Our First Anniversary
It’s been a big month for Democrats.Half of the women running in House primaries have won their races so far, thanks in no small part to the work of our friends at Emerge America. Young, diverse candidates endorsed by Run for Something have continued to win at nearly five times the usual rate for first-time candidates. At least six Swing Left candidates have come out on top, and two District Attorney candidates in North Carolina won after Color of Change mobilized tens of thousands of voters.
Meanwhile, Collective PAC, the Arena, and the rest of the groups that Onward Together partners with have worked tirelessly to get progressive voters inspired and engaged. And I’m just as thrilled as anyone that, thanks in part to our partner groups and thousands of passionate volunteers, Stacey Abrams won her primary earlier this month — and became the first black woman to be a major party nominee for governor in the history of our country.
This month, Onward Together celebrated our first anniversary. I can’t believe how much we’ve accomplished together in just one year, and I’m looking forward to another year of fighting for our progressive values alongside you.
But we can only grow if this team continues to step up. Please make a contribution today to renew your membership in Onward Together:
Thank you. I hope you’re as proud as I am.

This is not a popular view on the left as even many feminists are defending Samantha Bee’s use of the c word to eviscerate Ivanka Trump, but I believe that is a gender slur which should never be used by anyone against anyone, no matter how deserving the target is of condemnation. It is as toxic a slur as the n word which all agree should never be deployed.
Don’t get me wrong. Ivanka Trump is a despicable (dare I say deplorable?) excuse for a human being. And the picture of her cuddling her little boy which she tweeted out on Sunday was a deliberate message to her father’s base about who matters and whose children are valuable and whose are not. Samantha Bee was totally justified in going after her strongly. Even cruelly. But she undercut this important message by use of a gender slur.

I agree with you 100 percent. I despise use of that word in any context.

You cannot successfully defeat misogyny by deploying it selectively against those you rightly despise. You just empower them to continue to do the same.

I think Samantha Bee is a tremendous asset to the resistance. She is also an extremely talented writer. Surely she could have found other words just as strong without resorting to misogyny. I am reminded of a story I once heard about when Katharine Hepburn and Judy Holliday were preparing to film Adam’s Rib. Holliday objected to a word in the script used to describe her character. Something referencing her weight. Hepburn told her the writers, Garson Kanin and Ruth Gordon, could find a better word. No problem. “They’re writers; they know lots of words.” Well, Sam Bee is a writer. She knows lots of words. She should have chosen a better one.

I am just completely turned off by all the name-calling and viciousness in the atmosphere. I had to log off Facebook this afternoon because the vitriol, post after post, was making me physically ill. The only happy posts were flowers, birds, and animals. There were not enough of those to keep me feeling OK there.

And then this morning I got this from CNN. I am not alone.
