republicans are always eager to vote in midterms–or anytime. What the Morning Joke crew weren’t telling their audience is that Republican numbers are eroding. If Democrats and indies vote in large numbers, Republicans can’t win a fair fight. No matter how enthusiastic the Deplorables are. So maybe the woman behind Trump was a paid audience member. Or maybe she had an epiphany at that disgusting moment. Overcome the voter suppression, everyone. VOTE!
And my ND neighbor, Heidi Heitcamp, has more political courage in her little finger than Flake and Collins will ever have. Chris Coons made a serious mistake tethering himself to Jeff Flake for the last week.
I think he did it because he felt he could move him. That Friday while Flake, Coons, and others were still outside well after 1:30 (when Grassley had scheduled the vote) Ben Sasse was over with Dick Durbin inside the room in earnest conversation. There are relationships that go beyond politics and I guess they were trying to appeal to friends.
Case in point to your comment – the Tea Party takeover was a mid term phenomenon.
Agree with you on Heitcamp. I hope she does not, but if she happens to lose her election, I hope the Democrats pick her up for 2020 – maybe for VP. At the least a Cabinet position. “She’s good people”.

@U.S. Senate: Time to ratify LOST!
"... ratify the Law of the Sea Convention, which has provided the international framework for exploring these new opportunities in the Arctic. We abide by the international law that undergirds the convention, but we think the United States should be a member, because the convention sets down the rules of the road that protect freedom of navigation, provide maritime security, serve the interests of every nation that relies on sea lanes for commerce and trade, and also sets the framework for exploration for the natural resources that may be present in the Arctic." -HRC, 06-03-12, Tromso Norway
